If you like Jack Johnson' s music you will like this album. It is more of the type of music he does best.

I love Jack Johnson. Great CD! Bought it as a replacement for one that I ruined

I will first and foremost like the state for the record that I am a huge Jack Johnson fan. When I first head "Brushfire Fairytales" I was taken with the unique song structure, phrasing, and simple yet infectous song writing. Jack quickly became and still remains one of my top 10 artists. The problem is that Jack wants to grow as an artist - seen here by his inclusion of more electric guitars and instruments - but may have picked a bad time in his life/career to begin such experimentation. The subject matter of "Sleep Through the Static" is heavier fare for Johnson who touches on the war, politics, loss of love and friends - all common themes in a mature and thinking artist's repretoire. What frustrates me most about this disc after about 10 listenings, isn't that Jack doesn't bring the goods - it's a great album and solid up and down. It's just that he doesn't seem to capture that "lightning in a bottle" that I was looking for in his progression as a recording artist. You can hear his desire to evolve his sound right along with his fear of doing anything too far outside of the box. Now, don't get me wrong, I am not looking for a Ben Harper record from Jack Johnson. I want Jack from Jack. But I can tell that Jack is ready to bring us Jack 2.0, but instead offers us Jack 1.3. Maybe on the next album Jack can harness what is driving him and break on through. Still, overall the disc is solid. Hope, Angel, and If I Had Eyes standout to me on the first few listens. The rest have grown on me. 4 Stars for Jack Johnson fans, less if you are tired of his sound and/or looking for something new.
