Great Sound Quality, Amazing Noise Cancellation
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.The WH-1000XM5 is the latest, flagship over ear wireless headphone from Sony. This headphone has the tough task of improving over its predecessors because they were just that good. Sony has not only given us a flagship quality over ear, wireless headphone once again but genuinely improved a handful of qualities about the headphone as well (albeit with a $50 price increase over the last generation). With better than ever noise cancellation, better microphone array, and a new design, let’s take a look at what the WH-1000XM5 has to offer. I really enjoy Sony’s move towards sustainable packaging. There is no more oversized box with print on it but rather a box just large enough to encompass the contents which made out of recycled materials. Inside, there is more recycled paper products for the small, printed manuals, quick start guides. In the “box”: - Headphones with carrying case (About 20-25% larger than the XM4’s case). - Very Short USB-A to USB-C charging cable - 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable - Warranty Info, Quick Start Material Setup: Turning the headphone on for the first time, my Pixel 6 recognized them without even diving into the Bluetooth menu’s for pairing. I already have the Sony app downloaded which is likely the reason but I was impressed that I didn’t even really have to pair them like in the past. Opening the Sony headphones app nets, you access to the Sony customization tools that help make their headphones so customizable. ANC control, EQ settings, touch sensor controls, 360 Reality Audio settings, etc. I was expecting to see a software update out of the box but so far I haven’t seen one for these but the app allows for future updates as well. The XM5’s support LDAC much like the XM4’s did so my listening has been largely done via my Pixel 6 streaming via Tidal and their Hi-Fi/Master tracks. This allows streaming of audio at up to 990 kbps at 32 bit/96 kHz. Although with my testing and prior experience, the Pixel 6 still has noticeable playback issues at 990 kbps so I used the adaptive setting for the most part. Sound Quality/ANC: The XM5’s has downsized the drivers from 40mm to 30mm from the XM4’s. Sony states this allows for better control which nets a better overall sound. I have to say, the out of the box sound is relatively flat but a perfectly acceptable starting point. To many people, it would sound extremely good minus the lack of bass. The good news is Sony’s app allows you enough EQ control to add that all back if you want. I found adding just a single “tick” of low end made me satisfied although I will continue to refine over time. The ANC had been improved in XM5’s with an added second processor borrowed from the WF-1000XM4’s. This means there is virtually no “hiss” sound when no audio is playing and the ANC is about as good as one would think it could get. It blocks out just about everything! It makes the ANC from other Sony headphone from just 2-3 years ago seem antiquated. My only complaint with sound is the fact the headphone do not appear to get as loud as other Sony headphones I own. I find myself always around the 50% volume for casual, quiet environment listening. In noisier, outdoor, or louder listening in general, find myself pushing the 75% threshold. The good news is they don’t seem to distort much at all at max volume but they seem to top out at 10-20% less output than other Sony’s I have. This may be in part due to the 30mm drivers. Comfort: The XM5’s receives a new design with a new headband design, new ear cup cushions, and a 4-gram lighter weight than the XM4’s. Overall, I am satisfied with comfort however I do have some pressure from the headband over a relatively short time. The ear cups are very comfortable but the headband becomes noticeable after about an hour of wear time. I would rate the comfort very good but not amazing. Features: Like the Sony headphone of recent years, the XM5’s features a touch pad on the right side which is multi-functional. You can use several gestures to control volume, play/pause, skip, voice commands, etc. It works very well and I continue to like the feature to hold your palm over the ear cup for quick interactions with the outside world. Battery: These are rated for 30 hours of listening with ANC on and 40 hours with ANC off. I believe this to be a reasonable estimate for most users. Fast charging is available with an extra adapter. Pros: - Active noise cancellation (One of the best) - Bluetooth 5.2 - Sound quality with app integration/EQ - Color choice (Black and gray) - Sustainable packaging - Fast charging with optional charger - Attractive design Cons: - Increase in price over XM4’s - Don’t fold, Larger (Thin) carrying case - No water resistance - Doesn’t seem to get as loud at max volume Overall, these headphones continue to lead the pack in nearly all areas. Sony continues to improve the product from the last generation. Despite the price increase over the previous generation, I still believe these are a worthy purchase if you are in the market for a premium, wireless, over-ear headphone with some of the best ANC.

Not impressed by the "new"

I had the XM4's headphones these XM5's aren't better or improved, to me. I paid $160 to upgrade and lost features! I prefer the old ear shape, I prefer that when I used to fold them into their case then I could also put them away in purse. The XM5 case to too large for any purse, I can see that it's flatness of the XM5 case may be convenient for a backpack. I expected there to be a GOOD REASON for their "new" shape, but I haven't found it. The stem (or whatever you call the part) that connects the headphone to the headband part seems less sturdy, than the flatter "stem" of the XM4's. **Photographed are my XM2's, but I used the 4's that were still under warantee thinking I was going to get a better product... I didn't get a better product, and with warrantee these set me back over $500. For that I need to be impressed and I'm not.

Not worth it

Ive owned a 85$ of sony headphones pair for 3 years prior to these ones without a problem other than the shedding of material. Disappointed

If you’re seriously considering purchasing a pair, you know the features they boast. I’ll simply touch on the things that stand out and the reasons that made me want them so badly. - The vegan leather earcups are incredibly soft and supple. Combined with how lightweight the headset is overall, I barely notice them even after hours of listening. - Sound quality is great for any genre of music, but if you have preference you can customize the sound profile using the equalizer in the app. - The Headphones Connect app works well. Lots of customizability here. - With two noise canceling processors and eight microphones, the noise canceling is unmatched. - The XM5s can pair to two Bluetooth devices at once using Bluetooth 5.2, which is perfect for people who want to switch seamlessly between a phone and a tablet (or any other device for that matter). - Battery life is fantastic! Sony claims 30 hours on a full charge. The three minute charge time for three hours of playback is accurate and great for people who may neglect to keep their devices topped off. - Speak to chat is novel and super convenient. If you're listening to music and start talking to people nearby, the XM5s will pause your music and switch to ambient sound without the need to hold your hand over the ear cup as was required in the past. Once you’re done speaking, your music resumes, again without any user input. - Sony did a nice job of hiding the capacitive sensors in the ear cups so they are no longer visible, as they were with the XM4s. These enable auto play/ pause when you take the headphones off. Is there anything not to like? As you probably know, the XM5s are expensive. This is definitely a luxury product. You do get what you pay for, though. They’re also not as portable as previous WH-1000 models. The XM5s don’t fold at the hinges so the included case is bigger and less conspicuous. That being said, the case is high quality, protects the headphones well, and has a magnetic insert for storing the charging/ aux cable. Overall, I’m in love with these headphones and will be using them daily for a long, long time.

Foam ear coverings creasing
