It sounds like the device is not performing as expected. Ring devices rely on both your upload and download internet speeds to send and retrieve videos from the server. If either or both of those functions are too slow, this can significantly affect download times. That's why it's important to test your internet speed in the area around your Ring device.

To test your internet speed, do the following:

Bring your mobile device to the area where your Ring Video Doorbell 3 is installed.
Open a Web browser on your mobile device and go to Bandwidth Place.
Click on the Begin Test button in the center of the gauge to start the test.
After the test is done, look at the small table under the gauge. The number in the first column is the download speed. The number in the second column is the upload speed.
As a general rule, most Ring devices function best when upload and download speeds are around 2 Mbps or greater. If your speeds are much slower than that, you might try moving your router closer to your Ring device or (if necessary) calling your internet service provider to discuss getting faster internet speeds.

A potential cause of battery drain is having a poor wifi signal. The battery drains as the doorbell repeatedly attempts to connect to your wifi network. This could also explain the issues when answering the door.

The Ring Video Doorbell 3 is designed to detect motion based on your specifications so that you are notified of all motion events that matter to you. We would love the opportunity to work with you to get your device performing optimally for your home's environment.

It sounds like you have some concerns with your device's motion detection. If your device appears to be missing a lot of motion, you may want to check the motion frequency setting. The motion frequency control allows you to reduce alerts from repetitive patterns of motion or increase alerts so you get notified about the motion events that matter to you.

Follow these steps to adjust the motion frequency:
Tap the menu (≡) on the top left of the Dashboard.
Tap Devices.
Select the device you'd like to adjust.
Tap Motion Settings.
Tap Advanced Settings.
Tap Motion Frequency.
Select Frequently, Regularly or Periodically.
Frequently: Motion detection always stays active. Shortest battery life.
Regularly: Motion detection takes a short break after each Motion Alert. Medium battery life.
Periodically: Motion detection takes a longer break after each alert. Maximum battery life.
Tap Save in the upper-right corner.

The Ring Home Plan provides valuable capabilities, such as accessing paid features and the ability to save, download, and review footage captured by your Ring device. Without a Ring Home Plan, you can still view real-time video for Ring doorbells and cameras and answer doorbell notifications when they happen, but you don’t get video recordings of those events.
