A phono input is a dedicated connection for turntables. It includes built-in phono preamplification that boosts the low-level signal from a turntable cartridge and applies the proper equalization for playback.
You can connect a turntable with a moving-magnet (MM) cartridge directly to a compatible phono input. If the turntable has a built-in preamp, use its line-level output with an auxiliary or line input instead, or disable the built-in preamp when possible.
A phono input is designed for the low-level signal from a turntable cartridge and provides phono preamplification and equalization. Line-level inputs, such as auxiliary, CD or audio inputs, are intended for already amplified sources and generally should not receive a raw turntable signal.
Many turntables use a separate ground wire to help reduce unwanted hum. Connect the turntable's ground wire to the receiver's grounding terminal when available. Turntables without a separate ground wire may use another grounding design.
Support varies by model. Many receivers with phono inputs are designed for moving-magnet cartridges, while some include selectable moving-magnet and moving-coil settings. Check the receiver specifications to confirm cartridge compatibility.
