These earbuds look nicer and are supposed to have some better features, but I haven't figured out why they're supposed to be improved versions yet.

Good at Best for ME

The sound was good, but as I expected, the ANC was not great compared to the Sony WH1000XM4 (Over the Ear) headphones that I have. Finally, I returned these because I could just not get a great fit with any of the provided earbuds. Over time, they seemed to slip out of my ear canals. The earbuds never fell off, but the seal was not consistent. I much prefer the fit of my much cheaper PowerBeats Pro that hook over my ears. The Beats do not have ANC, but maybe I don't need that in my earbuds.

Regarding the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), it is true that the WF1000XM5, being in-ear earbuds, may not provide the same level of ANC as the over-ear WH1000XM4 headphones. Over-ear headphones generally offer better passive noise isolation due to their design, which can enhance the effectiveness of ANC.
We understand that fit and comfort are crucial for an enjoyable listening experience. The fit of earbuds can vary significantly from person to person, and it is unfortunate that the provided ear tips did not offer a secure fit for you.

Excellent sound quality.

However, the app is very complicated to navigate! It has way too many features. The worst part about the the design is the shiny material that they use for the earbuds. It is very slippery when you try to remove them from the case and even harder when you try to remove them from your ears. I really hate that part.

The WF-1000XM5 earbuds feature an improved, glossy texture and more luxurious feel that fit comfortably in your ears while keeping out external sounds. By downsizing the earbud body and optimizing the placement of the components, the earbud is now approximately 25% smaller and 20% lighter than the WF-1000XM4.

Amazing sound quality, issues with ambient control

Out of the box, I've had issues with the ambient sound control, something I really appreciate in public spaces. Concurrent updates to the earbuds seem to have improved the issue, but it is one note worthy of discussing.

Major issues despite decent quality sound

But the technical issues are hard to ignore. The battery for each bud will drain at different rates. The playback cuts out randomly for a second or more sometimes, especially when moving. I had battery issues with the WF 1000XM4’s and got a full refund. When I ran into similar issues with this unit, Sony only offered me a replacement. If you have an iPhone, just get AirPod Pros. I am so disappointed with these that it made me consider returning my WH 1000 XM4s so I can escape Sony’s ecosystem, but I will hold off on that while they still work. For this price point, Sony should have done better.

I've tried a number and these are my favorite.

I tried the Bose and disagree with those who say the ANC is better on Bose. I think the foam earpads add passive NC that puts this above other options including the Google Buds Pro with added foam pads. Sound quality is the best. I get feedback that the mic isnt the best but i live in NYC where noise is everywhere and everyone complains regardless of what earbuds im on.

Great Quality Headphones

Having bought the over ear version about a year ago I was not surprised that they are a great headphone and have really good all around sound. The noise canceling is also really good considering they are not over the ear, something i would have to chaulk up to the foam like padding they have instead of rubber. 100% would recomend this product.

Not for Apple users

Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed.This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I tried several different brands which include Bose, Sony, Apple, Jabra… I was looking forward to the Sony’s, but I felt they fell short. NC auto on/off switching gets a bit annoying (cough, sneeze, yawn, etc. triggers it). Noise cancellation could be better (I feel the iPod Pro’s did a better job). I even switched out the ear tips for some Comfy foam ones (did the same for the iPod Pro’s). Didn’t help. Thought maybe it’s something else, until I took a flight and thought the NC wasn’t turned on (it was). Sound wise, I do enjoy a bit more bass than the Apple’s. A nice part is, I’m able to sleep better with these than the Apple ones. I think the stem hits the pillows. Getting them out of the case is sketchy as it feels like you could drop them (they seem more slippery due to the gloss surface). Pretty slippery when trying to get them out versus the Apple, Bose or Jabra. Changing the volume by clicking 4 times is basically useless. One last thing, you have to ensure the earbuds seat completely in the case, or it won’t charge. So, even though it’s magnetic I still have to add slight pressure until the light starts blinking.
