      Norelco doesn't care

I contacted Phillips Norelco after I prepared a review of this product and submitted it to them as I was amazed with their response. Rather than post my review so others could see my concern for the way the shaver performed they indicated that they wouldn't post my comments as it could impact sales. The razor requires going over the same portion of your face multiple times. I am over 65 and my beard doesn't grow very fast and it doesn't grow very thick. I had kept an inexpensive razor in my car for many years for maintenance purposes. I shave with a Shick Extreme 3 and shaving creme every 1-2 days but sometimes want an electric razor for keeping in the car. This Norelco razor for one reason or another doesn't do the job. Norelco suggested a higher grade set of blades to be installed in this razor. I tried that and it didn't eliminate the problem. I do not believe the battery is strong enough and the rotation speed is not enough to get the job done. After they refused to publish my review I contacted Norelco's customer service and they suggested I upgrade to the 8000 or 9000 series which are far more powerful. They indicated the razor I had purchased was a low end razor and didn't always meet the customer's needs. If this is the case they probably shouldn't sell it at all or indicate for young adults first shaving. Doesn't make sense as my beard is minimal. That would result in my going from a $60 razor to a $250 razor and that's far more than I want to spend for the way I use it. Great solution for the company but not for the user. Either the unit is defective or it is not built well. They never offered to send a prepaid envelope to bring the razor back to the factory and inspect it. I would avoid this razor.

I've used Norelco's since 1994 and I have been shaving my face and head daily for over a decade. I've used the Speed XL/HQ9 shaving heads, ever since they were introduced. I wanted to try the wet shaving feature, but I'm not a big fan of the latest body style. This older style with the built in trimmer suits me best. However, the included HQ8 shaving heads are terrible/slow compared to the HQ9 shaving heads. I tried the wet shaving and and wasn't impressed. It seemed that I took longer and I seemed to be going over the sames area repeatedly. A colleague of mine told me that he thought the HQ8 and HQ9 were interchangeable. I swapped in my two year old HQ9 shaving heads and gave the wet shave another try. WOW, what a difference! What was taking 10 minutes to wet shave only took about five minutes and with less much less effort. I'm not sure why Norelco is not marketing HQ9 shavers anymore. Maybe it's to differentiate between the highest tier shavers and the HQ8. If it is, it's a terrible decision. My suggestion, if you buy this product, please replace the HQ8 shaving heads with a set of HQ9 shaving heads. You'll then get the best of both worlds, the ability to wet shave with the old style built-in trimmer body and with the HQ9 shaving heads get a faster, closer shave.

I purchased a Norelco Quadra Action rechargeable razor for my hubby sometime before 2007. He can not use a straight-edged razor due to meds that make him easily bleed, and use of only one hand. The Quadra was fantastic, and just recently the battery died. We purchased this specific shaver, thinking that it would be an equal to the Quadra, but it is not. Sometimes, weight helps in the balance in the hand, and this newer model is very very light, which...may be nice, but it is harder to handle, if you know what I mean? Beside the cheaper components (design cut corners in mechanisms in the head), it mirrored a very cheap knock-off brand selling with another retail competitor. The part that convinced me to return it was the thumb press for the back trimmer. The Quadra has a cut out circle, which houses the thumb nicely for pressing it open. This newer model does not grip well, was tightly stuck, and we were unable to open it up, unless we pried it open with a letter opener. Because of the pressure we had to apply, the razor kept turning on (power button positioned on opposite side) We are heading back today to check out the Norelco model 8240XL, at nearly double the price, but we are hoping that it will mirror the original Quadra that worked so well. If not, will check into buying a new battery for the Quadra, that is how well designed it was.

I have been an electric shaver user for ManyMany years (RemingtonXLR3000.) The Remington is a foil shaver. It is important for you to understand your individual situation. IMHO if at 5pm your face feels like course sandpaper with steel wool, that can smooth a 2X4, then maybe an electric shaver is not for you. I purchased the Norelco because I could no longer repair the Remington and foils were discontinued [by Remington.] I have used the Norelco one month and the experience has been terrific. I charged it once a week before warning light even came in. I find it takes less time to shave with the Norelco than the old Remington and I get a better shave. Just move the shaver Slowly across your face. I start under one ear SLOWLY move across neck to other ear then up and across face. Then a little extra work on chin. Every few days I pop the top and simply blow out hairs. I haven't had need to "wash it." The trimmer does a great job on my mustache. One pblm I did have- I tried to shave the area between nose and mustache and accidentally shaved half the mustache because one of the 3-cutters was positioned down. I will stay with the excellent pop-up trimmer. IMHO you don't need the floating head shaver. [I purchased spare cutters at WM less expensive.]

      A Great Electric Shaver.

      Posted

I have used an Electric shaver most of my life and I am 72 years old. Most of that time I have used Norelco products. I think three times I tried a different brands and was not happy with the other products So when my last shaver started acting up and by the way it was 10 years old I went to buy another Norelco. I bought the shaver 4100 based on the reviews it had and I have had it about a week and it is great. I would highly recommend it for comfort and based on past experience with Norelco reliability. My only complaint is that it doesn't come with a case or pouch to store it in. I went on the Norelco website to register my shaver and couldn't find any case to purchase separately. But that may have been me or maybe Norelco's website that I really don't like. I thought it was badly designed and Norelco might want to give some thought to that. One other point I would like to make is that Best Buy is the place to go to purchase your product. The reason for that is because I found the same shaver on Walmarts website for $10.00 less and since I didn't want to deal with the crowds at Walmart I went to Best Buy and told them about it and they matched Walmarts price.

      Comparison with old Norelco

I am replacing a very old (10 -12 yrs) Norelco Quadra Action razor that still works. However, its aging nick-cad batteries only gives me about 4 shaves per charge and may not be long for this world. The new razor with its lithium batteries gives me about a month and a half worth of shaves per charge. The new razor is approximately an ounce lighter than the old, and slightly smaller in girth. I would rate the quality of the shaves as equal. Given the price, I am very satisfied with the razor and I suspect its lifespan will be about the same. I should mention that I have a very light beard, though I do shave every day. I never bother to buy new heads because after a few hours I can feel new beard growth anyway, so why bother? Even after all these years, my old razor still cuts close enough with original blades. I prefer electric razors because they keep a lot of steel out of landfills. One tip - if you pop the head off of your razor and put it in your dishwasher, it cleans up very well and saves a lot of time.

Very quiet and the price was great on Black Friday. I have used Norelco shavers for years and when my last one would no longer hold a charge I went looking for a replacement. I had decided to purchase the 3500 model from Amazon which was $49.99 and had a $5.00 rebate included from Norelco but decided to wait a few weeks and see what might come around for Black Friday and Best Buy had the 4100 for only $34.99. I bought it as soon as I could. The shaver is light and much quieter than my previous model even though they look almost identical. This new one also shaves much closer. Although I will not be using this one in the shower it can be used that way if you chose. The down side to this is you can not use the shaver while it is charging like my old one but so far that is not an issue. It has been over a month and I still have not had to charge it. I showed it to a friend who also was looking for a new shaver and he bought one too and is very happy with it. Hopefully this one will last as long as my previous one which was probably 5-6 years. Couldn't recommend more. Thanks Best Buy.

Bought this to replace an old Panasonic foil wet/dry electric shaver. I had switched to the foil from a previous Norelco rotary to see if it was any better. The foil shaver did not cut as well and took much longer. I started going back to my Mach 3 razor because it was quicker and more efficient. I bought this on sale over the holidays to use when I travel. This model works even better than my old Norelco. Battery life seems good - I've had about 5 shaves on 1 charge & it hasn't sounded like it's started to fade yet. I'm so glad I switched back. I haven't touched my Mach 3 razors since I've bought this. This shaver is so easy to clean. I haven't used it wet yet but don't see the need. Very satisfied customer - hope it lasts as long as my old one which I had for over 5 yrs.
