Q: Does this player work with older TVs with composite cables?
A: It should. It comes with a red, white, and Yellow cable. as well as an HDMi plug
Q: does this play regular DVDs and regular music CDs?
A: Yes ... It plays both DVDs and CDs

Q: Will this device play both region 1 AND region 4 DVDs?
A: The manual says that this is a region 1 player. but when you hit the set-up to bring up the menu and click down to the tv system it gives you three choices NTSC , PAL and AUTO .....as i don't have any disc that are out of Region 1 i can't say for sure if any other region is playable. I figure the PAL Set-up for TV system is if you happen to have a TV from outside of the US. Does not neccessarily allowing other regions to be played ...if they allow for a PAL set-up.
A: Do you clean the DVD beforehand? I take a regular facial tissue, put a tiny amount of regular alcohol on it, and gently wipe the DVD, then gently dry it. It may be helpful if you do not do that at present.
Q: Can I hook DVD player up to my laptop.
A: It has HDMI, and regular AV cables. No laptops come with INPUTS for these types of cables. A product that will capture video from a DVD player costs a LOT more than a DVD player. Your best option is just to buy an external DVD drive ($30 cheapest at Best Buy) and just play the DVDs through your laptop's media player.
Q: Does this output surround sound? I am getting sound in all 5 surround speakers and was surprised.
A: I found this out and will answer my own question. This unit does not have a surround sound decoder but passes the encoded sound to my TV which has a decoder. So the result is I get surround.
