    Nice laptop...after some finagling

I was looking for some laptops to buy for my office that would be used for basic tasks and web browsing. This laptop had all the specs I needed plus a touch screen at a great sale price. The processor is sufficient and the screen is pretty good. My only gripe has been the touchpad. Out of the box it supports multi finger gestures such as two finger scrolling. However, after completing setup, I was surprised to find the gestures no longer worked. Moreover, I had to press down harder than normal for the cursor to move. Thankfully I was able to fix this by downloading an updated driver from the Toshiba website and increasing the sensitivity of the touchpad in the settings. I can now say that navigating within this laptop is much more enjoyable as the gesture features works again. It's also nice to have a touch screen as an option. I would say this laptop is entry level but with a few nice extras (5th gen core i3, touch screen, 6gb ram). If you don't mind configuring a few things in the beginning, it can do a good job at completing basic computer work.

I purchased a cheaper laptop for my spouse. It turned out to be under powered. Exchanged it for one of these. After playing with the laptop I decided to purchase one of them for myself. :) It is quite speedy, and runs smoothly. My only complaint, I didn't like the function keys defaulting to the media keys instead of f1 through f12. It is just a simple setting change in the BIOS to change this behavior I have already configured my laptop to dual booth Ubuntu 15.10 and Windows 10. Ubuntu installed easily and runs great. The bluetooth is the only thing that didn't work out of the box under Ubuntu, but there are many guides on how to get it working. :) I would highly recommend this laptop for any one who wants to upgrade to a touch screen laptop. Both of us are using them daily and haven't had any problems.

This isn't the fastest laptop I've ever owned, but I had a limited approved amount for work and needed something that worked. It has a touch screen, and never owning one before or thinking that I would purchase a computer with a touch screen it's a nice feature. This will be used mostly for work and is more than capable of basic work functions. I wouldn't want to use it for CAD or GIS, but if you just need a laptop for more basic functions this will work just fine.

At the initial setup I could not get a internet connection so I had to let the Geek Squad reset the wireless card and ect. to get it going in the store.Still had to restart the computer and modem to get a connection at home.I have been stuck with windows Vista os. for 6 years on my HP so the W 10 is a huge improvement - so far.The HD screen is great but the mouse movement accuracy is not as good as my HP.This one has about every thing I needed except the backlite keyboard . Also the DVD player did not start up well/ played in broken frame slow motion and i had to work with it for a while to finally get it going.I have been a longtime fan of Toshiba products so I hope this will last. Also the hinge and customer service problems don't sound to good. But even on this review board they are trying to make it right.Really its a good laptop for the $$$.

Great personal laptop for tech savy folks

I recently purchased this laptop on Black Friday although it was not on sale that day. The price dropped right after I bought it and I got it for $369.99 with price match guarantee. The laptop works great. I've never had a Toshiba before and so far so good. There are no issues with my internet or problems as other reviewers stated. I would say this is great for tech savy folks and easy to get used to. It's also touchscreen and super thin although it's a little bulky but I have no problem with it because I needed a new laptop. The edges are sharp but easy to get used to it's not like you hurt your hands. The look and feel of it is great as well. I would definitely recommend this to others as it's a good value from a very good brand that I've never purchased before. Dell and HP are ok but this is just as good. Oh and by the way it's Bluetooth as well so this was a steal!

The keyboard is very stiff. The space bar does not always respond. The cursor jumps all over when trying to type. Cortana is a pain. I have had a technician try to adjust it. There are no adjustments. It is impossible to type fast. The keyboard is not friendly. I have had it for a year and do not like it. I regret buying it.

An awesome laptop for a bargain price

This is my third Toshiba laptop, and it definitely will not be my last. All three have been dependable, smooth running laptops, and my other 2 are still going strong (given to my kids). This time I had first gone with a Lenovo touchscreen laptop, about $100.00 more expensive than this one. What a mistake! From day one it was a problem. Touch screen acting up, numerous error messages, freezing. Took it back and got this Toshiba. Absolutely smooth sailing and what a difference. The touchscreen works perfectly. This does everything I need it to, and is fast enough for all of my needs. I've never had it lag on videos, surfing the web, etc. For those uses, this is perfect. For the money you just can't get a better laptop. On another note, the customer service at Best Buy was amazing. They weren't happy until I was happy. They treated me like I was their only customer. Totally thrilled with them.

    Excellent machine

I'm so impressed with this laptop. This is faster at i3 processor than the i5 processor I had with HP and Dell. I traded the HO and returned the Dell after one week trial. This Toshiba has excellent specs that is true to the functions. The battery holds for about 5 hours for basic works such as word processing and wen browsing so you don't have to frequently plug it in. The start up is pretty instant! Touch screen is also very user friendly and has a good resolution. Wifi-n (even though not wifi-AC) is just as fast! I use the computer upstairs while my router is downstairs. I don't know about playing video games or watching movies on this laptop since my use is for primarily for household and school work. The only drawback is the edges are sharper on the sides and on the wrist area so you can feel it. But the impressive performance outbeats that minor flaw for me. I tried Asus and Dell with better specs but ended up returning and chose this and am very satisfied!!!

GREAT LAPTOP AT AN AMAZING PRICE!

So, I had an HP Mini that was just used for email, writing documents and storing basic stuff....simple basic laptop. Well that's what I was looking for but came across this Toshiba Satellite in my hunt for a new laptop. This is my first Toshiba laptop and....Wow! The memory space is phenomenal, the RAM allows me to truly multitask (I'm a NYC Stage Manager and I need to have multiple tabs open during rehearsals, etc), and the set up was super quick. If you're used to Google Chrome (as I was) theres a learning curve on how to get online and how to use Windows 10, but I had all day to play and learn and I'm loving this laptop! If you're a Google user you can skip the part where you create a Microsoft email. I didn't know that, and had to reset and start over after an hour of loading apps, fixing the Start menu, etc....sigh.....The App Store is a little sparse. But I'm learning as im going. And at this price?!?! How can you beat that??? I'm very happy so far w my purchase! Nice going Toshiba! I got a great laptop.

    Love my Satellite!

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Note: I have a Satellite C55-B, as opposed to this C55-T. I don't know what the difference is. I purchased mine in August 2014. I love my Toshiba Satellite. It is equipped with 6GB RAM, Intel i3 1.70MHz 64 bit operating system. It came with Windows 8, which was OK, but I have upgraded (free) to Windows 10. I like Windows 10 better, as it operates more like the Windows of old, and this unit doesn't have a touch screen. Windows 8 would have been fine if I had a touch screen. I realize that Windows 8 might have been able to have preferences set more like Classic Windows, but I just never tried. I went from an iMac to this laptop (divorce). I was afraid I'd be disappointed, because I've grown to love the speed and stability of the Mac OS. However, this unit works better than Windows XP Pro or anything prior. I also really like XP Pro, until it got so slow that I could bake a cake just waiting for Quicken to update. I also bought it at Best Buy with a special combo pack, to include a carrying case and bluetooth mouse, for something like $400, but I can't remember. I can't complain about the durability of this unit either. It has traveled 50,000 miles THIS YEAR alone, over winter roads, often in very bumpy situations. It was so bumpy that the battery screws vibrated out and were lost forever. Had to stop somewhere in Pennsylvania (can't remember where) to get some replacement screws. Larry

    If Your Wi-Fi Is Slow

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This is more community service than a review. The computer seems fine. I don't love it or dislike it. But the Wi-Fi speed was less than half of what it was on the computer that this one replaced. I discovered that this was due to a default setting on the built-in Wi-Fi adapter. In Properties>Configure>Advanced>Bandwidth Capability, the default is 11b/g:20 MHz. I changed it to the only other choice, namely, 11/b/g:20/40MHZ. This more than doubled the speed, returning it to normal. Normal was 95 Mbps; I was getting 45 Mbps. My router is set to 40MHz. I didn't test leaving the adapter setting default and downgrading the router to 20 MHz. The router is a wireless n, so I don't know why a setting that doesn't mention n fixed the problem.

    excellent computer for price point

Given the price point, I think this is an excellent computer. I bought it so I could have a keyboard. I needed to use office word more than in the recent past. I needed a keyboard to make the typing easier. I really like the keyboard. It is a good size. I have needed to adjust to its size, its feels larger than a standard keyboard. I also wanted something to use for Netflix and the like. I have had nothing but positive results for that use. I also wanted to be able to check e-mail and use the internet. I find that I'm able to do all of those things. I even used it on Skype and I found that to be a positive experience as well. The camera quality was good as was the sound. I was also excited that this model came with a touch screen. It was not something that I had to have but it is nice. I have not had any trouble with responsiveness. Overall, I would recommend this computer to anyone who wants a "basic" computer at a reasonable price.

I purchased mine on 11/29/2015 It's very fast and quite. I love the touchscreen, windows 10, and the battery lasts very long. The only thing I noticed that if you place the laptop on a soft surface (i.e your lap) it will heat up a little bit on the right side where the fan is at. The startup of the device is a little bit slower than what I expected. Finally it is great for the price $369.99

Better Than What You Pay For

The Toshiba computer is not a high end computer, but, that said, it is a very good unit. With a 1tbyte drive and touch screen and a good solid operating system, it would be hard to find a unit with so much at a comparable price. I had an Toshiba Satellite prior to this one (and still use it). The one thing the older unit had that I find preferable is that the front of the old unit is rounded and more comfortable against the wrists and arms. The newer computer (the one being reviewed) has a sharp edge and can be a bit uncomfortable over extended use.
