I have had the Sony X800M2 for about a year, was happy with it, very good picture and sound, the only minus, that I had to manually switch it to Dolby Vision, deep down I always wanted the Panasonic, but could not afford it, luckily it went on sale plus I had some gift cards and rewards, so I decided to get it. WOW, while the Sony is a very good player, the Panasonic is definitely a step up, the picture is definitely better, I noticed more richer colors and highlights with movies that I have, The Mediatek chip is awesome, even the sound I feel is a little better, I am SO very happy with my purchase.

What can I say? Bare bones but high quality UHD quality. You shouldn’t buy this for any streaming apps because there are much better solutions for that but if picture and sound quality from 4k discs is what you are looking for then this is the product for you! I was previously using an Xbox One S to spin my discs and this just blows it out of the water. It is really straight forwards to use too, insert disc and press play and that is it, no messing switching between HDR or Dolby Vision or anything like that. Great purchase to go with my Sony A9G! Oh, that reminds me, the Sony TV remote also provides all of the disc control features I need on a regular basis.

Great, compact 4K HDR Blu-ray/DVD player with full online streaming capability as well. It also includes full support for DolbyVision video standard. Amazing picture and sound quality. It also does a great job upsampling older DVD disc media as well.

Great All Around Buy for Dolby Vision

I can only believe the $1k Panasonic player is better, but this is an amazing machine. It reads Dolby Vision without problem to my Sony OLED, even through an older HDMI 2.0 AVR. With good cables I get very good picture and sound quality through the dual HDMI outputs. HDR tone-mapping feature is a bust because it added unnatural "mirror" effects where a glistening light should be. Leave it in Basic HDR mode and it works great. This unit is definitely superior in picture and sound quality to the Sony 800, but just a little.

Thank you for your detailed review! It's fantastic to hear that it seamlessly handles Dolby Vision on your TV. Your feedback about the HDR tone-mapping feature is noted. It's great that you found the Basic HDR mode to work effectively without introducing unnatural effects. Overall, we're pleased that the DP-UB154P-K has exceeded your expectations in picture and sound quality. Enjoy! -M Panasonic

I'd been using a first generation Samsung 4k disc player since 2017, but needed to replace it. I chose the Panasonic DP-UB820-K based on the outstanding reviews from customers and publications alike. I'm always reserved with my expectations for new gear, but I have to say that this 4k disc player performs beyond my expectations! It is a huge step up in video quality over the Samsung on both 4k titles and blu-ray up-conversion. The audio quality is also a good step up, providing greater dynamics. Everything I've watched through the Panasonic DP-UB820-K has been hugely impressive, and that is no exaggeration. It's worth every penny as far as I'm concerned. Highly recommended!

I previously owned a Sony X700 and while it was serviceable, I grew a bit annoyed with having to recon which discs supported Dolby Vision and having to toggle Dolby Vision on and off all the time. Enter the UB820. I immediately noticed a substantial increase in overall Dolby Vision brightness and highlights. I took the time to A/B compare both players hooked up to my Sony OLED and the difference was very obvious. I can't speak to the built in streaming features as I use the Apps on my OLED but it seems a bit clunky. Your mileage may very there. As far as a disc player goes, this is a reference quality device and the upgraded performance is worth the price.

Great 4k picture with an easy to use remote and interface. Great upscaling. I don't use the embedded apps, as they are available on my TV, so I cannot comment on them. It's pricey, esp. if you consider the price of a gaming console, but I am satisfied.

Alright, I do think this is priced more expensively than it should be...but there are apparently not many producers of 4K players. It does work amazingly with my 65" OLED and surround sound set-up. Archaic menu that takes a bit to get used to using. It's almost like it came straight from the 1st gen of DVD players, but it does work really well at displaying 4K.

This Panasonic Streaming 4K UHD blu ray player so far, is awesome ! Very versatile & easy to setup. Great Upscaling of older content & great sound reproduction. Internet interface & software selections are weak but, not important, with today's flat screens proprietary Internet access, for this reason only, I gave it 4, instead of 5 stars. Picture quality is beautiful !

Someone having one of these Panasonic Blu-Ray Players recommended it to me because of its quality. I had complained of the audio quality of a previously bought unit. The Panasonic plays CD's as well as DVD's and Blue-Ray discs. Excellent audio quality. I have not played a blue-ray disc on it yet because I don't have one yet. Functions well. It has various types of hook-ups which I bought the unit for in order to connect audio to my old "RCA jack input" to my old stereo receiver. Very satisfied. Does have 2 HDMI outputs which I used the one to connect to my Samsung 4K smart TV. The TV audio on mine is set to go to the stereo so when watching discs, audio comes out the stereo only, be that good or bad in your opinion. Would work well with home theater systems connections.

Excellent 4K BluRay disc player. Upscales discs automatically. Supports HDR video. Wi-fi enabled so you can stream from 4 included apps including YouTube and Netflix. Has an optical outlet so you can connect the sound to an external stereo in addition to the TV which I do when watching music videos and concerts online. Connects to the TV with a HDMI cable (not included). An easy to use remote is included. Highly recommended.

The first one had the dreaded power supply issue. The unit would just turn off during a movie. Make sure you test your unit immediately with multiple discs all the way through to make sure you don’t have this issue. Return it if you do. There’s no solution. Otherwise. Great image quality. Lots of image enhancement tools, including HDR controls. I have a Sony 4K non HDR projector, so HDR needs to be turned off. Removing that metadata from the picture really takes away a lot. Although they’ve come a long way, many projectors just aren’t really bright enough to truly take advantage of HDR. Slightly older projectors like mine, don’t have HDR at all. As such, the picture needs to have sort of simulation, otherwise the picture looks flat. This projector does a good job of this. The biggest issue is that even with HDR off, and enhancements on blast, the image is still darker than the Sony players. The problem with the Sonys is that they skip a lot. So a perfect player doesn’t really exist yet, at least for projectors. This is as good as you can get for now.

As far as 4K players go this is one of the best, especially in this price range. Regular blurays do look fantastic with this player, so if you have a collection already you wouldn't be disappointed with the upscaling. I would recommend it for anyone looking to create a home theater. Now for the critique. A minor issue with Dolby Vision when watching John Wick 4 on 4K disc. Top menu selection text becomes dark against background and isn't visible. Only happens when in Dolby Vision, other HDR formats don't have that issue. However, once the movie is playing, pop-up menu looks fine even in Dolby Vision. Not sure why that specific movie's 4K disc. The interface software could be a lot better. Don't get me wrong, it does it's job, but I have had an occasional reoccurring bug where an overlay diagram of remote controls would appear on screen and the only way to get rid of it is to power cycle the unit by unplugging it. I'm assuming that the bug is caused by the TV sending some command to the unit, but I can't recreate it. I'm sure the software things can be remedied with firmware updates, but Panasonic is very slow to rolling out fixes.
