This handheld gaming device promises portable play, and in one aspect – the screen – it delivers. The display is genuinely impressive: vibrant, sharp, and a pleasure to look at. However, beyond this single positive, the device quickly reveals itself to be a "one trick pony" that can do very little on its own. The core functionality hinges on game streaming, either through the cloud (which requires yet another subscription) or remote play from a home console. This inherent dependency severely limits its versatility. My suspicion is that using it outside my home network will be a frustrating, if not impossible, endeavor, further shackling its portability. The feeling that this device could have been so much more is pervasive. At its current price point, the lack of standalone capabilities feels like a significant oversight. The omission of popular entertainment apps like Twitch, Hulu, and Netflix is baffling. Imagine the added value if you could seamlessly switch between gaming and watching your favorite streams or shows – it would transform this from a niche gadget to a truly compelling portable entertainment hub. Who is this for? Realistically, this device caters to a very specific niche: gamers who absolutely need a way to play their existing library when their main TV is occupied. For anyone else, the limitations and the added cost of subscriptions make it a difficult recommendation. It's a "want" item for the dedicated few, not a "need" for the broader gaming community. Pros: * Excellent, visually appealing screen Cons: * Severely limited standalone functionality * Cloud streaming necessitates an additional subscription * Likely poor or non-existent functionality outside a local network * Feels expensive for what it offers * Notable absence of popular streaming and entertainment apps Overall: This handheld device boasts a lovely screen, but its reliance on external sources and lack of independent features make it feel like a missed opportunity. It's a pricey way to play under specific circumstances, but its potential remains largely untapped. Unless you fall squarely into the "must-have-it" category, you might want to explore more versatile portable gaming options.

I love it but it’s not my type of game. Ps5 have to turn and connect to WiFi to play it not bad. If you don’t like to play it on tv PS portal is best way to go

Its solid has issue when playing higher demading titles because it only works over wifi but plays games like stray and less demanding titles just fine. A little expensive for what it is but all in all not bad

    My honest ps portal review

The days of the psp are dead. Alot of people have to understand that this device may not be for everyone. If you played “Wireless play” on your smart phone or tablet it essentially does the same thing and may not be needed for u. Its not a stand alone device and always needs a ps5 and wifi connection to play. The feel is just like a ps5 controller with a sony tablet built right in between a split Dualsense. Thats literally what the device is. I fine it useful since the connection with the portal compared to my smartphone is way better. Theres less lag and games play better. Its useful to play outside in my yard without being stuck inside to play or bother anyone else. It may not be the answer to nintendos switch but its perfect for a consumer like me

    An excellent snag for $200

First off: unless BB already removed them - ignore the bad reviews from people who don't know what the actual function of a product *specific* review is. These people didn't research the portal and also don't know how release day purchases go for highly in-demand items. A review of a product isn't to complain about availability, its to critique the product itself. Onto the portal itself. It's an amazing add on to the PS5. You could pay $100 for the backbone and use your phone OR pay $200 for a sony product with a large screen and awesome controller connected to it - designed for a single purpose. I'm REALLY enjoying it. For the price, you have to expect corners to be cut. No onboard storage, no streaming/cloud gaming, no local play, etc. I'm betting future updates will only make this thing better.

I know a lot of people got upset when they heard this was streaming device and not an actual console but hear me out... If you already have PlayStation 5 but want to be able to watch TV while gamig this is a great way to do so and it doesn't require super fast speeeds to play and not lag i had both my PlayStation and Portal running on my phone hotspot without any delay, played Fortnite, Sparking Zero, Wo Long, amd Tekken woth no delay or lag. Also this machine runsbmuch smoother than remote play no contest. Now you might be thinking why buy this when the Switch exists. Well ilyl tell you why, both this and the Switch support 1080p 60FPS. But where this triumphs since this streams directly from the PS5 games look great and run great, take Fortnite for example, that game on the switch is awful. On the Portal you get amazing looking quality. Bit I'm rambling, yes its not the hand held people wanted but it does a good job at doing what sony wanted it to do.

Amazing Device for Remote Play Fans

I recently purchased the PlayStation Portal from Best Buy, and it has exceeded my expectations. This device is perfect for anyone who loves gaming on the go or sharing the main TV with family. The setup was simple, and connecting to my PS5 was seamless. The screen quality is fantastic—crisp and vibrant—and the DualSense-like controls feel just like a PS5 controller. It’s also super lightweight, making it comfortable for longer gaming sessions. One thing to note is that it’s meant for Remote Play, so it works best with a strong Wi-Fi connection. It’s not a standalone console, but as long as you understand that, it delivers exactly what it promises. I highly recommend the PlayStation Portal if you’re looking to expand your PS5 gaming experience. Great product and excellent service from Best Buy!
