I returned the next day. It bent two of my 100.00 memory cards. Making them no good.

    Perfect Reader

Just picked this up today since I have been transferring files from my DLSR to my iMac and it was taking so long. I wanted a USB 3.0 set up and this worked like a charm. Plugged it in and inserted my microSD into the slot and whamo! Files started transfering at a much better speed. Simple easy, small but with all the slots I will ever need. Nice product and I am very happy with my selection and purchase. I would recommend this to anyone, not just a friend.

Solid in a pinch, but not a go-to

I purchased this reader a couple months ago. I'm a freelance photojournalist and was living with a staff photographer at the second-largest paper in the state, and I had been using his personal card reader before he took another job. I had been using a PixelFlash USB 3.0 reader, and I experienced a very noticeable drop in speed. I just bought a new PixelFlash USB-C for my new MacBook, and I look forward to going back to what I got used to before. That said, I would highly recommend this reader to anyone who isn't consistently working on a nightly print deadline. It gets solid speed and it's reasonably priced. And even for someone like me, it'd be a darn good backup reader if you're in a bind. I rated it as a 3 here, but it's really more of a 3.5 to me.

The product works as I expected it too. I would certainly recommend this product as it fits many card size needs.

    Consistently Slow

Good - the reader worked with all media I tested. Bad - the reader was almost always slower than my old USB 2 reader; reader feels cheap. I have a 6 year old USB 2 media reader and another USB 3 media reader, both made by Transcend. This Insignia reader was half the speed of my old USB 2 reader and didn't come that close to the USB 3 reader (exception being Compact Flash, where this reader was faster than my USB 2 reader and about half as fast as my other USB 3 reader). This Insignia reader also feels cheap to the touch and cards don't insert smoothly. Don't waste your time waiting on this reader to do its job, instead look elsewhere.

Good price but poor design and average quality

    Posted .

As a disclaimer, this is my first USB 3.0 card reader so I don't have anything else to compare this against. Pros: Fast file transfer. Sleek, compact design Offers support for SD/Micro SD, CF, M.2 and others. Cons: USB port is on the same side as the SD card slot, which makes it awkward to put on your desk and use, since you can't have the SD card slot facing outwards without the cable sticking out in front too. SD cards must be inserted upside down, which is different from other card readers I've used (USB 2.0 ones). The included cord is fairly short, if your computer is on the floor it probably wouldn't reach to the top of your desk (where most people keep their card readers) The card reader itself is very light weight, and the USB cable seems to push it around on the desk top. It's hard to get it to stay where you put it without velcro or double sided tape. Final thoughts: For $30, it's an average card reader, but I almost wish I'd spent a few more dollars and bought an internal reader (or some other brand) instead. If you need a high speed card reader and you're in a pinch this will get you by, but overall I can't say I'm impressed. This will probably end up in my laptop bag for on-the-go use and I'll buy a more well-designed card reader for use with my desktop computer.

    Faulty after 2 uses

This card reader was quick like I expected. The files transferred fast from card to computer, but for some reason it started acting faulty after a couple of uses and couldn't read or render my RAW files. This happened very sporadically, had nothing to do with the cards I was using, and would load some images on the card but not others (I could still view them all in camera). I wouldn't recommend it.

    Returned it.

I have a 2015 27" iMac. I tried to load CF and Micro cards using this reader, and was on the phone with Apple for over an hour! Running OS 10.11.3. We could not get this device to work. The device has a proprietary USB cable so none of my other 4 USB cables would fit. It could have been a bad cable but I don't think so. I was able (spotty though) to get CF disks to mount on my 2015 MacBook Pro. The layout of the slots is inconvenient, and the light is only on one side... so if you're load into the other side your out of luck. I returned it the day I purchased it. 30+ years of professional photography experience, and Mac user and support person since 1982.

Worked great for a few weeks

This was a great reader the first few weeks, then it stopped working. I started having to unplug it, wait, try again. And eventually I'd have to restart my computer to get it to be recognized. It's not my computer, all of the USB ports work great. The reader would disconnect on its own before I was finished uploading photos and was extremely slow before it just quit working. If you'd asked me about it the first week, I'd have raved about it. Now? Don't bother. I'm going with a different brand.

I bought this product in Jan. 2017 and by June, it's already broken. One of the metal prongs on the inside fell off, and my computer won't read the cards.

    DO NOT PURCHASE

I bought this Insignia card reader a few months ago when I upgraded to a camera with a CF card. I thought that for $30, it would be a reasonably good product, I wasn't buying a $10 thing on amazon. I am a semi-professional photographer, and I have a high quality card, and a higher end consumer computer. Last weekend after spending the whole weekend getting photos for a charity auction, I went to upload and found the majority of my files were corrupted and unable to be used. I deleted then from my computer and tried to upload again, and this time it worked. Today I went into Boston to photograph street performers and city scapes, and I came home to edit them. The same thing happened again. I attempted to delete the files and re-upload. Corrupted files again. This has gone on for about 3 hours now. I would not recommend anybody get this product. It is cheaply made, does not function well, and will waste time, money, and your patience. Someone with a short temper could easily be motivated to destroy their $5k computer setup because of this non-functional product in a nice looking case. Spend $5 more and get a good one from a photo superstore with reputable brands. You'll thank me when this stops functioning after the return policy expires.

    Poor performance

I have the same device in a USB 2 version. I bought this one to get faster transfers. When using this it is no faster than the USB 2 version. I tried a variety of methods to remove other factors but a cheap USB 3 micro sd card reader I have performs more than twice as fast. I experienced 8mbs with this device connected directly to the computer whereas I experienced 21mbs with the cheaper unit.

    Extremely SLOW Reader.

There is really nothing to say except card being way too slow. It reads at various speeds but mostly below 1MB/s plugged in to USB 3 or USB 3.1 slot on my desktop. My SanDisk Extreme Pro 64GB which is capable of 160MB/s won't go more than 1MB/s on this reader. Took me over 10 minutes to transfer 9GB of Photos. This reader is Garbage. Wasted $30.

    Worked great, until it didn't

I really liked that it was compatible with so many different memory devices. After less than a year, it just stopped working, even if I plug it directly into a USB 3.0 port. The computer doesn't recognize it anymore. It comes with a one year warranty, but of course for such a small item I didn't save the receipt, so I have a piece of useless junk.

I have had this product 2 months. Doesn't work 1/2 the time. For reliability purposes, I have gone back to transferring directly from my camera. Using SanDisk Extreme PRO cards. Compact Flash and SDHC. I have rated this a 1. For my purposes, a 0 would be best severed.

Do not but this is you're looking to transfer files from an MicroSD card. If it works, you're lucky and probably won't work next time you plug it in. Had it for a year and it was a giant waste of money.
