Customers are impressed with the Smart Remote X's ease of use, elegant design, and Bluetooth capabilities, finding setup straightforward and the point mode innovative. However, some users cite concerns regarding battery life, compatibility issues with certain devices, and the remote's size and high price point. The touchscreen, while praised by some for its responsiveness, is criticized by others for its lack of physical buttons and small screen size. Overall, the Smart Remote X receives positive feedback for its user-friendly features but also faces criticism regarding several aspects of its functionality and cost.

I really, really wanted to like this remote. It's sleek - but it's so cumbersome to use. It's small and I have small hands so you think it'd work, but I misclick stuff constantly. Toggling through each individual remote setup is soooo time-consuming compared to Logitech remotes where it just WORKS (sometimes ;) ). Updating the remote via the phone app is a nightmarish experience if it doesn't work. Lots of disconnections to remote itself. When it does work it automatically detects what's in your AV setup, which is insanely nice. However...
The company has been bought out so I don't think they're even updating this remote anymore. For the 300 bucks I shelled for it, it feels like such a rip-off. Save your money. It had such potential with some upgrades.

I have had multiple harmony remotes over the years so I compare any new remotes to them. This remote was easy to setup and one positive over the Harmony remote I also have in another room is the ability to update/modify the remote from the app on my phone. The hassle with Harmony having to make changes from my PC was something I was not fond of and like the ease of the Sevenhugs app.
The biggest complaints I have about this remote are the size and battery life. I have larger hands but not banana hands and it is so small I feel like I may break it and it does make pressing buttons on screen a challenge at times. The battery life is also not what I would expect and has to be charged daily if not kept on the base station when not in use.
The feature using the sensors is pretty cool I have to say that allows you to point at certain devices in a room. I have it in my bedroom with a 4K TV, XBOX One X, AT&T Uverse Box, and a wireless light adapter from TP-Link. When I point the remote at the lights it gives me the control for the lights. When I point ar the TV it gives me the controls for the TV. I was able to create a scene that automatically turns on the TV and then either XBOX if I want to game or Uverse box when I just want to watch TV. One shortcoming which has a few upvotes on their forums is a screen with favorites buttons like my Harmony has. I use that feature more than just about anything else on my Harmony so I feel a large void with this remote and software not having the same feature when Logitech has had it for years.
Overall the remote works as advertised but understand how small it is and also some of the limitations with its functionality which could be easily remedied with software updates.

Hey Shaun,
First we would like to thank you for the review and feedback. The size of the remote is something that we deliberated a lot on internally and we felt like the size we eventually went for would universally suit a lot of users who make use of Smart devices as it resembles the size of a thinner mobile phone. However we do have newer versions of the Smart Remote coming out later on this year which could feature different sizes and models.
With regards to the battery life, our Smart Remote is a touchscreen universal remote that will tend to consume more battery than a normal remote and will need to be charged more often. We are working constantly to make improvements on this, we already have some features to improve this such as “Auto wifi off” and more will be released soon..
With regards to the favourite button feature, this is indeed one of our planned features from the start and still currently undergoing integration testing, we plan integration for this during Q1 2019 so please stay tuned.it should be live at some point during Q1 2019 so please stay tuned.
For anything else we can assist you with please do not hesitate to go over to our support website at https://support.sevenhugs.com/ and contact a member of our support team, we would be more than happy to assist you with anything you may need.

I REALLY loved the idea of this; I even watched a few videos before it arrived from the company so I thought I was prepared for its use.
Setup was a breeze. The app installed without issue. The remote setup was simple and got pushed an update as soon as it connected to WiFi.
There are some things that you need to understand when using this remote. This can be configured two different ways: by default it acts as a traditional ‘universal’ remote, though it needs to contact your mobile App to fully add new devices. The other way is a ‘point-to-control’ type mode.
Traditional Remote Mode:
The remote is a bit cumbersome to use, let me explain. It’s a very small touch screen. To get from volume up/down to Menu Up/Down (for example), you have to swipe left or right. While that may not seem like a big deal, it can be. To go from TV to Receiver (for another example), you have to use the top of the small screen to swipe to the device you want to control. IF you accidentally tap the device at the top, it shuts that device off. If you have a TON of devices to control, like I do, you can get lost and miss the image.
When you add a device, it seems to "download" configuration specific to your device - but it doesn't. It downloads generic IR codes for that vendor and the buttons it gives you don't always (or for me, ever) line up. For example: Aux 1 on the remote, is "TV" -- and TV is Aux 10 (which my receiver doesn't have). You have to re-map the buttons which to me, defeats the purpose.
Now, if you want to use the ‘point to control’ mode - and thus saving yourself from having to swipe to select a device to control you have to install / hang the sensors around the room.
While that may not seem all that awful, it is. Each sensor MUST see the other *and* they all have to see the charging base. All 3 need to be installed even if it’s an 8x10 room because the remote seems to always be emitting IR in this mode - and uses 3x sensors to triangulate where it’s pointing.
Oh yeah, the charging base. It’s USB-C which is great, though it has to sit upright and I can only see it getting bumped and snapping off. I was hoping it was a magnetic charging base … maybe for the next version.
But before that mode works, you have to hold the remote in front of the device you want to control and ‘pair’ it with that spot in your room.
Point at the TV, the input on the screen switches to TV and you get a slight haptic vibration … pretty cool.
Well, it’s cool if you only have one thing in that general direction. If you have, say, a TV with a receiver below it, you can’t control them both because there is no height determination with the sensors, just general direction. To control your TV, you should position the remote off to the side of the room during remote location pairing and then remember that you have to control the TV pointing nowhere near the TV.
The remote should be placed on the charger every night. After 2 nights of it being off the charger, it dies and needs to be re-calibrated with the sensors (point the remote at the blinky light for every sensor and hit a button). I have never needed to charge a remote overnight and have had it die three times already … and have fallen back to my old remote + Google Home integration.
Lastly, there is no way to start/turn on SmartTV Apps -- not natively. While you CAN set up a routine to turn on TV, Receiver, change Input -- but it can’t launch, Netflix, for example. Yet. They say it's coming. The way around it is to “create a mapped button” from a remote that *can* launch Apps. Even then, it can’t be part of the routine, you have to hit the button afterwards.
I reached out to support with some general questions and they were responsive, so they have that going for them.
It does control my Hue lights without issue, though it always starts at "yellow" so if you want to solely lower the brightness, it changes it to yellow first and then lowers it. That's pretty annoying.
At this time and with these limitations, I can’t recommend this remote. I just can’t.

We’re sorry to hear that Smart Remote is underperforming for you in a few areas, but thanks for sharing all this detailed feedback. We’d like to get in touch with you to follow up on a couple points that seem like unexpected behavior. Please send us an email at [email protected] when you get a chance. In the meantime, here are a couple tips that should improve your overall experience:
1) The best way to control your entertainment center is by creating AV Scenes, which allow you to control multiple devices simultaneously with a single button. You can also combine controls from multiple devices into one interface (e.g. control volume for your AVR on your TV control screen) All your AV Scenes will appear in a list on Smart Remote. Just tap the device you want to watch and let Smart Remote do the rest (turn on the right devices, switch to the right AV inputs, display the right control screen). You can easily access all your AV Scenes in either Manual Selection Mode or Point Mode. Once you’ve created AV Scenes for all your media players and set top boxes, there really no reason to control one of these individually any more.
2) The best way to control your home theater in Point Mode is to locate your AV Scene list at your TV. This way, when you point at your TV, you’ll see a list of all the media players and set-top boxes that are available to watch with a single tap.
3) If you don't like how a default control screen is designed, you can fully customize all the controls and buttons for any devices or AV Scene using the Smart Remote app.

The best functioning remote I have tried

The remote functionality is outstanding and there more brands in the works according to the manufacturer.
I have it paired with a Samsung television and two LG televisions and all functionality is there. I also have it paired with two Roku Ultra devices and once again it’s flawless.
The remote is small and easily fits into a front pocket. It looks classy and I’m afraid of scratching it or damaging it.
It did not pair well with my PlayStation, but I’d use the controllers anyway.
I dinged it by one star because it doesn’t have a power on capability without first docking it. This isn’t handy when using it in multiple rooms on different floors. It needs a power button.
Other than that, this is a winner.

Finally a sleek universal remote that covers all you ir devices and covers streaming boxes, gaming and smart home devices. It was easy to setup and there were included puck’s you can setup to cover the ir signal thru the whole room. Only issue is the remote is small for remotes with a lot of buttons but that is a tiny con. Really great remote. Cannot wait to add more smart lights for a whole room experience.

I am not sure why this device exists – aside from possibly combining several remotes into one remote, this thing has absolutely no value. I am no novice to technology – I repair laptops and desktop computers. This device is baffling and frustrating. And it nearly flew across the room before I put it back in its box. It is simply not good enough to buy and is overkill to the max on what it says it can do and what it really can do.
It is complex to set up and is frustrating in its obtuse nature to comprehend what instructions are provided.
This is supposed to be a remote, but it needs to spend much time on its charger to do at least three updates and then odd reasons that only its maker knows.
I have several wireless options here at my house – even when the unit was placed next to one of the know working wireless network, the device refused to connect; when I placed it next to the second known working wireless network, it worked just fine.
Connecting the unit to the tv and to the roku were easy; the bluray player worked somewhat leaving many buttons off and impossible to navigate horizontally on the bluray player menu. If all I wanted was to play bluray disks, this would work. However, this unit is very expensive and should be able to do more than metaphorically crawl.
As to the other use, to set up locations with those white circular devices, this is one of the most obtuse and non-understandable technological devices I’ve seen. I got the pointer to work on each of the white dots and it saw the blue lights to calibrate. Beyond that it became useless for anything. I’m not sure what to do as the instructions are very bad and the readout on the menu is worthless.
Save your money and buy something that will coordinate your various devices; there are much much cheaper options. The other stuff this device says it can do really is a waste of time. You can’t figure out what it wants or is asking and by the time you’ve figured something out, you burned a roast like I just did.
I would not recommend this at all.

I really love this device. It's easy to program and supports all of the main device room where I have it set-up (TV, Bose stereo, AppleTV, DVD player). I'm just waiting for the Nest integration to cap it all off. The design is really intuitive and simple. There are a few things that could be improved in the UI but this is better than any other remote that I've seen.

The Sevenhugs Smart Remote has a small sleek dock that takes the guessing out of where my partner left the remote last and allows for easy, consistent charging. In the Marie Kondo of it all it's nice that it has a home to go to when it's not in use.
This remote also makes sharing our Sonos speakers a breeze. And the set up was extremely easy!
And here's the GAME CHANGER. I was able to preset different home set-ups for all my different activities and moods. I have one set up for TV, Everyday Music, Yoga, Dance Party, Dinner Party... The options are endless!

I have owned a lot of remotes from cheap Wal Mart ones to many Harmony’s including the Harmony Elite. I’ve even had a Neeo. Stay away from that one. This Sevenhugs is by far the easiest to setup and use. Setup is wifi and smartphone and only took me a matter of minutes to set my equipment to it. I absolutely love this remote and highly recommend to buy.

I’ve been using Smart Remote for 2 months now. It took me a bit of time to get to know all features available and to set it up so I can enjoy it the way I need to. Some of the features aren’t easy to find in the app or on the remote. At first, Smart Remote was not meeting all my needs because it couldn’t control my Amazon Fire TV, but Sevenhugs has been great about launching new features and updates every month and they recently released a Bluetooth integration for Amazon Fire TV with a really great trackpad feature. It lets me whip around the screen a lot faster my Fire TV remote. I had some doubts about using a touchscreen remote, but the new trackpad features definitely makes it worth it. I didn’t have the highest expectations heading in, but I’ve been pleasantly surprised by Smart Remote. Definitely worth a look if you’re in the market for cutting-edge universal remote. Just make sure it supports all the devices you care about most.

I decided to give this product a try on a whim. I had never even heard of Sevenhugs. Let me tell ya, it was an awesome decision. First off, the packaging is great and feels very high-end when unboxing. Great presentation. I had my remote out of the box, powered on, and connected to Wifi in under 5 minutes.
Once I downloaded the Sevenhugs app, I had no trouble setting up all of my devices including my Apple TV, Toshiba Fire Edition TV, Xbox, Spotify account, and Phillips Hue smart lights. That only took about 15 minutes, and was a super simple process and the instructions were super clear. I can’t wait to setup my cable remote and try my Xbox remote too!
Obviously there are some remotes and devices that will be a bit more difficult to setup or to custom configure the remote interface, but that’s to be expected from this kind of device so I can’t fault them for this at all. Even then, it is still quicker than a lot of the competition, and the user experience is definitely superior.
I highly recommend this product if you’re looking for a high end, practical, and fun-to-use smart remote to accommodate not only your home theater setup but also your home automation setup, then this is absolutely the product for you.

The remote offers a great guided experience to setting up all of your components. It’s able to integrate with a lot of smart devices that a traditional multi-function remote wouldn’t be able to, like the LIFX Smartbulbs
The “point to control” is really amazing once you set it up, although I wish it was better at handling situations where multiple devices are close to each other, or those in a stack setup. The screen is bright, but a little small to initially get used to. While in beta it has great out of the box support and looking forward for improved “recipe” modes.

I use my remote typically with three devices, a flat screen tv, an Apple TV, and a amplifier. The remote turns everything on and off. I can control the Apple 4k TV (pause, FF, RW, change) and control the Onkyo Amplifier with one remote which is pretty simple to understand.
The remote also provides complete control over the Apple TV, Amazon, DirectTV Now, and all the other downloaded apps. The charger for the remote is easy to use. It's so easy that a pet sitter can use it.

This slim, dynamic, intuitive remote is easy to configure and use. When a button is missing, the addition of another control to a screen is easy to apply. Even multiple screens per controlled device can be edited to make this truly a custom remote. I find the Smart Remote replaces five other remotes that now live in a drawer. This device is a dream to use. Thank you for the thought and care in the creation of the Smart Remote.

Bought this product via Kickstarter and I’d say initially I would have given 3 stars, but they have made some amazing software updates and I’m really glad I purchased early. I’d say I’m leaning more 5 stars than 4. It made using our home’s entertainment room soo much easier. I have multiple TV’s for watching football and now I can easily control them all and my sound system from a single remote. If you have multiple systems set up I’d totally recommend this product. My wife also loves it because now she can easily control our Sonos speakers without my phone. Lastly, I think it looks better than most other remotes - probably the reason I initially pulled the trigger.

I have been hoping for an all in one remote for a long time, we have four remotes in the TV room. I purchased this remote about a month ago and it has solved all of our remote problems. I can do the basics on my computer and ipad and I set this remote up without any problems. It even has a program where I have one button that turns on all the devices to watch TV and one button to play a DVD. The remote adjusts all of the settings for each device. My receiver is a little older and it controls it just fine. I am very pleased with this device.

I love how simple the set up is and the ease to continually add components to the Seven Hugs universal remote. If I had one thing to say negative which is only a slight negative is the size of the actual remote is it’s simply too small make it a tad bigger with a color screen and boom walk off homer! LOVE IT...
Mine is currently setup to control :
LG Oled Tv
Comcast box

And 2 separate Nest thermostats
One thing to note I’m not using the wall pucks
so I can’t comment on there performance.
