So we bought this smart dimmer thinking it would be more economical in our current living room ceiling fan, than replacing all of the bulbs with hue light bulbs, so we could control things with our Amazon Echo system. Turns out, this is true. The down side is, to install this “smart dimmer” you need to meet a couple difficult criteria. 1.). The switch needs to be a single switch. This can not replace a double switch, such as one the would have both a fan and light in a single switch plate for example. 2.) You need to have a free power wire in the back of your switch socket for this to work. Most switches, have a circuit in, ground, and a circuit out. When you flip the the switch you close the loop and your light turns on. With the “smart dimmer” you need an additional “always live” power wire to keep the switch itself powered up, even when the switch is turned off. This makes sense, considering what it is, but after checking my house, there was only 1 location that actually met this criteria. My house is 2 stories and was built in 2015. 3.) And lastly, if you plan on using something like this via remote control or Alexa or something like that, it can get really confusing if it’s linked to a circuit with multiple switches. Alexa or your smart home device will be very confusing to operate remotely. Depending on the position of the other switch/switches on the circuit, your on/off on your smart hub, could actually be the opposite depending on the positions of the other switches on the circuit at the time you left your house. Just a couple things to think about. Bang for your buck, it’s quite nice, but you need to really have the perfect application to take advantage.

      Hi Ryan,

Thank you for detailing your experience with our product. We're happy to hear that overall you're enjoying the smart light switch and its features. Based on the description of your installation, it sounds like you're referring to the Neutral Wire, which is a requirement for all of our smart WiFi light switches. If your home's wiring doesn't have a neutral at the location(s) you would prefer to install the device, we suggest consulting with a licensed electrician to discuss what options are available.

Our Support Team is always happy to answer any questions you might have about our products. Please feel free to e-mail [email protected] and we'll gladly have a Support Agent follow up with you directly.

I have TP Link Casa outlet connectors. They work great. So, I decided to try these since the other products work well. I had Lutron Casseta's at my previous home. The Lutron's use a hub and are much more costly. Theses cost less and do not need a hub. The house was built in 2010, so it has all of the proper wiring. It has the 4 needed wires in the switch boxes. I wired them correctly. The system had power, but these would not work. So, I tried a second one with the same effect. So, then I called TP support and they were bewildered. No power was energizing them. Maybe I had a bad batch. I ordered Lutron's which also only require 3 wires. What I have noticed is that systems that use a hub seem more stable and work better. I have Arlo cameras, a DYI security system and Hue lights. These all use hubs and there are no issues. I also tried WIZ lights with no hub and again problems. It isn't my network because it blasts out very strong signal throughout the house at ridiculous speeds. I stream 4k and have Sonos throughout the house. Never any issues.

It works well. And it works well with the Kasa app. But it will NOT work in a 3-way circuit (more than one switch controls a light).
