Great series...but...
||Posted .Great series, Great effects, and a different kind of Trek story telling. However...CBS putting it behind a paywall was a stupid idea, leaving this nice set as the best way to watch the show.

A great new vision unlike the original
Posted .Unless you are an absolute, bonafide classic Star Trek fan (aka ST:TOS 1965 -1969) you are going to enjoy the new vision of the classic Star Trek universe. Star Trek: Discovery is a stand apart series that tries to give a backstory to the original Trek series without resorting to the conventional technology of the mid-60s. Consider this as what Star Trek may have looked like had it been made in 2017 and get over the inconsistencies. You'll find that Discovery is a new vision with refreshingly new scenarios and promise. The effects are bolder, the storylines darker, the drama more intense. It is Star Trek to a new level of depth. Peppered throughout the series are shadows of things to come, and the producers have desperately tried to connect the series to the series of the original universe (as opposed to the alternate timeline of J.J. Abrams' "Kelvin timeline" universe). The effort seems like a freshman treatment at times with forgettable moments and side stories, yet in light of this being a project that has shifted production teams several times, it is forgivable. It was an almost impossible task considering the demands of fans of all the other series and movies. Somehow it manages to hold its own when seen as one huge ten part episode. Discovery is not perfect, but it is daring - it pushes the envelope and takes us to places "NO ONE has ever gone before." This Blu-Ray DVD Series One set promises a deeper insight into the production of a series it took literally years to complete. It includes cast and crew interviews, behind the scenes features and never seen before deleted scenes that prepare you for the upcoming second season. This is a series that needs to be added to most every Trekker or Trekkie's library. Keep in mind that the series is dark and deserves the mature rating it carries. Parents should be advised of the adult nature, violence and language.

Great Series
||Posted .Discovery has outstanding Visual Effects, the cast is great specialty Lieutenant Saru and First Officer Michael Gurnham. The Steelbook is the best one Best Buy was ever put out. As for the what the Klingon looked like one must remember that Klingon scientists used genetic material from human test subjects to create augmented soldiers which caused a viral pandemic that produces human-like features. Dr. Phlox of the Enterprise which is 95 years before Discovery founded a cure for the virus. So nobody knows what the Klingon looked like after the virus was stopped for they were that been seen for 100 years.

I have to ask "Am I watching Star Trek?"
||Posted .So I binged the 14 episodes over 3 days, not having watched this before my BD purchase (I just won't pay for CBS All Access). Throughout my binge I kept having to ask myself "Am I watching Star trek?" I say this because of the change of pace and tone of the series compared to other Trek series. Understandably this isn't in the same Universe because they ran the well dry I suppose, but this new direction is conflicting. The characters are likable, what makes Star Trek itself is there, characters challenging our current social environment are present, etc. Overall this is a very good series and I am very much anticipating Season 2's release. However, it just feels very different. And it is different, Klingons and all. Maybe this is for the better? In the end I can say this is palatable and I enjoy the continuous storyline (I am a long time anime fan where that's a constant, and DS9 is my favorite Trek series). Just go into the show with an open mind. After asking myself "Am I watching Star Trek?" and finishing the season I now ask myself "Does the Star Trek series need to be linear?"

What a Great Show
||Posted .At first I was hesitant about this new incarnation of Star Trek. I also watched the pilot episode of CBS. What I didn’t like was that is was only available on CBS Streaming and I couldn’t watch it on regular television. So, I waited for it to come out in video and did a marathon watch and absolutely loved it. Now I am going to have to subscribe to CBS All Access to watch the second season. I also had to either buy a new television or a Rocky. I opted to buy a new tv that has it all. Oh well, what we do to keep entertained!

Awesome show
||Posted .Lifelong Trekkie, and I absolutely love this show. It has its rough spots, but all first seasons of every Trek had them. Strong cast, beautiful special effects, and we finally have Andorians again! Yay! The bluray is brighter and clearer than the CBS app, it's gorgeous! I just wish that they had more extras, had incorporated the deleted scenes back in to the episodes - and to be honest, the Steelbox is lacking when it comes to artwork or really any bells and whistles. If I had known that I would have ordered the regular bluray edition.

Love it!
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed.I’ve seen every Star Trek show including the Animated Series from the 70’s. Each show is different despite being in the same universe. The production values are phenomenal! Each episode boasts movie quality special effects. The acting is superb. The hardest part most die hard fans will have is the look of the Klingons and how this fits into the Star Trek timeline with it’s events occurring just 10 years before the Original Series voyages. Best not to look to deep and just enjoy the series for what it is.
