As close to perfect as you can get. I had purchased another HP and Lenovo from another store that I had to return because or bad ports. This model and weight works great using at home and to carry while traveling. Really like the size and using as a tablet at home too.

Great laptop but doesn’t last 3 years

I actually bought this laptop 3 years ago (2017) when my son went to high school. It was top of the line then. It was light weight, fast, used as tablet, etc. We had no problem for about 2 1/2 years. When COVID pandemic started in 2020, he was remote schooling for the spring semester. Then in the fall, he went back in person bi-weekly. Even he is in-person school, he had to bring the laptop to school. That’s when the problem started, most just the mic phone or speakers. Since we bought the 3-year extra warranty, we brought to Best Buy to get fixed (covered by warranty). In the last 6 month of coverage, we had to bring back 3-4 times. The bad thing was they had to send to service center to get it fixed and he had to use another cheaper/slower laptop for school. They changed out battery, mother-board, backcover etc. On the last day of the warranty coverage, we brought back to BB again for no sound on the speakers. The service changed out the speakers a couple of times, but still no good. They had the laptop for over a month & half. I had to call to complain every few days. Due to material shortage, BB finally admitted they could fix it at reasonable time & offered me store credit for the original purchase price. So we bought a brand new laptop for a little extra $. So my thoughts are that the laptop is great, but they don’t build tough if you have to carry to work/school everyday, especially with kids. Spend extra $300+ to get the extra warranty!

I have and still use my 15 inch ENVY m6 (i5) and my 13 inch Mac Book Pro, but I’m liking my new HP Spectre X360 better. I purchased it about 3 weeks ago. It is lighter than the Mac Book, has the latest Window features and a touch screen. The tablet mode was just a plus.

I was looking for a compact state of the art laptop that I could power a capable home work station yet could travel with me when necessary. This computer is compact, light and very capable. Very nice screen and if computers can be good looking this one is. The construction is very solid and has the feel of a quality product...Hp has done a good job. At home I have the Hp hooked up to a Startech Thunder bolt 3 docking station, hooked to two 24" video screens and other attachments, it powers them well and have had minimal problems with setup. The only weakness of this machine is the battery, if your a road warrior it's not for you, but if you want a light compact machine that operates occasionally on battery this is it.

I bought one open box and almost immediately returned it. It is very pretty but such a flawed laptop. I think this is one of the worse in its class. Pros: Pretty Light Cons: Fan is obnoxiously loud (even just web browsing), can't even make a conference call because its so loud. Hot - You can not use this on your lap at all Battery life is actually pretty disappointing, probably because the 4k screen but the XPS 13 has one as well but has much better battery life. Also takes a long time to charge for such subpar battery life. Overall I can't recommend anyone getting this laptop, HP needs to fix at least the fan profiles and thermals. Really needs better battery life.

Beware - Random Screen Flickering Issues

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I have switched in January 2018 from Mac (2010 MBP that is still working flowlessly after 8 years of use) to Windows (HP Spectre x360 13" with 4K display, Intel i8, 16GB RAM, 1TB PCIe M2, W10 PRO x64). Since out of the box, my HP laptop's 4K display has been flickering (from bottom half of screen downwards) at random moments. After I removed it from the box and configured it, I showed it to my colleagues. They were amazed, then after 10 minutes of use, the display started to flicker. They all laughed at me and said that I'd better return it and get my money back. I first contacted HP Support who told me to update the display drivers, but this never fixed this random issue. I was hopeful that this issue would have been quickly sorted out. I read multiple HP forum and I noticed that everyone using this laptop , has this same issue and there is still no solution. I keep installing every new Intel display drivers as they get released, hoping to get this flickering issue fixed, but so far no luck. I tried all suggestions from web forums, but none solved this flickering issue. BTW, switching to 30Hz is not a solution for someone who purchased a laptop with a 60Hz 4K display. HP has yet to acknowledge there is a real issue that needs to be addressed. It's disappointing from a company like HP. I've had my Laptop for 5 months now. I like it, but this display flickering issue is frustrating, as I can't predict when the flickering is going to happen. I should have returned this laptop on day one. I purchased this laptop with the hope that I could consolidate with an ultra portable computer for both home and work. This definitely allowed me to do that. I am used to a 15” laptop but with the 4K screen the viewing is even better than my large computer. I have no issue with heat or fan noise mentioned by others. I am a techy gadget girl and have owned a ton of laptops. This one beats them all by a mile! I can’t recommend it enough. I paired this with a great docking station I also purchased at Best Buy by IoGear and run dual displays at work needed for spreadsheets and data. You won’t go wrong with this purchase!

I was looking for computers for a while and last minute chose this laptop. I am really amazed with it. It is incredibly fast, the RAM size and processor help run exactly what I need and more. Additionally, I can game on it which was something I was not really looking for but I am happy it does. It has an incredible resolution and I love it. The only two things I am not too happy with is that there is only 1 usb port and it does get a little hot, but not to the point where I am really worried about it.

Very happy with the SPECTRE. I use a MacBook Pro 13in for work and it all depends on what your needs are.(they are both great machines) Love the fact that it's touch screen, converts to a tablet, the usage of the pen, I feel like there's so much you can do with this thing! . Personally I like the keyboard on this better than the MacBook. (personal preference again). If you're on the fence with buying it, pop into the store and play around with it :-)

    BYE BYE MACBOOK PRO

So for the last decade or more I've been a mac enthusiast , I own an iMac , 2 ipads (pro, MacBook pro, apple watch, and the iPhone x and this last time around I spend 2 months debating the pro's and con's of what I should choose when it comes to a computer and I literally got a headache on several occasions but I certainly do not regret my decision. I decided to go with the HP SPECTRE and haven't looked back yet. This computer has a very sleek design, it's impeccably built and well thought out. it's got a 4K (TRUE 4K) not native 4k display.. the blacks are dark black almost inky looking. when I go to star this computer from a cold dead start it boots up so freaking fast it's freaky! The processing speed is light years ahead over any thing else that I've used. It's got way more capabilities than the Mac OS. Mac OS tries to lock you into one type of thinking but PC will give you the flexibility to venture out and ever since STEVE JOBS died its' like APPLE cannot come up with any fresh new ideas and this was the primary reason I decided to switch. I'm glad I did. This computer is awesome. Quite expensive but if you compare the specs you will see that it's a no brainer.

    Awesome Machine

    I. Love. This. 2-in-1. I needed a replacement for my Surface (which lived six years). While I loved the Surface, I didn't love that I was compromising on space in order to keep the price affordable. This Spectre is a fantastic replacement. In fact, I'd say it outdoes the Surface on many levels. For the price of a lower-end Surface, I was able to get 4K display, 16 GB of memory, and 512 GB hard drive space. Plus, I don't have to deal with that awful kickstand the Microsoft has yet to figure out that no one likes. The speed of this hard drive is amazing. The quality of the display is unexpectedly great. While it does heat up, I've not noticed it being overly hot as some reviews have mentioned. The keyboard is intuitive, and the keys are backlit, which makes it easy to type in a room without turning on lights. The compromises here are minor. The keyboard doesn't detach. Know what? I don't have to pay extra for it, either. I'm good with that. Okay, one compromise. HP supplies both a touch pen and a cushioned carrying sleeve. What's not to love?

Solid alternative to newest surface pro.

Cost is less than 2/3 of what you'd pay for a similarly spec'd surface pro and you get a pair of Thunderbird 3 ports along with a normal USB3 port, so you've got a lot of flexibility including output to either a Thunderbird 3 dock, or any of a slew of dongles for ethernet, external video card, drives, etc. Oh, there is no place to put the pen. This model came with a 2048 level pressure sensitive pen, but it can also can use the newest surface pro pen which is 4096 levels plus tilt sensing. I decided to go with that instead of the HP Tilt pen, just remember to download the tilt driver from HP. While I have no way of measuring the pressure levels, I tried it in both KRITA and MEDIBANG PAINT PRO and it appears to be functioning properly so I'm very happy. Solid alternative to the newest surface pro. Sure it's heavier but it's got a keyboard attached and they include a serviceable pen, though you'll likely want to spring for either the HP Tilt pen or the new Microsoft Surface pen. If you go for any other pens remember that this uses N-Trig, not EMR or AES.

Would have been great - except screen flicker

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this a week ago. It was on sale and I have been interested this model for a while. Overall the reviews looked good so I got it. At first it was awesome. The 4K screen really makes everything look so crisp. Text and fonts are so clean and easy to read. Also being 4k it seemed to have brighter and more vivid colors. Processor is fast and hard drive is really fast. Touch screen is very fluid and smooth. The pen is ok but not as precise as I was hoping. Also seems to take some pressure to get it register a click or to draw. Finger print reader worked but not all that well - took multiple tries. Also one other tidbit - it doesn't take much to get the fan to kick in (general browsing and videos don't but strangely viewing pictures does). When the fan does kick in - it is a bit noisy. But now the bad: After about a week the screen developed a flicker. Didn't have all the time but when it did the screen would become unreadable for a few seconds and come back and would continue to do this till you rebooted it. Then it would be good for a while and then it would come back. I found extensive forums out there reporting this issue and that it may even be an Intel Chipset issue with the 620 video card and 4k screen. Other brands also seem to be affected like Lenovo Yoga and Surface Pro 4 (but not the 5). I tried all of the recommended updates but still came back. Even opened a case with HP. They said if the driver updates don't fix it - then it is a hardware problem. Since it was within my 2 week window, I went ahead and returned it. So much promise but fell short on a hardware flaw with the screen/video card.

    Quality issues

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

These days and age, it's not acceptable to buy a premium product with quality issues. I don't remember the last time I bought any gadgets with problems out of the box, much less a premium one. Here are the issues with mine. 1) The hinges are so loose that I have to place it down or pick it up very gingerly. Otherwise, the screen will move back or even go flat out. My one year old Dell XPS, my four year old Dell and my four year old Yoga Pro 2 have steadier hinges than this. 2) The mic did not work. After a BIOS update, it got better but still not as good as my 3 other PCs mentioned above when using Cortana. 3) Every time I play a video, the right speaker will work for about 20 seconds. Then the volume dropped off to only about 10%. 4) This machine can get hot causing the fan to comes on frequently, Once it comes on, it doesn't know how to stop, even when I leave the machine alone and making sure that no apps are running (from the task manager). 5. This may not be a quality issues but the battery life is grossly misrepresented. I've tested with just light to moderate web browsing with no other pesky bloatware running and it lasted at most 4.5 to 5 hours. This HP laptop is no where near as good as compared to my Dell XPS and Lenovo Yoga, the other 2 major premium products. In my experience, not even close. Disclaimer: I do not work for Dell or Lenovo nor do I have any vested interests in these companies. Just putting out my experience here.

    Disappointing and Poor QC

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I've been researching laptops in the 13-14" screen range for some time. After much time spent online reading/watching reviews and playing with various devices in different stores, I decided to give this laptop a try. I'm not unfamiliar with HP quality control issues. Though I've never owned an HP product (for the QC reasons), I decided it was worth trying this one to see for myself. Out of the box, like any new device, this laptop looks pleasing, especially in the Silver Ash colour with rose gold accent. The keyboard is just ok, not that great, especially compared to my 3-year old Toshiba laptop that is a dream to type on. To be honest, the keyboard on the Spectre x360 feels cheap and plastic-y. However, I thought it's more lightweight and I'll learn to adjust. The screen looks nice, connectivity seemed fine - though there is only wireless, no ethernet connection port, unless you buy an external dongle/adapter. In fact, you will likely end up buying several adapter, but more on that later. Windows 10 is annoying. It also auto-updates, but there's a way to turn that off in the Administrative Tools, just search for it online. Sound on the Bang and Olufsen is alright, too. Nothing great, just decent. I mostly use a headset anyway, so not a major deal-breaker. But now to the quality control issue. I didn't have any problems with hinges, like others have had. I didn't have issues with the a/c power cord (I've only had it 2 days...), and I didn't have overheating issues with normal usage and streaming short videos on Netflix. These are the most common problems I've read about on this laptop. What I did have an issue with was the keyboard, on several levels. For one, the spacebar seems to have a sharp, pointy center, like something that's part of the plastic of the keyboard and that pokes me in the finger whenever I type on it. It feels like an extra bit of plastic is sticking up smack in the middle of the keyboard. I tried to remove it with my nails, but no...it's just part of the plastic. Kind of shocking. This is not a $300 throwaway device, or it's not supposed to be. I reached out to HP. Terrible, slow customer "care" who would takes AGES to reply to a simple question, or even comprehend my simple question. Pus they just told me to take it back to Best Buy - uh, thanks?? They further added (upon my asking more detailed question) that no single key can be replaced on a Spectre x360 keyboard, it needs to be replaced as a whole, so it'll be costly and can mess with the build of the laptop. Well done on that, HP. Most annoying issue to me? The backlit keyboard. Might as well not even have backlit. You press F5 to make it come on, but even in the darkest room, it's not bright enough to stand out, and in fact, the brightness of the screen overpowers it. There is no way to increase the brightness of the backlit keys - yes, I researched it at length. So you get a backlit keyboard in theory but, in practice, it's not backlit enough so that you can see the keys clearly and work on them in a pitch-black room. No good for me. That was the final straw for me. I decided to return the latop and hit "reset/wipe" to original factory setting. Important to note that I only set up the basics of this laptop to test it out before committing to it, was on it a total of 2 hours. But 47 minutes after I've hit the "factory reset/wipe" option, it's still sitting at 54% trying to reset it to factory settings. Why? I didn't download anything, move files, nothing. Strange...? In summary: Is this a fast computer? In some sense. Nice looking? Yes it's pretty and shiny. Lightweight? Sure, but you'll have to buy several adapters to get important (to me, to most business people) specs you want on a laptop: USB (not just USB C), ethernet port, etc.). Lots of specs? Ehh. Memory is also only at 512 GB, sold state. My 3 years old laptop came with 1 TB and for less than what I paid for this plastic toy. Obviously, the benchmark here is my older laptop that should pale in comparison to a nifty, new, pricey gadget like this one, but it actually surpasses it in many ways, which makes spending this kind of money impractical. No, would not recommend this. Question is, which brand to try out next? Options are limited for this size range and prices, ridiculous.

For starters, I am moving from a MacBook Air as my daily laptop, that has served me well for the last 2 years. I started looking for a replacement for 2 reasons; more storage and a higher resolution screen. After determining that Apple wants over $2000 for that configuration, I started shopping Windows machines. With that preface, let me say that this machine is about as perfect a replacement as I could find. The Pros: Unbelievably thin, made of Metal, Awesome screen, 8th Gen 17, 16G, 512G, 4K touchscreen, great sound and a USB Type A socket! The Cons: Trackpad is good, but not in comparison to the MacBook, Keyboard is a bit mushy and the biggest negative is that it gets hot. The fan runs and it gets too hot to rest on your lap. If you're looking for a premium laptop with power to run most any app, this is it. Just don't be surprised when it heats up under heavy use.
