It should default to cold water wash as most laundry is washed in cold water to save energy. I do multiple loads of colored and have to remember each time to change the water setting and only do one load of whites each week which is the only load that is washed on a hot setting.

However I would love to have a users' manual for the washing machine . And with all of the calls I made no one was interested in trying to provide me with one! I was very disappointed.
