The sound was good, but as I expected, the ANC was not great compared to the Sony WH1000XM4 (Over the Ear) headphones that I have. Finally, I returned these because I could just not get a great fit with any of the provided earbuds. Over time, they seemed to slip out of my ear canals. The earbuds never fell off, but the seal was not consistent. I much prefer the fit of my much cheaper PowerBeats Pro that hook over my ears. The Beats do not have ANC, but maybe I don't need that in my earbuds.

Regarding the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), it is true that the WF1000XM5, being in-ear earbuds, may not provide the same level of ANC as the over-ear WH1000XM4 headphones. Over-ear headphones generally offer better passive noise isolation due to their design, which can enhance the effectiveness of ANC.

I really dislike using them because they cut out for no discernible reason. It is very very annoying to be enjoying a a piece of music then have it just stop. It happens all the time.

Here are a few steps and recommendations that can help to solve the problem:
1- Try to rotate the earbuds depending on the shape of your ear. Covering the microphone can affect the performance causing audio dropouts.
2- Set the headset to [Prioritize Stable Connection]. You can do this by using the Sony Headphones connect app.
3- If you're enjoying music from your smartphone, the situation may be improved by closing unnecessary apps or restarting your smartphone
4- Turn off the Adaptive Sound Control setting. This can be found on the Sony Headphones Connect app too.

I wasn't sure how they could be better, but the XM5 earbuds are vastly impoved for sound, call clarity and noise cancelling. I used these on a work call in my running diesel and another at a McDonald's with talking and loud music in the background and none of the noise was noticable by others on the calls.

I paid $300 for these earbuds and they constantly have issues. The microphone will randomly stop working or will sound really muffled. The earbud tips fell apart after a couple months. The software to control the earbuds has ads when you open it. The "customizable" touch sensors are not truly customizable. Jabra and SkullCandy do a far better job with their software. The ANC is really good and the overall sound is great but not worth the price. Bottom line: Save you money and get something cheaper.
