A Gem with some minor flaws
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Right from the unboxing, this pc presented me with a number of surprises. The outer box was better than average, but that opened into an inner presentation box worthy of a luxury gift. Lifting the unit out, I took a few moments to admire the bronzed diamond cut perimeter, at which point I noticed the nicely done fabric slipcase included. Impressive. All that means nothing if the unit doesn't work, right? If you're here, you've read all the specs. It doesn't get much better. If 16 gig of ram plus another 2 dedicated video doesn't do it for you, you better start looking for a desktop. Setup was a snap, signed into Microsoft, connected to wifi, a few updates and we were up and running in probably under 10 minutes. Downloaded Firefox, Chrome, synced folders, and setup email in another 10. Less than a half hour all told and we were set to go. I spent the bulk of the next few hours with the 360 checking to make sure all my apps and drivers were working and current. That, along with a good amount of browsing, Youtube, & Netflix. Having read reviews of previous models of the Spectre, I was concerned about heat generation, especially since this model is loaded for bear under the hood. Lifting the unit up and feeling along the bottom, I saw no cause for concern - it was comfortably warm, but nowhere near what I would classify as hot. Then I downloaded Steam, and fired up a round of my favorite game, Civilization 6. That's when things got a little more interesting. I heard the fans. I felt the heat coming out the sides. The fans fire out downward on both sides, and I could feel the warmth on my arm. They have an unusual noise, I'd say something like speaker hum, white noise, and a slight whine combined. If you're pushing the unit, it's definitely audible. Here's my concern - if the fans are pushing out heat, they're doing their job - but for how long? My prior Asus laptop had a reminder that came up after a set amount of running time - "It's time to clean your fans." And that was a fairly simple task to accomplish. I looked both on the web and on the HP site for directions, and was not impressed with the results. Beyond removing 6 torx screws for the cover, it then got into disconnecting the fan power plugs to the motherboard, gently removing mylar tape, etc. I've had the unhappy experience of snapping motherboard connectors, so this is not what I wanted to hear. I've had over 25 years experience playing with PC's, and I've had to clean fans on every one of them - if not every 6 months, at least once a year. Product of an urban environment - there's dust all over, and PC's are dust magnets. So if this thing is pushing out prodigious amounts of heat, it's going to require maintenance. They should have made this task easier to accomplish. One other thing I noticed in this area was the Windows Power Options. I generally don't use a laptop on battery power, so I habitually set the power options for performance. I didn't see that option in the menu. The highest setting is "Balanced." This sort of tells you that they don't want you pushing it into overheating. I also noticed the Start Menu doesn't include an option for sleep, which if my preferred setting. Only hibernate is there. Now onto my personal pet peeve - the touchpad - or "clickpad" as they now term it. I just couldn't get comfortable with it. I went through all the Windows Ink & touchpad settings, which were minimal. Normally, if you go to the device manager, and navigate to mouse/touchpad settings, you can get to additional options for control. Not here. All you're presented with is "Synaptics touch pad", with no options to select. It took me some time to determine that the only way to see additional settings is to go to the apps menu and open the Synaptics app. Why? I proceeded to adjust the options, but I couldn't seem to get the touch right. It was either unresponsive, or too responsive, especially when you set the scroll to glide. Going to the touch screen, it was no problem - a flick of my finger and things would work as I would expect them to work. It's a very good touch screen, by the way. And the included active pen also works nicely. I tried going to HP to check drivers. I downloaded the Click Pad driver and installed it, but that didn't change things. I don't believe this is a defective touchpad, just a bad implementation of the driver. Here's the mistake HP made - they should've installed the Microsoft Precision Touchpad driver which would work with the Synaptics pad. I see on the web there are directions to change over to this driver, which I will try in short order. One more quirk about the touchpad - excuse me, Click Pad. There are certain things it just ignores. Imagine you're on Amazon. On the right side top of the item page, there's the price. Next to the price there's a link to "free shipping." I can click on that fine. For some items, there's a small link below it that says "details." I can't click on that link. It just ignores it like it wasn't there. I go above it, below it, to the side of it, no go. I go to any other machine in the house, the link works. I don't understand it. Another thing that seemed half baked was the Bang & Olufsun mixer. I don't know what they were thinking, but the settings were horrible. Most of the fixed settings cut the sound volume in half. If you're watching a youtube clip, video, or movie with low volume it'll become inaudible. The only setting that seemed to work decently was "club." I turned it off and used the standard mixer. I know I've been nitpicking things for what is actually a pretty remarkable machine. I have a Fios Gigabit connection, and the Spectre is lightning fast. The touchscreen/pen combination is excellent. What I'm bellyaching about are just bad drivers. I'm not going to kill my rating of the excellent hardware for something I believe can be fixed. The first thing I'm going to do is cure the touchpad problem if i have to force a driver down it's throat. Personally, I want my Asus Synaptics driver back that had the momentum feature. I believe I'm actually going to be happy with the Spectre once I sort through these options. It's like a Ferrari in need of a minor tuneup. It's too beautiful a piece of work to be dismissed. I'll give it some love...

Wouldn't bother with it and would return it if I c
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.15 day return policy is a joke - especially for an 1800.00 computer. Right off the bat I noticed an unusually noisy whining noise from the fan when its running. Spent hours loading the software for my apps then went out of town for 2 weeks and then was told too late to return or exchange it. Also, the HP assistant that helps to update the software doesnt work properly - I had numerous updates to install per the HP app., and when I tried to install the updates the program won't install the updates then asks me if they are installed?!?? How would I know? HP had me uninstall the assistant then install a new one - same problem and had uninstall and reinstall a 3rd time. Next, the system downloaded a windows update and when the HP assistant ran again it said I had updates for the hp software. But when I tried to run the updates they said they weren't compatible with windows that I had the wrong version of windows. Had to call HP again and was told that theres a glitch and that the hp software did not recognize that I had a new version of windows..... FINALLY..... The battery won't charge to 100%. Have gone back and forth with hp and now I have to wipe the computer and send it in bc all the trouble shooting and program updating and testing and reflashing of the BIOS haven't helped.

Powerhouse convertible!!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The HP Spectre X360 is an amazing laptop. But its much more than that as well. With top of the line specs and features you get incredible performance in return. As far as specs Ill briefly list the highlights. 8th gen Intel i7-8556U 1.8ghz processor, 16gb of DDR4 ram, a 512gb Solid State Drive, Windows 10, Nvidia Geforce graphics, Bang and Olufsen speakers, and an Ultra HD IPS LED multi-touch display. The laptop itself has an amazing build. Its super thin, lightweight, and screams class. The convertible design of course allows for using it not only as a laptop but as a tablet, or in table top mode. Its so nice to only need one device to be able to basically do all you would need from a PC/ tablet. The UHD screen is top notch with super crisp image, great color, and is a joy to consume media such as Netflix, watching movies, or playing games, etc. You never really think you need Ultra HD until you have seen it. Then there is really no going back. The touchscreen is very responsive and accurate. In tablet mode it works better than any tablet I have ever used or had. Performance is where it really shines. With the i7, 16gb of ram, and a 512 SSD its super fast. Boots up in seconds, and as before you really dont think you need an SSD over a traditional hard drive until you have experienced a high performance SSD. Opening multiple programs, as many tabs as youll ever need, and it doesnt even studder let alone crash or delay. The audio from the Bang and Olufsen speakers is great, and not what you would normally think laptop speakers would sound like. The have just enough kick, with a rich sound that can be turned up more than Ill ever need with no distortion at all. Watching movies, or playing music the sound is perfect. B&O sound is amazing. Battery life has been great as well. With my old traditional laptop I was lucky to get 3 hours before Im running around looking for somewhere to plug in. Not so here. Easily go twice that and more. Of course this depends on usage. But for the average user you'll get several hours. Wi-fi and Bluetooth connectivity works perfect as well. No issues at all connecting to my home network, or connecting other BT devices. No signal drops no matter where in the house. Average speeds of 180mb/s, which is blazing fast in comparison to my other devices. But again this depends on your router, internet provider, etc. But that is plenty fast for anything I needed to accomplish. And one of my favorite features in the built in fingerprint reader. I hate log ins, trying to remember all your passwords, etc. Well that is easily avoided here. After set up the fingerprint reader is quick and even more important accurate. This tech has come a long way from when it would always say it couldnt read, etc. It works fast, and everytime. No more worrying about what I recently changed my password to. Love this feature. I said it in the title and Ill say it again. This is one powerhouse of a convertible. Blazing fast, top notch specs, beautiful yet solid build, with no need to upgrade anything. Its the best laptop, tablet, and PC Ive ever had. Couldnt recommend it more!
