    Electronic Wall Calendar

I wasn’t sure I needed a dedicated electronic wall calendar, but now that I’ve used it for a few days I really like it. I settled on the weekly view so it’s easy to see all the activities and at least some of the descriptions. If you have a large family or just a lot of activities, I think you’ll find this a handy addition to the home. The box was surprisingly heavy when it arrived, but after opening it I realized a lot of the weight was from the metal stand and wall bracket. I decided to use ours with the stand on the kitchen counter, mainly because there was a power outlet behind it and I could hide all the cables. The very heavy-duty stand is nice and stable when people are poking on the screen to enter things in the menus. The wall mount bracket looks very simple and easy to install, but I didn’t want to have a power cord hanging down below it to an outlet, especially with cats in the house. It was very easy to get on my home WiFi. I do have an “IoT” SSID that’s 2.4GHz only that I use for all the miscellaneous devices in the house like this, so that may have helped. I don’t know if it would have any problems connecting to the 5GHz WiFi. It was also very easy to get our Google calendars synced with it. The “dinner plan” feature has been surprisingly useful. While it can be done via the Skylight app, it’s been just as easy to add meals for the week right on the calendar. It’s nice to be able to quickly see what meals are coming up. I also set up the sleep timer, so the screen shuts off from 10:30pm until 6:00am when no one is likely to look at it. This is a nice feature and seems to work well. There are some things I don’t like about the Skylight calendar, though. The viewing angle is narrow—the image washes out pretty quickly when you move to either side. I also wish you could customize the look of the calendar more, like changing the background color palette, etc. If there is a way to do that, I’ve not found it yet. Probably the most annoying thing about the Skylight is the fact that it’s essentially a picture frame that’s working as a calendar. However, if you want to actually USE it as a picture frame you have to subscribe for $40/year for that functionality. This seems a little tacky. The only other feature you get with the subscription is the so-called “magic import” where you can send it an email with an event, and it’ll pull out the information and put it in the calendar. However, Gmail already does that, so if you’re syncing with Google calendar you pretty much already have that capability. It would have been nice if they’d include some limited form of picture frame functionality, like only so many pictures or something. But even with the few things I don’t like, I still like this calendar overall. It’s already secured its place in the kitchen and I’m sure we’ll continue to use it.

    Beautiful Presentation. Underwhelming Execution

The weight of the packaging telegraphs the feel of quality that you are about to behold. This has some heft to it as it is a 15 inch display inside a beautiful aluminum metallic frame with nice glass frontage. Inside the box you'll discover that some of the weight is in the mounting brackets that also give the aire of quality. Mounting screws are included along with a power brick. Like many items these days, there is an app that you must install in order to make use of the device. And this is where the first gotcha comes into play. The app really seems to be toward pushing you to a picture display setting that is EXTRA COST. Pictures would apparently rotate once the item has gone to sleep. Once you start using this, you'll notice the calendar function for tracking items and then the useful inclusion for families of "chores" that you can input. Weather is also available after you've connected to wifi. There is also a place where you can enter your "shopping list". This then leads to the second gotcha that reduced the usability of this device - there is nowhere to input any calendar that you've already put on your phone and to sync it up so that what you've already entered can be duplicated in a wall mounted calendar in your home. This seems very short sighted and really diminishes how'd use this. If I have to re-enter something, even with the large font and tactile sensation keyboard acknowledging input, I'd think twice about wasting time entering anything. The shopping list feature is a great idea if you mount in the kitchen, but it is also a bad idea since this cannot transfer information back to your phone so that you can remember what it was you entered on this device's shopping list. I checked the manual that comes with this and no mention of being able to connect and to use information to and from your phone. This is unacceptable. You cannot even "print" your shopping list!

No Issue with the product itself. I really like the aspect of it. However, it is disappointing that you still have to pay for a subscription in order to use its nice features.

I love the idea of having a central location with all of our family calendars on it. This really helps to give our busy family a wholistic view of everyone's schedules in one place so that we don't "forget" about anything. As a software and UI developer, I like that the Skylight calendar keeps the user interface simplistic and doesn't clutter it with a bunch of fluff and only semi-useful features. Adding most of our calendars was seamless by simply following the prompts and instructions. I was able to add both my personal and our shared family calendar (Apple iCal) easily enough. I was also able to easily sync my MealBoard calendar that I do our weekly meal planning on. For some reason, I haven't been able to add my wife's personal iCal or a public/subscribed Team calendar for my son's soccer schedule (the one I REALLY need to be on this calendar. Additionally, I don't like that to sync photos to the device requires a paid subscription; it would be nice if they would at least allow you a certain number of photos before requiring you to shell out a monthly or annual payment for a device that already costs quite a bit for what it is. I haven't played with the Chore chart or meal planner too much (mainly because I already use a Meal planning tool), but I'm sure this will add value once we get more used to it. Skylight includes both tabletop and wall-mounting options. For now, I just have this sitting on the counter until I decide where to permanently mount it. Overall, I'm pretty happy with the Skylight calendar and hope that it continues to make our busy day-to-day lives more manageable.

The skylight calendar allows us to put all our calendars in one place. For years, we did a whiteboard/chalkboard calendar in our home. We'd put all the important dates and schedules onto it. Things would change, we'd erase and edit. Now, with the skylight, we have it all there automatically. It's great because we all use different calendaring software. Microsoft Exchange, Google Calendar, Apple calendar-- all neatly in one place and color coded for us to see what's going on. You can set and invite family members and allow them to control which calendars sync to the skylight. I did have some issues with making adjustments to show or hide other calendars through google, but I got it resolved. Also, you are given an email address you can invite to calendar items to have it show on the skylight--which is really useful for those that use their calendar for business and personal, but don't want it to show everything at home. It does show the details on items marked as private, so that may become more important as we use it more. The task lists are simple to create and administer from the skylight app. I do wish they had better integrations for things like syncing with tasks on microsoft, apple or google. But the skylight is more of a hub. We put simple tasks for our son onto it, and he really enjoys checking off his list on a daily basis--it even shows a little celebration screen when he's completed all his tasks. Instead of reminding him, he's staying on top of chores on his own!

    Good Calendar Sync

I had high expectations for the Skylight Calendar and I guess those expectations were too high. The best thing this smart calendar does is just visualize and sync your Google calendars. The interface on the frame is awful. So many things could be streamlined and it's missing features. The app for the phone has more features than the frame. The biggest difference is that the frame only allows an event title and date/time. The app allows for details, location, and forecast. The app and frame do a great job of pulling together Google calendars in one place so the whole family can either look at the frame or pull up the Skylight app. However you can easily sync calendars on the phone already without the help of Skylight. There's also no notifications about events so you might as well stick with the Google calendar app. I just wanted something robust that would replace and act more like a traditional wall calendar. I don't have a good way or tracking bills unless you make them an event so that you can see upcoming expenses. Then you can't check them off so you'd need to make them a chore on a different tab to be able to mark them paid but then you can't see them in calendar view. You can't create an event without a category and you have to make a category before you create the event. There's no shortcut to create a new category during event creation. You just have to re-enter all the event details. If you want to track “Recycling Day” you have to make a category to assign that to. There are no built in categories like bills, birthdays, anniversaries, appointments, etc. You have to sit and create all those. I'd like to see fun icons like birthday cakes for events like Google has. A feature that does work good is the grocery list. You can easily add items to the list in the app or on the frame and as long as you have your phone, you've never forgotten the list. Great way to document things as soon as you remember them. Same way with the To-Do list. The chore view is handy for a family where there are a lot of chores across family members so you get a good checklist for everyone. But you have to train yourself to check that chore list everyday since the calendar has no indicators. And there's not difference in a person vs a category. So if you used categories outside of identifying people, then you have to scroll through all those to see real people with real chores. The frame itself seems nice. It's very light but comes with very sturdy hardware. I like you have the option for this to be on a heavy stand on the counter or mount on the wall. The display is clear with adjustable brightness. I think it really stands out that this is a company that makes digital picture frames. I do not like that there's no time out on the display. You either have to manually turn it off or set an explicit sleep time. I also can't believe that you have to subscribe monthly to be able to display photos on the frame... I just can't find enough perks with this calendar to recommend it to a friend. I like the concept but I don't like Skylight's execution. You can get used to the interface and train yourself to use the features the way they want. But I feel like good technology integrates seamlessly into life.

Best device ever. My stopped calling me during work to discuss planning with our kids after countless times and years of telling her PLEASE don't call me when I'm at work. lol. Well now that she can schedule from her phone and or the touchscreen now I can see it on my phone also and it alerts me. Plus the slideshow of cute pictures you can add remotely to the touchscreen is really cool. 100% recommend this to everyone especially married with children.
