Software holds this head unit back a bit

The menu options are logical and the display resolution is really good. The challenge I am having are screen latency. Screen presses take a 2-3 seconds to register and the wireless smartphone connectivity connects automatically only 50% of the time, as some other people have said in reviews. The screen latency is frustrating and makes using the device less safe as you constantly have to pay attention to what it is doing after you press it. The volume touch screen is also very frustrating as the unit starts out loud and frantic button pressing does nothing. The bluetooth not connecting half the time is also really frustrating as what is the point to pay extra to have it and it not work. I have a lower model DMH-W2770NEX in another car and this head unit is ultra responsive with the full touch screen and wireless smart phone connectivity. Not sure why this DMH-WT3800NEX is underperforming. For the premium price and the complexity of the mounting hardware for install and NEX software issues, I cannot recommend this head unit.

You really can't beat a dial. I find myself scrambling to turn it up and down on the touch screen. Such an amazing product hampered by this huge flaw. Maybe tactile buttons or anything except touch screen for volume. It's a huge fail, besides that the thing works amazingly well. We love the GUI and how android and apple have separate but completely functional systems integrated.

Perfect upgrade from a factory system

The sound quality is so much better and the Apple Carplay is a very big plus for me. The stereo also notifies me if a have a door ajar or if my tire pressures are low. No more pulling out my phone either for navigation as everything shows on the 9" display. I was also able to perfectly match the color of the touch controls with my interior lights. This head unit is well worth the money.

Good but could be better

The DMH-WT3800NEX comes with a spacer, to extend the screen from the dash. Have your installer check to see if they used that spacer and if it is possible to install it without the spacer.

Siri With Carplay is Broken

I love the stereo and the way it fits in my 2017 Highlander, but Siri is not working reliably with CarPlay. She seems to be getting confused as if she’s listening to herself speak. I can’t send text messages using Siri, for example. My wife and my iPhones are on the latest 17.2 iOS and the head unit has the latest firmware 1.55. I’ve seen others report online about similar issues with CarPlay and Pioneer stereos or stock head units in other vehicles but this is unacceptable. I’m not seeing too many reports with this particular unit, so wondering if I just got a bad unit and should exchange it. Very disappointed so far as my iPhone works perfectly with Siri and CarPlay in my stock Audi Q5.
