Wow, I really love this electric razor from Norelco! I am in a bit of a unique position having a full beard but I do shave my head. So I thought maybe others like me would be interested to know how this razor works on the head and not just the face. Most of what I say should be true for both use on the head and the face though.
In the past with other electric razor options, I could never get a close shave without spending 2 or 3 times as long as a classic razor blade and was constantly going over the same spot until it would finally get a decent shave. So I was excited to try this razor but also skeptical, assuming it would be another dud, only to find out it’s what I’ve been searching for all this time!
As soon as I got the razor I put it on the charger and flipped through the included manual for some quick tips and uses to make sure I didn’t break anything etc. About an hour later I was able to test it out.
FIRST SHAVE - DRY:
For my first shave I decided to use it dry, assuming that would probably be the toughest way to get a close and comfortable shave, which wasn’t exactly wrong. I still thought the first shave was a lot better than I expected, but it did start to feel irritating after a while and the warmth from the blades/motor was starting to be noticeable, not painful, but I could feel it. Even still, I got a really nice close(ish) shave. I say close-ish because it wasn’t that buttery smooth shave I got with a classic razor shaving against the grain, but it still visually looked just about the same as a standard razor does. So, short of touching you, no one would notice the difference.
CLEANING:
Once I finished shaving I had to do the dreaded cleaning. I really don’t like cleaning electric razors but I also know if you don’t, they will not last as long and not work as well, so I psyched myself up for a fight but quickly realized how easy it is with this razor. There’s a little release around the blades that is spring loaded and the blades pop up, and since this is a wet/dry razor, you simply rinse the blades under the tap and you’re good. I also liked that all the little hairs were trapped inside this area and had not spewed all over my sink while I was shaving like some electric razors I’ve used in the past tend to do. There is a more in depth cleaning process explained in the manual that has to be done every few shaves which I have not done yet but requires removing blades and parts to get a deep clean. I assume this is more time consuming and complicated but I will still do it to make sure the razor lasts as long as possible.
SECOND SHAVE - WET:
So after a successful dry shave, the next day I took the razor into the shower to try a wet shave, with and without shaving gel. This took a little getting used to because even though it says waterproof and it is safe to use in the shower, I felt weird running it under the shower water to rinse and warm up the blades. But after letting it dry completely I did not notice any issues from taking it in the shower and am confident it’s safe.
My wet shave was just as good, if not better than the dry shave. First I used just hot water and had pretty good results and then tried adding some shaving gel and definitely felt it was easier to glide the razor over my head but didn’t notice a huge difference in closeness, so I will most likely skip the shaving gel in the future. But I should note, the gel did rinse off pretty easy and as long as you stay on top of cleaning, you shouldn’t have any issues with gel “gumming” it up.
RESULTS:
After finishing the wet shave with the philips razor I decided to go back over half of my head with my classic razor and compare the two. I did not notice much difference at all with just a slightly closer shave with the traditional razor. So I decided to ask my wife which half she thought was better and she had to take some time and really compare before saying they were pretty close but maybe the [traditional razor] side was a little better. That’s darn good in my opinion. Any time you can have an electric razor shave that close, you’re in a good spot.
OVERALL:
So after about a week of using this razor I came to a few conclusions. First, it is as fast or faster then the shaving technique I was using. Faster in a sense that I can quickly shave without having to shower or attempt to wet down my head and shave without getting water everywhere and making a mess at the sink. And I can still take this razor in the shower and get a really good, close shave if/when I have the time.
Second, I don’t believe an electric razor should ever claim to be better than or the same as a standard razor blade shave and if you’re trying to get that exact same feeling from an electric razor, personally, I think you’ll be disappointed a lot. But if you can understand that this is an alternative to buying tons of blades, getting cut, needing water and shaving cream, taking longer and other factors I think you’ll be more than happy with this razor. In my past experience, the easier the electric razor is to use, the worse the shave will be. But this philips razor has proven that theory wrong. It’s easy. It’s fast. It’s close. Win win win.
I’m really happy with this unit and will for sure be using this wet/dry electric razor for a very long time. I’m sorry I can’t comment on shaving the face but hopefully this is helpful still in general and for any other guys out there that are tired of shaving their heads with a traditional razor and want a quick and easy alternative without sacrificing performance, this is the razor for you!
PROS:
- Close shave
- Fast and pain-free (dry or wet)
- Ability to use in the shower and with shaving cream
- Replace blades just every 12 months
- Easy cleaning/rinsing
- Attached trimmer (I didn’t get into this in the review but that’s because it’s exactly what you think. Helps trim sideburns and edges. Works as advertised)
- Has a long charge and charges fast
- Good value for price
CONS:
- Can’t be used while plugged in (for obvious water reasons) but does have a quick charge to get 5 min shave when needed
- slightly awkward to hold at times
- that’s about it. Really hard to think of negatives
