It sounds like you are experiencing some installation issue with the device. The Ring Outdoor Cam (Formerly known as the Ring Stick Up Cam) can be mounted on the ceiling or a wall using the Ring Mount for Stick Up Cam which is sold separately. This allows you to adjust the angle for optimal motion detection and field of view. It also comes with a spare parts kit so you can set everything up in just a few minutes.

Battery lasts longer than it does in the doorbell but I haven't tried it outdoors yet. The cold Minnesota winters can sure drain a battery. I will get another one, but a wired one since this one sits about a foot from an electrical socket.
