OURA must be Finnish for “Trash”
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I wanted this ring for sleep tracking and for sports tracking like hockey and hiking and etc. I researched ice hockey in particular directly from the Oura site. It says it was fine for Hockey. They were WRONG. First skate with it and it fell apart! Felt looseness in my glove and when I took it off, I now had four parts…. 20 minutes in. Smh Apparently, others are having this happen as well. I should have researched more. I’ll be returning this $400 piece of garbage.

I wanted to like it but I don't
||Posted . Owned for 4 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I wanted to like this but I just don't it isn't accurate and the fit isn't good it will fit one day and then the next it is to small I don't know if it is cutting circulation and my finger swells or what is happening but I don't like it. I have figured I'm the type of person who likes to see the progress and what is happening without pulling out my phone so this is a no for me.

A comfortable, active tracker for app-only people!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Quick Overview ================================= I was very curious to see how a smart ring would fit into a "smart fitness device" ecosystem. They've been out for years - led by Oura - and this is their 4th version. The Oura Smart Ring 4. With no display and no vibration for feedback or notifications, could this be useful and/or replace a smartwatch or fitness band? Overall build ================================= After completing the sizing using Oura's sizing kit, you'll order your Oura Smart Ring 4 which comes with a charging stand that the ring sits perfectly into. I chose the "brushed silver" version and it looks and feels great! The etching they did on the surface somehow really catches the light while looking matte. It's hard to describe, but it really is interesting to look at! I read that it's made entirely of titanium so it should be quite sturdy. Externally, you'll see a small divot or dimple. That helps you wear the ring properly. That dimple should face in on your palm side. If you look inside the ring, you may catch some of the lights and sensors that line the inside portion. There are more sensors than the previous generations and should account/allow for some of the ring spinning that will happen during a normal day. Whenever I could, I tried to make sure the dimple was facing into the palm side of my hand. Once you set the ring onto the charging stand and plug in a USB-C cable, the light will glow and you can then open the Oura app (Android, for me) to set up the ring. It should see the ring right away and you'll complete the setup by answering a few questions and allow the application to access the things it needs to track your location and activity. Once that was done, it was time to do testing - which just means wear it for 5 days or more, and see how it goes. The ring is waterproof, so taking a shower or bath is no problem. Performance ================================= In testing, I wore the ring for 3 days before the battery indicator (in the app) showed less than 30%. At that time, I charged it and put it back on when it was full. Supposedly I could have pushed this for 2-3 more days, but I didn't want it to end up dead if I was out and about. As you can imagine, since the ring has no display, no indicator lights, nor any vibration for notification, you must check the app for everything. Luckily, it's a pretty nice app! At the top, you'll see things like "Readiness" (did you have a good, restful sleep?), "Sleep", "Activity", and "Heart Rate" so you can get some "at a glance" info, and below that you can dig into things like your actual activity, heart rate, and sleep. As you click into each one, you can get more details about your sleep quality, REM sleep, deep sleep, etc. During the setup, you may have selected some of your favorite activities. For me, I chose tennis, table tennis, and walking. As it tracks activities throughout the day, it will make a best guess regarding what you might have done. Later, you can check the app and confirm or edit what it guessed. I really liked that compared to my Fitbit Charge 5 which doesn't do much regarding activities it doesn't recognize. The 3 sections at the bottom include Today, Vitals and My Health. Today gives you your daily snapshot of activities as expected. Vitals lets you dig into the stats a bit more, while My Health is supposed to give you more updated data after gathering data for up to 2 weeks. As of now, since I've been testing for a week, it says that each category is still "calibrating". After gathering this data, I'd assume it could get a more accurate baseline of my activity and stress levels to better alert me when I may be feeling stressed, etc. Stats-wise, if I compare this to my Fitbit Charge 5, the steps are usually within 1-2% so I'd say it's pretty accurate. My sleep tracking seems more accurate with the Oura 4 because my Fitbit will mistakenly think that reading in bed is sleeping time! With the Oura Smart Ring 4, I haven't had to edit or correct the sleep times. Apparently some independent studies have shown the Oura is very accurate (5% more than Apple Watch and 10% more than Fitbit). All of this accuracy and comfort does come at a price. The price of the ring which is up there with a high-end smartwatch, and the subscription which is $70 annually. I do love the data and the application as a whole, but it's up to you if you think that price is worth it for data and a device with no display or native notification capabilities. Conclusion ================================= Could this be your only fitness tracking device if you're somewhat of a minimalist and like your classic analog watches? Yes, I think it gives you a wealth of accurate data that you'd have to check in the app, of course. Could this be your secondary fitness tracker if you already have a smartwatch? Maybe, but the value proposition gets quite a bit smaller. It's within 1-10% of a smartwatch's accuracy, but it has no display nor vibration for notifications. It does have a great app that has a lot of information, and it's comfortable to wear for long periods of time. I'd recommend this highly for those that don't want to invest in a smartwatch or fitness tracker since it's very unobtrusive and gets you nicely presented, accurate data. As a "backup" or secondary device to a smartwatch, I'd say get it if you don't like your current sleep tracking stats (I'm looking at you, Fitbit!).

Comfortable, All Day Fitness Wearable
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I didn't know what to expect initially as this is my first smart ring. The Oura ring 4 is on the larger side compared to regular rings and other competitors. I compare it to a class ring although it's lighter and feels a bit like plastic. Although it is made of Titanium, it is very lightweight and doesn’t feel like it is metal. The ring does take some time to get used to (took close to two days for me personally) as the band is wider. Setting up the ring after unboxing it was very easy; I installed the Oura app on my phone and walked through each of the steps on the app. It was as simple as sliding the ring onto its dock (small square with the outline of the ring), creating an Oura account, answering a few questions about your health including goals and about your sleep, and accepting a few permissions from the app to track your health data. Once this is complete, you are able to start wearing the ring and it will start tracking your movement, heartbeat, and more. One thing I'd like to point out is to begin tracking your exercises and activities automatically, you will need to accept all of the Oura app's permissions. Initially I believed I did but I went into my activity history for the day and noticed there were additional permissions for the app that I missed. After enabling them, it began to track my physical activity pretty well (more details below). The ring tracks 5 main categories of your health: readiness, sleep, activity, heart rate, and stress. Readiness details your energy for the day based on sleep data and heart rate variability and gives recommendations on how to go about your day. Sleep, if the ring is worn while you sleep, keeps track and shows your sleeping patterns and heartbeat while you sleep. Activity presents your activities throughout the day as well as estimated calories burnt and number of steps taken throughout the day. Heart rate displays your heart rate throughout the day in 30 minute increments and is further segmented based on multiple categories such as your average heart rate and it's range while asleep and during activities. Stress is calculated and not available until after wearing your ring for a week but gives recommendations based on a calculated amount of time it measured you were stressed. It is calculated based on your heart rate variability, heart rate, motion, and body temperature. All categories are shown with a score and are updated throughout the day based on activities. Each of these categories is tracked through the multiple sensors the ring has including red, green, and infrared LEDs as well as a digital temperature sensor and accelerometer. The different sensors measure blood and oxygen levels, heart rate and heart rate variability, respiration rate, temperature, movement, and activity. While listing some of the sensors, I would also like to point out that the Oura 4 can be used in water up to 100 meters and in saunas. It is not recommended to use when diving though. Since I was mainly interested in using this ring for fitness reasons, there were a couple of things I wanted to point out about it. One, I definitely prefer using it over my smartwatch when exercising and weight lifting. It was more comfortable for me personally and was easier to wear throughout the day and when sleeping (to track my sleeping schedule). Two, I liked how you are able to track exercises. You can specify the specific exercises you completed throughout the day and have a record of the time it took you to complete the exercise (start and stop times). Oura has over 80 different activities listed that you can choose from and help calculate how many calories are burned based on the time and intensity of the exercise. For a much shorter list of exercises, including walking, running, and cycling, you are able to record a much more precise exercise and can set a timer. Wearing the ring made me realize how often I was up and moving throughout the day and helped encourage better health lifestyle choices like walking and exercising regularly. This was mainly my personal choice but through the app and it tracking various health data, it helped put into perspective some of my fitness goals and changes I needed to make to reach them. I also wanted to point out that having the ring as a wearable does not replace having a smartwatch (since its main use is to check the time. I personally found it much more comfortable to wear for extended periods of time as compared to a smartwatch although it does not fill in some of the features especially quickly checking notifications and checking the time and date quickly. There are more features that I personally don't need vand haven't used including insights specifically for women like period cycles and probable fertility windows but find helpful for my other half if she were to begin using it. Lastly, as for it's battery life, I wore it for close to 7 days consecutively, only taking it off each day to shower, and it survived with about 2% of battery left. It included me wearing it during exercises and while asleep. Some of the things I would love to see in Oura’s next generation ring would be a small vibration sensor embedded within the ring to notify you of notifications (specifically calls and messages). Another thing I would personally enjoy is the possibility of switching out the “outer shell” of the ring to add customization options such as changing the color from gold to silver or matte black and such. (Another note I would like to make was that I have the ring in the gold color option and, based on others’ comments, received my ring in good condition and is a true golden color, not bronze or orangy). As for the app side of recommendations, I would recommend adding exercises, activities, or goals as recommendations that can be completed throughout the day based on fitness or health goals one has. Additionally, it would be nice to see more types of exercises within the list of activities that can be logged as completed and for calorie burn accuracy. Now for the cons. The biggest con or complaint is the associated membership costs with using the Oura app ($6 monthly). Without the membership, the data presented through the Oura app is very limited and, based on their website, only gives access to the ring battery data, three daily Oura scores, basic profile information, app settings, and the Explore content section within the app. Additionally, the Oura API cannot be used, closing the door for accessing your health data with other apps, but you can still download all of your personal data through Oura on the Web in a csv or json format. Second, I noticed there were times where an activity was not tracked automatically. There were instances where I was doing weight training exercises and found that it was not marked on the app. Other times were I walked, ran, and started other exercises it was able to track well but not necessarily the times my heartrate spiked due to weight training. I would have to manually enter the activity in the app and the duration of it to log my exercise correctly. Last but not least, Oura does give some information about what it does with your health data it collects and does happen to specify in several cases the data it specifically uses for which purpose. On their website, it mentions that the health data can be used for their services, research and development to improve their products, marketing, for customer service communications, and for third party integrations (although how those services happen to use the data depends on their own privacy policies). Oura's site also adds that some data is “privacy-enhanced” including being anonymized to the point where it is no longer considered tied to someone specifically and that it complies with US state and federal data protection laws. If this still makes you a little weary, users are also given the option to submit a data subject request to “access, delete, or rectify their personal information.” Overall, I find the Oura 4 to be a very comfortable smart wearable, especially if you're looking into improving your fitness and health. While it's not a replacement for a smart watch, there are some added benefits and can even double as a wedding band.
