Buying a step-over electric bike.

What is a step-over eBike?

If you’re wondering how to choose an electric bike, you might have noticed a range of frame designs. Generally, frames fall into two categories: step-over (also known as a traditional frame) and step-through. Step-over electric bikes require you to swing your leg over or take a very high step to mount the bike because the central part of the frame has a top tube that forms a triangle—a frequent shape in engineering because of the ideal way it distributes stress.

Of course, construction materials make a difference in strength as well, and the quality of modern materials has made step-through eBikes strong and durable options for many activities. Still, if you are mountain biking or doing intense cycling, you may want a traditional triangle frame design.

The other advantages of the traditional frame include the fact that the top tube can rest against the inside of your leg while you are stopped (freeing up your hands), and the top tube makes it easier to secure the bicycle to a bike rack.

Getting the most out of your step-over electric bicycle.

Get acquainted with the different classes of eBike and the rules and regulations in your area. There are three classes of eBike available. Class 3 eBikes, which can go faster than other models, are usually more heavily regulated on the road. Meanwhile, class 1 eBikes and class 2 eBikes both max out at 20mph (sometimes less, depending on the model), but class 1 requires pedal assistance and class 2 offers an independent throttle.

You will also want to pick design features that serve your needs. If you want to take your eBike on mass transit or into an office space or apartment, you might want a foldable eBike design. If you commute, make sure the max operating range works for the miles you’ll be traveling and find out whether you will be able to charge your bike at work. If you want to go off-road, buy a design intended for that use.

And whatever style you choose, don’t forget to include essentials, like a bike helmet and bicycle lock, when you place your order.
