    Slow and steady...

I will first and foremost like the state for the record that I am a huge Jack Johnson fan. When I first head "Brushfire Fairytales" I was taken with the unique song structure, phrasing, and simple yet infectous song writing. Jack quickly became and still remains one of my top 10 artists. The problem is that Jack wants to grow as an artist - seen here by his inclusion of more electric guitars and instruments - but may have picked a bad time in his life/career to begin such experimentation. The subject matter of "Sleep Through the Static" is heavier fare for Johnson who touches on the war, politics, loss of love and friends - all common themes in a mature and thinking artist's repretoire. What frustrates me most about this disc after about 10 listenings, isn't that Jack doesn't bring the goods - it's a great album and solid up and down. It's just that he doesn't seem to capture that "lightning in a bottle" that I was looking for in his progression as a recording artist. You can hear his desire to evolve his sound right along with his fear of doing anything too far outside of the box. Now, don't get me wrong, I am not looking for a Ben Harper record from Jack Johnson. I want Jack from Jack. But I can tell that Jack is ready to bring us Jack 2.0, but instead offers us Jack 1.3. Maybe on the next album Jack can harness what is driving him and break on through. Still, overall the disc is solid. Hope, Angel, and If I Had Eyes standout to me on the first few listens. The rest have grown on me. 4 Stars for Jack Johnson fans, less if you are tired of his sound and/or looking for something new.

    Just becaue it's Jack...

Each of Jack Johnson's albums have carried a different underlying themes or attitudes. I have always been able to pick out a few songs that I have been able to strongly relate to(romantic, playful, or moral). Unfortunately, this album has not struck any cords. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed the songs and there are several that will continue to grow on me, but there weren't any that I fell in love with. "All at Once" -I liked very much; almost as good as "Banana Pancakes" from the album- In between dreams. "Angel"- Sweet; parents can relate to. The other songs were nice, but they seemed very similar to previous albums. All in all, this was a good collection of songs, but I wished that he had stretched himself a little more instead of remaking some of his older stuff.

    Awesome Buy!

As do his other albums, Jack's newest cd has many great beats and rhythms, i.e. the great choppy piano background in If I Had Eyes, and as always showcases many different thoughts and emotions. The change of tone from the first to the second track is the perfect way to begin this new great cd, a somewhat 'calm before the storm' progression, from a smooth lax feel in All At Once to a cheerful optimistic attitude in Sleep Through The Static. The cd's layout of tracks is coordinated perfectly to let each song convey a different thought through a different sound. Although the attitude is the same, it is conveyed in new, fun ways that keep my foot tapping along as i drive up to work. The cardboard case shouldn't be a downside to the album, but rather an example of the environmental support Jack gives, as the entire album was recorded solely with solar power. Paper or plastic? Jack chooses the former to both change the world, and help it remain the same!

    His New Best!!!

If you are a fan of Jack Johnson, you will love his newest cd, Sleep Through the Static. The use of more instruments adds a new element to his music, but he retains his easy listening qualities. Sleep Through the Static is mellow and relaxed for every song, and is his best work yet! My new favorite cd. The best songs include the hit single If I Had Eyes, Hope, Angel, Sleep Through the Static, and Go On, but all the songs are amazing. A must buy for any music lover, and especially for Jack Johnson fans!

This is another great CD by JJ. After having a few days to listen to it through many times, I would have to say I like it just like every other one of his CDs. I think that it ranks about the same. There are great songs that I like, and then other ones that I just _like_. By no means bad. But, up to par at least.

    Jack does it again

Jack has done it again. Great sounding tunes with the usual deep lyrics. Some of the songs you'll have to listen to twice in order to figure out the meaning but it is rich and entertaining to say the least. Not as good as some of his previous stuff but a lot better than most everything else out there. Go buy it!

I'm quite a fan of Jack Johnson and I've always enjoyed his music. This is another great CD with great tracks. The only complaint I would have is he hasn't really changed things around or created any of "style" for himself. Not that this is a bad thing.

I really enjoy this cd. If you enjoyed his previous albums chances are you will like this one too. This isn't my favorite of Jack Johnson's cds but is one of the best cds to come out this year. A great buy.

    Solar CD and good music

I have all the Jack Johnson Albums, and this one may be the worst. It doesn't make it a bad cd though! Sleep Through the Static, If I had Eyes, Go On, and Hope are all melodies you could have heard maybe on an earlier album, the rest are ...different. I think this is the best way to describe them. Still good, just not your average Jack Johnson songs. I still highly recommend the album to anyone. Jacks voice is unparalled, as usual, and this cd was recorded totally on analog tape...nothing digital! Not to mention that it was also completley recorded with solar power! Get this album!

This music is so comforting and peaceful. I've struggled trying to find current music the whole family can listen to and this fits the bill. This album makes me want a hammock by a campfire.

really good album, too early to tell if its his best, but its for sure worth picking up, very smooth lyrics and all around good cd. only thing is i wish it had more acoustic less electric music.

The music appeals to everyone and is very relaxing. The melodies flow seamlessly from song to song and you feel more like you are listening to a story being told than you are listening to separate songs. If you love Jack then you will love this.

It was great to hear some new stuff from Jack. His lyrical composition is great as always, and the tracks seem to drift seamlessly from one to another. Definitely an album you'll listen to more than once. Great from start to finish.

    Another Jack Johnson Hit

Jack Johnson is a hit all around. As the middle-aged mother of 2 boys, this is music we can all agree on. Great "beach" music, just to listen to while working at home, or with a housefull of kids. Keep up the great work Jack.

    Good, But Not Great

While there are some great tracks on this album, Sleep Through the Static is not the best Jack Johnson album. I love the laid-back style of Jack Johnson, but this album, at times, feels flat and downbeat. "All at Once", "Sleep Through the Static", and "If I Had Eyes" are vintage Jack, and there a few other highlights, but as a whole, this album is lackluster and does not stand up to Jack Johnson's previous efforts.
