The Good - This unit does lots of things well: color schemes, sound quality, Bluetooth connectivity, Pandora app, CD player speed/quality, a real volume control knob, remote control, real buttons galore, no touch screen (thank you, Sony!), call menu with cellphone contact list, battery power gauge, and more. So the few things below that are poor are kind of nit-picking, but they are still minor flaws. The Bad... Display Brightness. As others have pointed out, the screen is dimly lit, even at the brightest setting. And oddly, the accent lighting is far brighter than the screen. When the sun is shining directly on the screen, it's impossible to read. You have to hold your hand over it to block out the sun, just to read the screen. Luckily this should only be a problem for a small fraction of your driving. No instant access to Volume. This is a common problem that plagues head units even from the high-end manufacturers. While the volume knob on this unit is fantastic and easy to use during normal operation, it doubles as a menu navigator, so when you open any of the menus, you lose the ability to control the volume. Very poor design in this regard. ALL car entertainment devices should have a 100% dedicated volume control knob. No exceptions. It is literally the single most important control on the entire device and is ridiculous that its functionality is replaced half the time. Secondary button labels are not lit. All of the buttons have both a primary and secondary label to describe their functionality in different modes. In the dark, the secondary labels (search, replay, play/pause, etc) are not lit so there's no way to know what the buttons do in most of the source modes, such as CD player, Pandora, BT audio. Bluetooth connectivity wonkiness. This is another problem inherent in Bluetooth technology itself and plagues the entire mobile entertainment industry. On this unit, even with the Bluetooth auto-connect enabled, devices sometimes disconnect or won't auto-connect at all, and I keep having to go back into my devices and re-establish BT connections. This most commonly happens during or after making a BT phone call. It almost always disconnects from the device during or after the call, and it has to be reconnected manually. Unintuitive Menu. This is another common problem in this industry, regardless of how much you spend on the head unit. Because the engineers are trying to shove so many features into the device while simultaneously limiting the number of buttons and knobs, inevitably you'll end up with a device design that requires the user to navigate through a series of deep menus, which are almost impossible to make intuitive. Car Factory OEM devices (except BMW) tend to have far superior interface designs because they are not afraid of adding buttons and knobs to their head units to give drivers instant access to functions. Lots of Display Options, but none of them are very good. Some of the source modes have up to 10 options for display information on the 3-line screen, but none of them are ideal. For instance in the Pandora app, it can display combinations of the station name, artist name, album name, song name, clock, song time, and battery, but there is no option to display the most obviously useful information simultaneously (Artist + song name + clock). The same problem with the FM stations and CD player.
