Its a great way to relax.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This game for me offers two things, one is beautiful visuals, and a very relaxing experience. the game isnt too engaging, it definitly feel like a launch title thats showing off what the 3ds can do. It is surprising relaxing. I dont really play puzzle games or anything that puts me into a state of relaxing, I play games where I need to go for the kill! but this is a very nice change of pace. its very soothing. very nice looking and for the price your paying pretty awsome. If this is a game your gonna get as one of your first 3ds games cuz its cheap then id say your not wasting your money. but there are a ton of titles id rather be playing than this, not my kind of game but id still recommend it if your just picking up a 3ds and looking to spend as little as possible.

Great for what it is
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.this game is fun. it's not a big hit or a big game, but it's fun. It's an interesting slow-paced strategy game where you can choose 1 of 3 submarines (each having different stats and ways to fire weapons) to go thru 8 missions. the missions are challenging and are fun to play over and over again. there are many decals to collect/earn that give your subs perks. besides missions, there's also time trials, periscope mode, and multiplayer. Periscope Mode comes up after every mission. using the system's gyroscope, you turn your body around to scan for an enemy sub to shoot. it's far away so you have to time your missel right. If you enjoy chess and battleship, then you'll enjoy multiplayer, cuz that's what it basically is. over all, i highly enjoyed this game at launch. it's not a big title, but for what it is, i highly enjoyed my time with it.

Pretty much just a tech demo for the 3DS
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When the 3DS launched, Steel Diver was one of the Nintendo-published titles aimed at showing off the features of the system- namely the 3D and the accelerometer- and this made it pretty much a glorified tech demo for the system, but with a $40 price tag. At the $40 price, this game is a must-avoid. There's really not much there. However, at some of the cheaper prices it's been available at- I personally got it for $5 from Best Buy- it's a much easier buy. The gameplay is basically a few missions where you pilot the submarine through the seas and there's a few enemy ships to destroy, but that's the highlight of the story line. There's a periscope mode where you use the 3DS's accelerometer which is pretty good use of the system's technology. Aside from that, there's not much in the way of good reasons to buy this game, especially at full price. Aside from it showcasing the 3DS's technology I'd probably avoid this game.

Fun & enjoying
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I picked up this title because of reviews saying it was fun and they weren't wrong. Steel Diver sets you out on fun short missions while maneuvering submarines. The gyroscope technology adds the cherry on top of the cake and makes it more of an immersive experience. Check out the DLC too if you want to have a bit more of a longer gameplay experience. Def recommend this to anyone especially because of its price as well. Nintendo always with their creative ways always with their goal of innovating.

Unbeatable for $2.99
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For $20 it's not worth it. But for $5 - $10 it's worth getting. Today it's on the deal of the day for $2.99 So it should be a no brainer. The gameplay is fun- trying to maneuver the sub quickly through the levels. The story is a little lacking but it was intended as a tech demo of the original DS screens and finally got turned into a game on the 3DS.

It's fun.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I grabbed it thinking the periscope game would replace or reduce the young boy's obsession with the now very annoying face raiders game. He liked the 2d 2-player strategy game better. It is fun, but the stylus only controls make it a bit harder than it needs to be in the side scrolling game. You cannot change the ballast or steer and shoot at the same time. Sounds are fun. "Dive", "Full speed ahead", and now the boy shouts "May Day".

An interesting change of pace
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. We all know launch titles get some of the harshest criticism out there, but I had the good fortune of getting this game well past launch (and on sale for $5) It isn't a face paced, edge of your seat, twitchy shooter/racer/whatever. This game is primarily strategy, and lots of minor course adjustments (as hitting a concrete wall at top speed surrounded by mines makes for a bad day) The gameplay is refreshing, in that while it takes time for your commands to translate to action (as it generally is in life) you can still plan out the next act, and get to watch the rather nice visuals while everything is happening. The tutorial gives you a good overview as to how everything works, the controls are quite easy to get a feel for, and the time trials allow for a challenge where you can fine tune your gameplay in a set setting (and beating the developer ghosts' times is fun too) Its true there's only a handfull of levels in each mode, but going through with each sub, and going for the various unlocks adds to the game-time. I enjoy it, and I got an absurd deal on it (I'd have gladly paid 20-25 for it, but 40 is a bit steep) it makes use of a number of the extra little functions they packed into the 3DS (like the gyro) and, while short, it's polished, and doesn't feel like it was rushed out.

The game is not appealing to play, at first.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought the game for my daughter, at a great Best Buy price. It was a new release and the cover was appealing. However, my daughter (7) opened it last of all her other games (weeks later). She did not like it, at first. But, she later commented," it was pretty cool". She said, " it makes her feel like she is really in the water-". She likes blasting the ships. Good graphics, fairly challenging and anyone can play it- the challenge is short-lived. I would not pay $40 for it. If it can be purchased discounted or used it is a good game for your 3 D S collection.

It's a launch title and a new IP from Nintendo
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This game was a launch title and a new IP from Nintendo. This reminds me of the first NES launch line up, not a lot of games but memorable ones at that. This game reminds me of Excitebike just something you play from time to time, it will never replace a Mario title but makes great for a time killer in between Mario play sessions. With that said the reality of Android and Apple Mobile games; this game feels like one of those. That's a good thing and a bad thing. The bad being that those games cost .99 - 2.99 and this game was 39.99 at launch and now 19.99. The price is not worth the experience you can get from a premium mobile game. But I did get this game on sale for 2.99 so that is why I got to give it 4 stars, now if I paid 19.99 then it would fall to 1. You got to give Nintendo some props for trying a new IP that does not come close to being a Mario, DK, Zelda, or Metroid clone. If you can get it for less than 5 get it, it is worth the price and is fun like a mobile game. Just don't pay full price or you will feel ripped off.

It's a fair game, but way too short.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the one and only game I purchased with my 3DS. The gameplay is fair, but there is just not enough of it. I finished about all the game has to offer in less than a week. The controls are difficult to master (It's realistic, as you are operating a submarine), but it is frequently frustrating. This is an OK game when compared to the other launch titles available, but if you are reading this and it is past July 2011, there are definitely other titles worth spending on, and I think it is ridiculous that they are selling this at full price, for a game with little gameplay.

Unique game play under the sea!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.SteelDiver is a game that gets a rough, and unfair label of simply being a tech demo; despite it's origins not being far from this. This game is a great, and unique new Nintendo property! You pilot a submarine via levers and steering wheel on touch screen as you travel through the depths to accomplish missions. Another great mode is the Periscope Strike mode, which takes advantage of the accelerometer in the 3DS; to get the most of this mode, break out a wheeled desk chair, and be prepared to immerse yourself! The last mode, feels a lot like the classic board game battleship. You take turns moving pieces, and trying to attack your opponent under fog of war. As a whole, for the right price, this game is a worthy purchase.

Very underrated
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. One of the first Nintendo 3DS games, "Steel Diver" certainly wasn't the best launch title for the console, but that doesn't mean it's a bad game. Actually, when you wrap your head around the concept (navigating a submarine through an underwater course) and its glasses-free 3D presentation, it's surprisingly good. The overall story is pretty boilerplate, but also not required ... a fictional nation is getting aggressive, so the world's powers establish an elite force of submarines to combat the threat. The submarines are essentially how the game sets difficulty; you can choose a small, easy-to-navigate sub, or a larger-but-faster sub, or a very large and thus tricky-to-pilot sub. Your main goal is to complete the game's seven courses within a given time limit; that's not many, but if we're being generous, we'd say there's 21 levels (completing each of the 7 levels with all 3 subs). If you add on the various mini-games (such as using the 3DS as a periscope and a Battleship-like strategy game), it fleshes out the package a bit more. The game received a lot of knocks for its controls. Yes it's challenging to control pitch angle, speed and rate of ascent/descent, but then again that's the point. Submarines can't start and stop on a dime, nor can they ascend with a mere flick of a directional pad ... such maneuvers take time, forcing players to plan their movements in advance. The glasses-free 3D graphics are definitely the game's strongest suit, and even compared against newer titles, "Steel Diver" looks pretty good. The audio isn't anything to write home about, but it's more than serviceable for this game. If the earlier media reviews scared you off, it's time to give "Steel Diver" a second chance.

Really fun game Nintendo!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This game is really fun and entertaining. I really like the challenge of controlling something new. This game is a break from Super Mario Brothers. Thank you Nintendo for a relaxing and entertaining. Thank you Best Buy for selling this masterpiece for 5 dollars. With this game, there's no solving puzzles or have to worry about unnecessary violence. All you do is blow up things. One thing I about like this game is. That the touch screen is a big part of the action. Don't be close minded and try this great masterpiece.

Good looking game...
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A good title to keep in the system for a quick battle on the go. It still looks good and is still being carried by Best Buy (the last time I checked), surprising since its a launch title. I would recommend it .

Enjoyable enough
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. For a 3DS early release title, this game isn't too bad. The graphics aren't the quality of 3DS titles that have come out recently, but I enjoyed the gameplay of this game.
