The coil whine made this unbearable. It’s a great machine, but for the cost you shouldn’t have to listen to a high pitched noise. If it was just fan noise that would be fine, but this is above and beyond that. So, I had to return it.

I would not recommend buying this laptop. I purchased this 2 years ago for over $1500 and now it will not turn back on due to overheating. Apparently this is a major issue with this laptop.

Two months in, had issues with the screen and high pitch noise, sent it into hp for repair and they sent it back with the high pitch noise still and they bent the bottom assembly when repairing.

I was concerned about the first reviews I saw here, but I gave a chance to this Spectre. I'm totally satisfied!! Maybe I'm just lucky, but the computer works like a charm. This 4K screen is probably the most beautiful I've ever seen on a laptop. Hinge is enough rigid, keeps the screen on the correct position. It's blazing fast! Core i7 with 16gb of RAM and Mvm2 SSD makes it one of the most powerful computers avaliable today. Chassis color is stunning. Battery life about 8-9 hours workinh with Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, some web navigation and regular stuff. This machine is a great surprise!

Fast 8th Gen Intel CPU, but flawed hardware

This is the latest HP x360 that has the Intel 8th Gen processor in it. As such it is compact, powerful, fast, has moderately good battery life, and, while it runs hot at times, the fan noise isn't too intrusive. However, not all is perfect. As the latest Spectre release from HP, it should have come with a rechargeable pen but it didn't. On top of that the pen's activation sensitivity is so low you have to bang it against the screen to get it to register, so it's impractical to use for anything other than drawing or writing. And while I don't expect audiophile sound from a laptop, the audio from the Spectre, despite it being Bang & Olufsen, is about the worst I've heard. The volume is low, the sound is tinny with no bass whatsoever, and the Windows sounds, when they play, sound overmodulated and distorted even at the lowest volume. The previous years model didn't have a microSD card slot. Thankfully HP have correct that. Unfortunately the card doesn't seat fully inside the laptop, and sticks out about a millimetre, which makes it easy to dislodge when you pick the laptop up if you are not careful. So if you can overlook these flaws in an otherwise great laptop, I would recommend this.

This is my second unit, the first one wouldn't boot out of the box. Eventually, I made it work but then immediately developed a hissing sound that I couldn't figure out where it was coming from. I exchanged it the next day but the new one had an issue with the power supply. It worked for a day and then it stopped charging, Called support and they sent me another power supply, Came within a day, all good so far. The laptop is great though, gorgeous screen, fast and just nice to look at it, but I am worried about the quality.

    Spectacular performance, fit and finish

Full disclosure I am not the average user. I bought this to replace my desktop computer. Of particular interest and utility I needed to have Thunderbolt because I also purchased the Omen by HP external GPU enclosure. Over the last few years I have used my desktop less and less, but when I want a full sized keyboard and mouse and my 32inch gaming monitor I have to be able to use it. The great thing about this computer is that I can just plug in one cord and game at 4k and then when I am done I can unplug this and use it on the couch too. 8-10 hours of battery life is great as well and would be better if I went with the FHD display, but 4K was too tempting. I am a fan of the Surface line and was not certain about the finish and details on this computer, but having used it I can say the keyboard, screen, quality and speed of this are top notch. I do wish HP would get with the precision trackpad game, but you can update the drivers yourself with a bit of snooping. Precision is the best and why a company would continue to leverage Window's laptops Achilles(Synaptics) heel is beyond me. I blame HP as Microsoft has precision available. Regardless a minor issue on a really great laptop.

I purchased the first one on 10-31-17 at my local Best Buy. Great guys there! When I got it home and opened it up, I found the right arrow key was a bit wobbly compared to the others. I exchanged it the next day and things have been fine since. So far the machine seems like a great product. I took it recently to Disneyworld, and on the return trip, I was able to watch six episodes of Stranger Things on Netflix with 53% of the battery left when we landed. I would have given one more star if I hadn't had the problem with the first unit.

    Amazing when it works

I purchased this laptop for myself almost exactly a year ago. It is an absolutely amazing machine: super fast, super light, great screen, keyboard feels nice to type on, can handle pretty much anything I throw at it. But as the title says, all of this is only true when it works. I think my laptop must have been a dud, or something funky was going on, given the consistently high reviews this laptop gets. But I figure it is worth it to get this info out anyway: In less than one year, I have now had to send this laptop back to HP for repairs twice for the same issue: system fans not working. The first time, the computer was working great, and then I just got the error and couldn't figure it out. I cleaned the vents with compressed air, updated the BIOS, the whole nine yards. So I sent it to HP, and they sent it back in about a week. When I got it back, both fans were working, but now one fan hardly ever broke 500 rpm, while the other consistently was breaking 2000 RPM. That went on for a couple months, then once again, got the same issue. I sent the laptop in again, and based on HP's website, they just straight up replaced the fan. I get the laptop back today, and will update this review if it ends up not working when I pick it up. If no update, assume good working order. To HP's credit, both times they repaired the laptop for free, and the second time even extended my warranty an additional three months beyond the initial year given the repeated issue. But at the same time, it is REALLY obnoxious to have to go through this twice, especially when this happened to occur on a day I needed my laptop for work, and instead had to type out a pages long legal complaint section on my phone. Sucked pretty hard. If you get one of these that actually works, it is by far one of the best thin and light, 2 in 1 laptops available right now. But I can't readily recommend it, since mine has been such a chore. Food for thought.

    HP quality control is Horrible

I have purchased 4 of the new 8th gen Spectre x360 2-in-1 13.3" laptops so far and all 4 had problems. the first one was the bronze 4K model, the hinges were too lose and every time i typed the screen would wobble. so I returned that one and got another 4K model, I thought everything was great and I was able to was using it for about a week and then all of a sudden the battery would not hold a charge. I talked to customer support and they had me run the power test in the BIOS and it failed, they said I could do a warranty claim, but I just decided to return it to bestbuy since it had only been a week. So then I exchange it for the silver FHD model, as soon as I unbox it I noticed a small dent on the bottom of the laptop, so that one went back before I even powered it on and I exchange it for another silver FHD model. As soon as I start to set this one up, it starts having track pad issues, and looking closely at the track pad i see that one side sits up higher than the other. So this one is going back. I do not believe I am the only one having issues because best buy had a few open box ones available for purchase, that others have returned. I done with HP and will try and find another laptop.

High performance and Strong Features - Good Value

I use this as a developer laptop, often running for a full day on battery doing heavy tasks including local database, Visual Studio and heavy Excel. I replaced an X1 Yoga with this machine so it had big shoes to fill. The equivalently priced 8th Gen i7 Yoga was well over $2000, so this is a worthy consideration. Spec wise it met all my needs - i7 8th Gen (4 core hyper threading yields 8 Processors - critical for Excel.) It has a 16 GB of ram, something I needed in order to support Hyper-V with decent performance. The 512gb SSD is adequate - storage can easily be supplemented with the Micro SD card which stays in place securely. Upgrading to 1gb SSD is the most straight forward upgrade for those with patience and a good screwdrivers. The service manual is readily available which is encouraging. I got mine with the 2 year service plan - seemed reasonable - included one free battery replacement - that part alone is $50. Replacing the 4k screen would be an expensive endeavor so I thought it was worth it. Don't recall if it included Office 365 or if it was just a discount. Port wise, there are two USB-C ports, both of which charge the laptop, and one USB-3 port which is nice. Most laptops that have USB-C lightning connectors omit the legacy USB3 port - I use mine a lot so its nice that no adapter is needed, unless you need more than one device. I don't think its a reasonable expectation for a laptop with this profile (convertible - 2 in one - light weight) to have an ethernet port or video outlet, especially with the highly capable USBC ports and the readily available and mostly affordable port adapters. In my case, a docking station was a worthwhile investment. I chose the Pluggable USB-C Triple Display which is moderately prices at 180 and is fully compatible - I had to turn off the HP's check for "genuine" HP hardware to get rid of the nag screen. I've read about problems with the HP docking stations - at this point they may have fixed them or introduced new models so by all means look into it. The Docking station fully supports additional monitors and external hardware and charges the unit so I s a worthwhile investment. The included Pen, touch screen and windows ink is was a necessary feature for me. The pen works at least as well on the Surface Pro 3, and the larger screen is a mixed blessing - lots of space to draw, but its a little too large to be a convenient tablet like a surface or iPad pro. I often switch back and forth between and iPad Pro in OneNote and the x360. Once at a conference my ipad battery died, but I picked up note taking on the Spectre right where I left off on the iPad via office online. I had some problems with the unit during my first month. Mostly, as factory configured, the drivers did not support the 4k screen very well. Especially problematic was the power management of the graphics processor - I ended up running at a lower resolution, and disabled the power management on the video card. It took about 2 weeks to figure that out as the information in the forums was spotty - lots of people with similar problems - no clear cut solution.

An excellent 2-in-1. I just hit 6 years with this and have loved it. Screen is so crisp and it is powerful enough to run heavy data analysis and more. Had some issues with fans over the years but HP was easy to help replace and cover those under warranty.

First...HUGE props to the Best Buy computer team here in Bend, Oregon. Love, love, love this machine. Fast, amazing display, great keyboard. Only nit picky thing I can say negatively is the touchpad is a bit wonky. Took a bit to get used to. Other than that, I love it.
