It's irritating to have to change the battery, but we purchased an extra one that we charge ahead of time for a smooth switch. The app takes some getting used to, but it works great once you do. I especially like the feature that lets you customize the motion detecting area, getting rid of unnecessary motion alerts. We bought a second one for our office door.

Very Nice Doorbell

As a doorbell, this Ring is very attractive and works very well, and the doorbell video function works well, too. The video view of my entry area, driveway, and street in front, is very good and clear. The motion detection function is a nice idea but seems erratic. There are settings to adjust but I have not been able to get them just right. It detects cars going by, which I don't want, but sometimes does not alert to motion that is actually in my driveway. Also, night motion detection does not seem very good. However, as a video doorbell, I am very pleased with the Ring Video Doorbell 3 because that's what I bought it for.

It sounds like you have some concerns with the motion detection of your device. The Ring Video Doorbell 3 offers advanced motion detection with customizable motion zones. Camera Motion Zones can help you detect motion in the areas that matter the most to you and reduce the number of "false" motion alerts (such as cars driving by). By drawing your camera's motion zones to exclude high-traffic areas like public paths and roads, you can increase your Ring device's effectiveness. Follow these tips to optimize your camera's motion zones:
Make your Ring device's view as clear as possible. Motion detection can sometimes trigger "false" alerts because of moving trees, lightning, the rising or setting sun, reflections off a shiny object, headlights, shadows, and more. To reduce false alerts, adjust your motion zones, remove shiny objects, cut back tree branches that create moving shadows, or angle your device to avoid the sun.
Look for high-traffic areas. Note any high-traffic areas, such as busy streets or sidewalks. If you receive too many motion alerts from your Ring device, you can adjust your motion zones to exclude these areas.
Exclude areas you don’t need to monitor. Note the potential paths people take to approach your device. Then redraw your motion zones to exclude areas where you rarely see people, such as behind locked gates, hedges, or walls.
If your device is capturing an excessive number of events each day, you may need to recharge your battery sooner. To prevent excessive activity, under Motion Settings for your device in the Ring app, you can:
Adjust your Motion Sensitivity slider to a lower sensitivity
Redraw your Customizable Motion Zones
Change Motion Frequency to regularly or periodically
You could also adjust the direction of your Ring device so it doesn't detect as much motion.
