Synopsis

The first season of The West Wing wastes no time in plunging the fledgling administration of American president Jed Bartlet (Martin Sheen) into a crisis, when the commander in chief is injured by a fall from a bicycle borrowed from his chief of staff, Leo McGarry (John Spencer). Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Josh Lyman (Bradley Whitford) and Communications Director Toby Ziegler (Richard Schiff) do a neat job alienating the entire Religious Right; and Toby's deputy, Sam Seaborn (Rob Lowe), exhibits his customary streak of irresponsibility by entering into a romance with call girl Laurie (Lisa Edelstein). As the season progresses, other major issues arise, some crucial, some not. Vice President Hoynes (Tim Matheson) refuses to espouse the party line (it isn't the first time, and it won't be the last); Mandy Hampton (Moira Kelly) is hired as Bartlet's consultant, but doesn't last the year; the president ponders the problem of "proportional response" when he mounts a deadly counterattack to avenge the death of his doctor when his plane is shot down over Jordan; Josh must deal with the death of his sister; the love-hate relationship between Press Secretary C.J. (Allison Janney) and reporter Danny Concannon (Timothy Busfield) heats up; war breaks out on the India-Pakistan border; Bartlet shows signs of fatigue (or perhaps something more serious) when he collapses just before his first State of the Union address; and "First Daughter" Zoey raises a few eyebrows (and, unfortunately, more than a few threats) when she begins dating Bartlet's young African-American aide, Charlie (Dule Hill). Among the recurring characters making their first appearances this season are Bartlet's loyal secretary and sometimes severest critic, Delores Landingham (Kathryn Joosten); Josh's wisecracking assistant, Donna Moss (Janel Moloney); and political consultant Joey Lucas (Marlee Matlin), a feisty deaf woman who is seldom seen without her intrepid interpreter (played by actress Maitlin's real-life interpreter, Bill O'Brien). The season ends on a cliffhanger, as Bartlet and his staff are besieged by an assassination attempt -- and it will not be until the following season that the "casualty list" will be posted. ~ Hal Erickson

    Love the series.

I am a fan of the series and could tell it was going to be on TV a long time. Because of this I waited for a deluxe boxed set to come out. It was worth the wait. Instead of paying $540 for the individual seasons and having multiple large cases taking up shelf space I got the full series at only just over $200. It comes with several booklets about how the series went from conception to the small screen and the scrip from the pilot. A video walkthrough of the production White House and how they used the set vs. how the real White House is set up was very interesting. I wish they had included more behind the scenes footage and commentary with the cast. There are only a few episodes with commentary and it is usually with the director or producer. I would have no doubts about recommending this collectors set as a good buy.

    The West Wing Complete Series

If you love "The West Wing" this is the best way to get it all. The show is great, but let's discuss the boxed set: The whole thing comes in attractive faux briefcase. Each season comes in a file folder, there is also a booklet with plenty of photos and a replica of the pilot script. But the best thing about the box set over the individual season sets is that these discs are single sided, thus giving them less chance to get scratched up. Overall a very good set of a very good show. Highly recommended.

I purchased this set as a gift for my husband. We both love the show and I am so happy that I was able to buy the complete series in one set instead of individual seasons. (far more cost effective) The only mild let-down is that it doesn't appear to be in HD. We've only finished watching the first season, and it wasn't in HD. Maybe the other seasons will be.....fingers crossed. Otherwise, I am very pleased with this set and have actually purchased another set to give as a gift. Excellent writing and great ensemble cast!

Bought this set for my wife for her birthday (she has always loved this show.) Fantastic set for the money (got it on sale) and there isn't anything about it Not to Love. Personally, the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was because it wasn't available on Blu Ray. Since everything is eventually going digital, HD to digital conversions go smoother if the source is a Blu Ray VS standard DVD

Love love love Aaron Sorkin's writing, style, wit, pace, episode story lines & ongoing character story lines - all wonderful. The actors are also such masters of their craft. So endearing. The pace is always an interesting factor. This complete DVD set is beautifully designed. The packaging is collection worthy, the DVDs are one sided, not both, which we prefer. We haven't looked at the Extras yet to comment on those.

The West Wing is probably one of the best TV shows ever broadcast in the US. This particular set is great in that in addition to having the typical DVD set extras (commentaries and the like), it also has a copy of the pilot episode script and the DVD packaging mimics government file folders. Finally, the cherry on the top for me was that I got it on sale for ~$60.

I love this show and wish it was still on air. This series collection is perfect for the die hard follower, but also for those into politics and humor. Each show is filled with fantastic one-liners and amazing acting, so if you are looking for the perfect show that keeps on giving then this is the collection for you.

The West Wing is one of my all-time favorite shows and it still resonates today. The series is beautifully boxed with each season in a separate file. I am on season five and so far have only experienced a glitch in one episode. Scene selection was a help in getting past the glitch. If you are a West Wing fan, you will love this box set.
