    A Masterpiece of the Art

I had missed the original PS3 release of TLOU and was on the verge of actually getting it when I heard the Remastered edition was on its way. I spent the last week playing through the game and wanted to wait until I had fully completed it to actually put together a review. I was 'introduced' to Naughty Dog from the first Uncharted game. I played each of the three as they were released and was hooked from the beginning. From that perspective I was very familiar with the quality that Naughty Dog holds itself to and the level of cinematic polish that they bring to their games. That being said I expected TLOU to be held to those same standards and was a little leery at all the praise this game got. The comments people made about it made me think that perhaps they haven't played any Uncharted game and weren't aware of the style of Naughty Dog, which that in itself puts them held and shoulders above the competition. Ultimately I walked into this game hoping that I wouldn't be on the bandwagon and that I would find something not to like about the game. On one hand I was right, but on the other I couldn't help but fall in love with it. As the credits rolled by on the game I was convinced that TLOU was the best game I have ever played... but it wasn't the most enjoyable. If that seems contradictory I will explain further. It excels at telling a remarkable human story in an apocalyptic time with emotion and storytelling surpassing that of movies. The acting is impeccable and the motion capture is pristine. I truly wish the Academy Awards would introduce a category for video game motion capture and voice acting because this was something magical. While not wholly original - some of the motifs have been well used in standard zombie apocalypse settings (although to be fair Naughty Dog put an interesting twist on 'zombies') - it offered a level of emotion that takes 15-20 hours to establish that cinema just can't. Ellie (the 13 year old girl) is voiced by a 30 year actress but you'd be hard pressed to actually believe that while listening to her in the game. She's a foul-mouthed firecracker who, psychologically for me at least, I was glad to know wasn't actually voiced by 13 year old. I have no desire to spoil any of the storyline for you, and if you're like me, you somehow were completely able to avoid spoilers and it pays off. Leaving that behind I want to touch on gameplay. For those familiar with the Uncharted franchise I need to stress that this is light-years ahead of the gameplay mechanics that I have felt have always stunted the Uncharted games. But... it still wasn't quite there. You essentially have 3 zombie enemies and maybe 4 human enemies that you shoot, slice, stab, bludgeon, blowup, set ablaze, or just sneak by hundreds of time. The variation is lacking. Stealth components are a little iffy, especially near the beginning of the game. It brought me back to thinking of games like Metal Gear or Splinter Cell, and I feel they had a firmer handle on stealth than this did. It's not terrible, but at times it takes you out of the action and makes you think, "Seriously? The guy didn't hear me stabbing his buddy two feet away just because his back was turned to me?" Outside of that, the game has a great progression of guns/weapons that you're still unlocking right up to the last level. It has a very survival/horror feeling to it so you will ALWAYS be scrounging for ammo and supplies. If you're not a fan or a regenerative health - then you are in luck! Every health bar needs to be refilled by a med kit which you need to take the time in game to craft and then apply. Every now and then there will be a canned fruit that will give you some health back, but those are few and far between. I enjoy games like Resident Evil so I found this mechanic very fun and preserved the feeling that this wasn't a video game but something more real. The skill upgrade tree is great - it's not XP based, you need to collect 'pills' throughout the game. So essentially you could make it through the entire game without ever upgrading your skills. Same goes for weapons - you need to find scrap material, but you also need to find up to 5 tool kits which allow you to upgrade your weapons to varying degrees. I found this very fun and a slight deviation from normal. The settings are picturesque and it's evident a lot of love and care went into them. I don't often get supplemental material for games but I will be picking up the Art of TLOU book to keep around. I'm a sucker for video game soundtracks and this is no exception. The haunting guitar of Gustavo Santaolalla fits perfectly and like many modern game blockbusters, is on par, if not better than movie scores. I need to stress I fell in love in with this game as it went on. If the game lacked the acting and polished motion capture, then it would be a different story. The gameplay isn't enough to save the game by itself, no matter how beautiful and varied. It would have just gone down as a 'good' game instead of an amazing one. But I came to the conclusion that it was the single best game I have played. Not the most enjoyable or fun, but the best. If you're 16 and looking forward to the next CoD for frag fests - keep moving. If you're mature enough to want a game that stretches the boundaries of video games then this is your game. I'm 25 and have been playing games since birth. I've grown up in this trend of maturing games and found this to match what any other mature media genre can do in regards to storytelling, without the need for "Adult" themes that plague other games like Grand Theft Auto (Best Buy wouldn't let me type what I originally wrote... so "Adult" will suffice). Language is strong, but nothing we don't hear in other places (or online play). It's suitable enough for teens who aren't bothered by gore, violence, and language, but probably will resonate more with those of age to have children of their own.

The Last of Us is one of those gems that seems so far and few between these days. Naughty Dog is absolutely, hands-down, one of the true GREAT studios that Sony has so graciously blessed us Playstation owners with. Seriously, has there EVER been even a mediocre Naughty Dog game since its' inception? The Last of Us is absolutely a game that will always stand out for this decade and will certainly become a classic. The storyline is not another zombie game. It plays strongly on human condition, tough decisions, and heart felt moments. It will truly evoke your emotions through the characters and events. The single player campaign is second to none. It is well written, well dialogued, and well scripted. The game play is smooth, often frantic, yet highly rewarding. Strategy combines with run-n-gun differing based on circumstances. Plenty of exploring, plenty of rewards, and lots to discover off the beaten paths. The multiplayer is a whole new experience unlike anything else out there. The grit, panic, dynamics, and overall experience is just another layer of sweet, sweet buttercream icing on top of a diamond-encrusted cake. Seriously, there is almost no game out there that will leave your adrenaline ACTUALLY pumping like being on last stand. Last stand is when your team has no revives left and the enemy team is hunting you down like an animal. Some of the most EPIC gaming moments in my gaming lifetime (22+ years of gaming) has happened during these moments. Overall, if you haven't played TLoU, get with the program!

A Must Play If You Missed it on PS3

This honestly might be the best game I've ever played. I know a lot of people have heard that before, but I believe this is the complete package. It seriously gives HL2 & Bioshock (my 2 other personal favorites) a run for their money. It's nothing we haven't seen before in terms of mechanics/innovation but the story makes you forget about all that. It makes you believe. It makes you feel. Without spoiling anything it's essentially a Walking Dead/Survival Horror type story that plays like a perfect mix of Red Dead Redemption/Uncharted/Tomb Raider (from the makers of Uncharted, obviously) with a nice balance of story & 3rd person cover shooting. The story itself I can't say much about other than it's seriously awesome :) It will take you on one of the best journeys you'll play all year. That's all I want to say (DON"T READ MUCH ELSE BE AWARE OF SPOILERS!) Where this review gets my maximum praise though is for it's multuiplayer effort which gets seriously overlooked. I consider myself a hardcore MP gamer (with a heavy SOCOM, CS, Halo background) and this is the best entry since some of those games. A hardcore TPS with heavy cover aspects that also incorporates the scavaging/mending aspects from single player. With smaller teams it's the perfect blend of nail bitting edge of your seat action. I'm guessing the game also comes with all DLC released which at a discounted rate makes this the entire package. A must buy for $50, and a must buy for any new PS4 owners

    TLOU Remastered

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

When The Last of Us was released on PS3, it received overwhelmingly positive reviews and was praised for both it's story and overall gameplay. When the remaster was announced, people we skeptical of re-releasing a game that had only recently come out. This new version featured higher frame rates, improved gameplay and was absolutely worth buying again. The story follows Joel and Ellie as they cross a disaster-ridden United States to help fight back against the disease that had consumed so many. There are some very emotional points within the story and you cannot help but feel the emotions the characters are going through. Along the way, you'll encounter all sorts of different characters, both good and bad, and pick up and modify weapons to help you with your journey. The weapon choices are vast and you can generally run with your preferred weapon, so long as you're able to find ammo along the way. TLOU is a fantastic remastered game and, in my opinion, still is one of the top games available on the PS4 despite it's few-year-old age and with all the other titles that have been released subsequently. Highly recommended.

If you never had the opportunity to play this masterpiece on the PS3, now's the chance to play it on the PS4. At $20 it's a no-brainer. I didn't realize how much better this remastered version plays than the original until I went back and played the old one. Holy cow, the remastered version plays so much smoother!

The Best Game for Playstation 4

I got the Playstation 4 solely for this game. This version takes the ps3 version and makes it better in every way. The download is pretty big but it includes all of the downloadable content, story and maps. If you have never played the ps3 version then this is an absolute must buy. The game plays great at a third person perspective and everything from the player movement and background interaction is top notch, with great voice acting by Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson. The story will get you attached to these characters and you will feel the pain and joy they go through. The most surprising thing about this game is how great the multiplayer is. I've played everything from Gears of War,Halo to Call of Duty and this is by far my favorite online experience. There is no hero mode where one person can glitch and just dominate an entire team. You have to work as a team and if you dont your team will lose. There is no huge advantage that the other team will have and thats what makes the online so fun. This game is well worth the Game of the Year nominations and rewards it has recieved.

The remastered version is worth the price of admission if for nothing else than getting the left behind DLC. In addition, the load times have been decreased allowing for a great over all package. If you have never played the game, this is the version to do it with.

This was a nice upgrade from the PS3 version - it includes the single player DLC, has better graphics/framerate and good replay value.. only downside is that it's sold for almost full price of a new PS4 game.. being a "remake" a lower price would have been nice.

Excellent! The graphics are so cool. The game has a well scripted storyline that keeps you intrigued. It's also easy to bring up the various items to create the weapons that are needed in the game to survive. Highly recommend this game if you're into survival type video games.

    What's left to say

This amazing gaming experience has had its fair share of nay-sayers, but with so much acclaim it seems like a difficult task to stand up to the spotlight. But this Remastered edition does just that. It took what was already the (arguably) best-looking game on last-gen and made it one of the best-looking games of this new console generation. It remains one of the best told stories in the history of video game stories. Characters and pacing and mood and dialogue... You can read about it from better writers than myself. Some people have said that it is slow at first, but then picks up after a couple hours. I don't know about that. I was hooked on this game from the opening segment. The first 30 minutes gives you some small indication about what to expect from the mood and pacing of the rest of the game.

    Great Game

I'll be honest. I bought an Xbox one at launch, and just barley bought a PlayStation 4 this past Christmas. The only games I own for PlayStation 4 are the exclusive games for that system. With that being said I only own 6 plus this game now. I would have to say I was beginning to regret my purchase. But after buying this game I'm more content now. You must keep in mind that this is a PlayStation 3 game with some upgrades. So while it won't show off what the PlayStation is capable of, its still a nice looking game. But its the story and gameplay that will get you hooked. It will start off a little slower, but once you start getting more weapons and upgrading things then it really starts to show how good of a game it truly is. Highly recommend this game.

Im not going to make you read a novel to findout my views, but if you care to get multiple opinions just google "The Last of Us Reviews/PS4" and you will see that this game was voted the "Best of" for the last gen consoles and has now been remastered with beautiful graphics and 60fps and it looks absolutely stunning on the PS4. Naughty Dog has really done it again with yet another immersive story driven game that is sure to leave a life-long lasting impression and will certainly be one of the first titles mentioned in the G.O.A.T arguments. I rarely, if ever call a game perfect, but i cant possibly say this game is anything less then a perfect 10 out of 10.. Casual or Hardcore gamers alike will not be disappointed, pick it up ASAP!! trust me on this guys.

Great story, fun gameplay, good immersion. How do you make another game in a worn-out genre like zombie apocalypse special? With a FANTASTIC storyline. I admit, I skip cutscenes when I play video games, but I knew right away I wasn't skipping anything here. I was deeply invested in the main characters throughout the story (you'll connect with Joel within the opening segment). The gameplay is nothing new, but certainly well done. Looting and crafting progression makes this feel apocalyptic and not just the world as it is, but sprinkle in zombies. Resources are scarce, and it takes dedication to craft and hold onto your most deadly items, I definitely recommend it.
