    Better than we expected receiver!!!

I had some very old Bose speakers and an old receiver. I hooked them up for my son in his dorm room. Not all features worked so we went to BestBuy and checked out the new receivers. We narrowed it down to this receiver and one that cost more. We really liked the higher price one because of the extra features it had on it but decided to go with the cheaper one. OMG, this is the best receiver ever!!! The sound is totally amazing even coming out of very old Bose speakers. All the features work beyond our expectations and set up was extremely easy. I did all of the set up for my son's room including all of the wiring of each speaker, hooking up all of his components and burying all the wires under the carpet and baseboard. The features that we really liked on the higher priced receiver were also on this receiver, it just didn't state it on the box. So glad we chose this receiver!!! My son's dorm room is so awesome and now I also want one of these receivers for my own home!!! Needless to say, I will be buying another one of these receivers and I highly recommend buying this receiver!!!

Quit working one month after I bought it. I followed all instructions on how to reset it up. Nothing was wrong with the initially set up according to the instructions! Now it's just sitting in a box in the back room. What a waste of money...

    Nice Surround Receiver

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

We purchased this receiver after purchasing a Samsung Smart TV. Our old Pioneer surround receiver worked fine but did not have HDMI ports so it was time to upgrade. Connected this to our 1970's era JBL front speakers, a KLH center speaker, Peavey rear speakers and a Yamaha 12" powered sub. Ran the setup program with the included microphone and sat down with a Blu-Ray video to see if this was money well spent. Oh yeah! I am a musician and sound engineer and I was impressed. I'm sure there are better systems out there, but not at this price! Not wanting to change my speakers since they are pretty high quality, this upgrade worked great for me. I do not know how happy I would be with lesser speakers. My only issue is the "Smart" TV is too smart for it's own good. Since there is only one HDMI cable from the receiver to the TV it senses when I change from my DirecTV receiver to my Blu-Ray player and prompts me to setup a new device.

Excellent A/V Receiver For The Price

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I purchased the Sony STR-DH550 a week ago when my Onkyo receiver failed after only 5 years of use. The Sony is an excellent replacement as it was only $150, has great sound quality, has 4 HDMI 4K inputs and 1 HDMI 4K output, has two optical inputs, and does not have features I don't need (such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi). I operate the Sony in stereo mode with two pairs of speakers in two rooms, so the Multi Stereo feature is useful for playing stereo on both pairs. I highly recommend the receiver as it delivers a lot for a low price, but be ready to download the full manual from Sony as the one included has only basic setup information.

Best in Class AV 5.2 HomeTheatre System Receiver!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I paired this Sony 5.2 AV Receiver with Harmon Kardon HKTS16 Home Theatre Speaker System for a surreal, deep, rich sounding home theatre sound system experience just like going to the IMAX theatre! This Sony receiver drives the 120W Harmon Kardon speakers perfectly with the 200W LFE low pass filter to the Subwoofer for an excellent bass surround sound reproduction. You will feel every sound/effect in your programs in Dolby Digital or DTS! Music is even richer sounding. Easy setup is a plus with any computer microphone since mine came opened box without a mic! Within minutes, easy setup completed processing with easy on screen menu, I enjoyed my home theatre system immediately without any annoying additional adjustments! Love the on screen FM menu with pre-set stations. Connectivity is excellent on this receiver leaving nothing to chance and online user manual cam in handy since open box was missing it. Best Buy pricing was excellent and very affordable. Hard to believe this receiver is under $200. Sony exceeded expectations and I highly recommend this Sony AV 5.2 Receiver for any home theatre setup!

Protection defect & totally lacks instructions

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I should have heeded the warnings I saw on this site and others, about this Sony Model and the other models in this series. The unit randomly shuts off and displays "Protection" you have to wait 30 minutes to turn it back on. That might be okay if you are just listening to music. But, a disaster if you are in the middle of a program or movie. I started looking for instructions and trouble shooting. All I could find was instructions for the basic quick start up and connections in the box. I went on-line and found a very confusing system of pull down tabs to canned questions that were totally useless. (Along with a cute little note about if you can't use this function you can buy it printed from a company & they gave you the link.) Great Customer Service, they add insult to injury and want you to buy the Instructions that should have been packed in the box.. Finally, I tried the chat line. A very pleasant man walked me though everything I had already completed on my own and then told me to take the unit back to the store. Overall the sound quality was not that great and controls were very confusing and more so with out a clear description of the functions and uses. Best Buy graciously accepted the return of the Sony Receiver and I exchanged it for a Denon. The sound from the Denon I have found, is much better sounding then the Sony and setup is automated on your TV Screen, also I found even more detailed descriptions, explanations, and instructions are available on-line and can be easily printed out.. They are very precise and informative. Don't waste you time and money on this Sony or others in this series.

There are units that do more, but more is silly. 7.1/2 9.1/2 is a waste. There isn't content that really makes it worth the while. Buy the fancier units if it makes you happy, but you are wasting your money. I've got this unit driving 2 Design Acoustic studio monitor speakers I bought fresh out of college in 1980, a center speaker, 2 polk ceiling mount speakers and a homemade duel voice coil 15" subwoffer with a 200 watt RMS panel amp. I'd put my setup against 2k - 3k systems anywhere

    Good basic Reciever

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this because of the 4hdmi and 2 analog video inputs. The system itself, sounds great, runs well, and is fast responsiveness. Here's the issue I ran into. Two of the video inputs also share HDMI inputs. There seems to be no way to discern the signal from one or the other. The receiver doesn't let you change the input names or reassign the sound side. It works great as a basic receiver but just a warning to anyone else.
