The thicker jacket is what allows it to go inside a wall. This is to help prevent interference from any other wires that might be inside the wall as well. It also helps prevent the cable to breaking as they can be bent to insert them into the jacks. If you're running cables in the wall, make sure it says CL-2 on the jacket. That way you know is in-wall rated. This cable has that identification.
