Great Handheld Gaming System

The 3DS XL is a pretty great handheld. There are plenty of games for it and it has a bunch of social features which allow you to gain in-game currency to use.
The colors are nice and it has 3D effects which do not require glasses to enjoy. It has a strong first-party line-up: Fire Emblem, Mario, The Legend of Zelda, etc. Unlike the 3DS, the battery life is much better which means it is a better portable companion.
Unfortunately, long-term usage starts wearing on the chassis. This means the hinge and stylus holder starts to loosen; this is a common con that I've noticed since even the Nintendo DS Lite.
It has a 3D feature, but I personally do not use that option often--I opt to turn it off. Prolong usage of it--or turning the 3D up really high--can cause headaches.
The social features are nice, but they are only really effective in densely populated areas provided most people play games. This is an amazing feature in Japan and anime/comic/gaming conventions, but I feel that the feature cannot be fully utilized outside of those areas.

The Nintendo 3DS XL is a great good. My son have the small Nintendo 3DS and he enjoy the new one better. He like that its bigger and can enjoy playing the games with more display.

My daughter absolutely raves about the larger screen size allowing her more gaming time without eye strain or too much scrolling. I strongly recommend the 3DS XL to anyone as an upgrade or even a first device for your young gamer.

Worthwhile upgrade from original DS

Previously had an older Nintendo DS Lite and decided to upgrade. Mainly interested in Nintendo first-party games and wanted to be ready in advance of some cool upcoming titles.
Build quality of the 3DS XL is great. All the buttons are laid out logically, though it would have been great to add a second joystick on the right. There was plenty of room to do so and certain games require it. They would rather sell you a bulky, ugly accessory called the Circle Pad Pro, which they are inexplicably also releasing for the XL after initially being available for the original 3DS.
Using 3D without glasses is a new experience. It takes some fine-tuning to adjust it to the right level for the game, your eyes, and your position. It can strain your eyes with lengthy use but luckily can be turned off with the slider on the device.
The software is pretty nice also, though I wish the screens had a higher resolution/quality. If you're excited to try the "3D camera" then think again. It's a novelty and really does not work. Just look like blurry messes, but what can you expect from a (I think) 0.3 megapixel camera!
Essentially, if you are hooked on Nintendo titles, you'll need a 3DS to play them going forward and the XL is definitely the way to go.

My children absolutely love their systems. The battery life is great which in essence help me maintain an affordable electricity bill. Keeps them occupied for hours. (If allowed) I haven't heard any complaints as of yet.

This product does exactly what I wanted it to do. Play games. I don't see a need for any other uses of this device. It's okay for internet browsing, and camera isn't terrible. But neither would be in my opinion a primary function of this device.
If you don't have a cellphone, then go on vacation and would like to remember it and take pictures, leave the 3DSXL, and buy a disposable camera. Same for internet, Facebooking or whatever else can be used, but a laptop or cellphone would be preferred in my opinion over the 3DSXL.
The frame/body of the 3DSXL is slick, but not hard to keep a hold of. I'd recommend a case, and a wrist strap. The sound quality is good, but with headphones it's at its best.
The color choices of a Pikachu Edition, Red, and Blue are poor at best. The 3DS came in many colors, Black, White, Turquoise, Purple, Red, etc. It's ridiculous to me they couldn't scale up those same colors an inch and a half for the XL model.
The stylus isn't terrible to use, but I'd recommend buying extras and getting one of those packs with the fatter pen variant styluses.
I've used the 3D and it is impressive, but I don't see a need for it either. All it does is wear down the battery faster.
Connecting to WiFi can be an issue if you don't have a connection featuring WEP, but its not impossible to do. However the WiFi thing is more annoying to me than anything else. It was a pain to get it connected correctly so my friend and I could play together. However, the Nintendo website is very helpful, and after setting it up the correct way, it works great now.

I have been a gamer for close to 40 years and enjoy playing many different types of games. While Nintendo is not at the top of my most enjoyable list of gaming products, the 3DS XL is a blast to play. The library available is pretty robust and though there are some titles that are just not my cup of tea, I really love playing any of the Mario game titles as well as Donkey Kong titles. I also love that there is a good selection of some of the classic Nintendo games available in the eShop for very reasonable prices. If the option to play Nintendo games on a handheld device sounds like something that would be fun to you, you really must pick up a 3DS XL! For less than $150 I can't think of any other way to have this much fun with video games.

It is a bit heavy and bulky but that is exactly what I wanted when I got the Extra Large version. The screen quality isn't as sharp, but it is much easier to see everything, so it is a worthwhile trade off.

I had about 200 extra bucks lying around and decided to get a new DS as mine is quite dated. It was about 8:30 and I had to make a snap decision between the newest DS, this one, or an xbox one. I'm so glad I chose this DS as it is well worth the money. With the newer DS, the ONLY thing that is different is the C stick and the size. The processors have only minimal performance difference, so little so that the average gamer can't tell the difference, even with playing Super Smash Bros on Hundred-Man Smash.
Pros: Everything about it
Cons: Not too good for a carryaround in a pocket

Awesome! Originally had the smaller first generation of the 3ds. It was ok. I traded it in for the bigger version and I have to sa if you are debating between the two GO BIG OR GO HOME! The matte finish is great less smearing and does not scratch easily. The bigger screen allows you to truly appreciate the 3D graphics and not strain like the smaller version. The buttons have a better feel, the smaller version just felt cheap to me with the buttons. Battery life is good. Great product and pretty light for its size.

I have no previous experience with the original 3DS, so after a bit of research I came to the conclusion that the 3DS XL would be the best choice. My list of pro's and con's (preferences) were as follows:
PROS:
+ Larger screen size (preference)
+ Better battery life
+ Physical buttons on the SELECT, HOME, and START buttons instead of touch buttons (preference)
+ You receive a 4gb SD card instead of a 2gb card
+ The stylus location on the side instead of on the top (preference)
CONS:
- More expensive
- Slightly less portable due to size
- Larger screen size without increasing the resolution usually results in a lower quality display (although the difference isn't all that noticeable in this case)
Had I bought a 3DS first, I probably wouldn't find enough reason to upgrade to an XL. However, I recommend all of those who are considering buying a 3DS for the first time to go with its bigger brother; the 3DS XL.

Bought the first 3ds when it got launched in US. It was an absolute NO for a gaming handheld console. This is just right for the size and weight, except you cannot enjoy it if you like the hear the sound effects.
The 3d effect is even more stronger (when you put it to max) than before, as the one on regular 3ds had just enough depth perception without giving your eyes a strain.
Cons are always gonna be battery life, but also to add to it is the sound volume is just poor and cannot be amplified even at max unless you are isolated from everyone.
Bottom line, enjoyable more than the regular 3ds because the screen is just right for regular and 3ds games. I enjoyed Zelda as 3ds and all the DS games like Mario kart, super mario, etc.

Portable Video Gaming

I've been a long time video gamer. I've bought most of the portable video game devices early on all the way back from the original gameboy. Portable video gaming has come a long way. The most obvious feature of the Nintendo 3DS XL is the larger screen. Makes it less hard on the eyes. The downside is that is a bit larger, making it bulky and less easy to put in your pocket. The 3D aspect is interesting and can be a bit hard on the eyes at first. Once you get used to it, it isn't so bad. Definitely adds to the video game experience. There aren't too many games out for this system yet, but hopefully that will change in the coming years. Overall, I'd give a good rating. It's not perfect, but it's good enough for traveling.

I think the 3DS XL is a great system. Much bigger screen than the original 3DS so games are much easier to play and see. This is especially good for detailed games like Resident Evil Revelations or even Mario games, like Paper Mario: Sticker Star or games that you play for extended periods of time...you don't get a headache as fast! :-)

This thing is huge! Very easy to play with and I don't have to give myself a headache trying to read things or spot small objects. I kind of wish there were more games, but I'm excited about the new Pokémon coming out for it in October. Sadly when I have the 3D on your eyes can go a bit wonky when you move the screen which you do a lot for some games- which is difficult sometimes but so cool! The best feature however? You can toggle the amount of 3D you get so it doesn't even need to be an issue.
