Beware if you need to return

Tried to return the original today but was confronted with a different serial number than what was listed on the receipt. They said they wouldn't take it back because the serial numbers don't match and I would need to do the leg work in order to get it figured out. I left the store and researched online to find out the serial number on the box is a package number and each individual piece has their own serial numbers. Apparently meta didn't relay this information to their retail locations or the managers at Best Buy don't know what they're doing. Either way it was a frustrating and waste of time experience for me.

A friend from Pennsylvania bought me this exact Meta Quest 3 512GB. He drove it, never shipped, never opened the box. Box is perfect. Item is perfect. He does not have a receipt as the Best Buy website was making him create a new profile over and over. Same thing happened to me at Rockville Maryland. Exactly same thing. So it is in pristine condition, never opened and he does not have a receipt. He thought I had until the 14th of January 2025. Is there nothing I can do? I'm stuck with a $500 paperweight? I don't do this stuff.
