    A gem for the money!

This little (and cheap) Sylvania unit is a gem for the money. I was initially concerned about the price; if it had cost say $69 instead of $19.95 I wouldn't have given it a second thought. But it sets up right away and works like a charm. Only small drawback is the remote labels are too small to read, but I just made up a master chart from the instruction book and everything is fine. I would give this little guy 6 stars if that were possible (I mean, for the money, it's basically free.) STRONGLY recommended!

A Great Player to Travel With

    Posted .

This is a great little player to travel with. Previously I have used a Sylvania portable DVD player but had difficulty connecting to the hotel TVs- usually some brand called Sceptre. But this unit uses HDMI connections (cable not included, but they're real cheap) and this a far simpler interface with the TV. It is very portable, you could probably fit into a typical suitcase of a carry on or check-in size. (Even in the factory packaging). If you travel only occasionally this is the player to bring with you. It also comes with a very complete remote control but the front controls are easy to get used to.

No as good as I'd hoped

I was excited to view many DVDs I hadn't watched in a while, as well as some news ones given to me. The new ones played fine, but anything older than a couple of years old was unwatchable. Such a sensitive instrument! The remote is very fiddly, with all those teeny buttons! Some of them are quite absurd. Press zoom and you get zoomx2, zoomx3, zoomx4-- and the word zoom never goes away. What's that for I wonder... Another big issue! There doesn't seem to be any way to make the image fit the size my TV screen. It's in the same ratio, but much smaller and who wants that! All in all, I am less than delighted.

    Not impressed

I bought this as my local Best Buy. It was easy to hook up. The first time I used it, there were brief periods (about 1 second) where the screen would go black while watching a DVD then resume playing. There were other times where the playback would freeze for less than a second then resume playing. It was often enough to be annoying. I used the DVD player on my laptop hooked to my TV with the same HDMI cable which played fine so I have to think it was the DVD player. I returned this and got a different brand which works great.

    Absolutely useless

If I could give this zero stars, I would. The very first DVD I tried to play worked for about two thirds of the movie, but close to the end, it skipped. That by itself is not a big deal (of course, DVDs scratch sometimes). But, instead of skipping, it locked completely up. No chapter skip, fast forward, or even getting back to the menu would work. It just made horrible spinning and grinding noises. So, I gave up on that particular DVD and tried a second one. My second attempt was a two-episode thing. I made it to the end of Episode One, and was waiting for it to go on to the next episode, as I had done dozens of times before with this favorite DVD. It never did. I could hear the disc spinning and grinding in the player just like the first one, and it never continued. All I could see was a black screen after the credits had played through. Eventually, it let me get back to the menu. When I tried to select "play episode two" instead of my previous choice of "play all," once again, the DVD would not play at all. I got more spinning and grinding noises, and a pixelated menu for my trouble. Neither of these DVDs were damaged beyond repair; both of them will play on another player. One DVD messing up is one thing; a coincidence. Two in a row only one day after getting the device out of its box is a defective DVD player. In addition, the return policy for Best Buy is horrific. After trying to click on the return button, and confirming my stupid email, I got an error message saying that my return could not be processed online. That I have to go to a store. Thanks to that, the next time I need anything electronic, I'm definitely not coming to Best Buy, either in person or online.

    Cheap, unreliable & problematic

    Posted .

This is one of those things where you must use it more often before you review it. I don't know where to start. Don't have a lot of time. This DVD player is so unreliable, you can't even test a disc with it. You don't know if the disc is has an error or the player is the problem. When playing a dark scene or during black background credits, there are tiny little white specs all over the place. The remote responds very poorly; often requiring numerous button presses before responding. If you press GOTO to check on time remaining of a movie, you get one free success. If you check a second time later on, the GOTO screen stays on forevermore and will not go off. You have to eject the disc and start over [or watch the time display for the whole rest of the movie. This player has little or no memory programming at all. If you take a bathroom break, you'd better be back in 5 minutes or so. Otherwise, you must start over. That's all the time I have. T'care, Mike
