But it also makes a horrible, high pitched whine. The old version (which charged with a USB-C cable) didn't make this sound, but unfortunately the old one doesn't work with the OLED model.

You really need Nintendo USB C power cables otherwise the Switch will yell at you. Apparently, the Switch does a check for power draw capacity and it requires a certain minimum for both display and charging. Be warned.
