A reference demo for Dolby Atmos!
||Posted . Owned for 1.5 years when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is excellent choice all around: the movie (one of the best “natural disaster” genre choices), visually & for the sound. Surround was immersive coming from all channels, overhead heavy driven with lots of low end. HRD is a bonus. Digital copy & slipcover included.

Easily Roland Emmerich's best film and my personal
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. While I was cautioned against reviewing this particular disaster film, I still enjoyed most of this movie. This work employed a monstrous amount of CGI and visual effects to complete the disaster scenes. This was accompanied by very cliche acting scenes and a large amount of drama that catered to a very unlikely plot. The odds of the protagonists making it out of every situation with as little casualties as they had is mind boggling to me. The way that they portray the earthquake reactions is very alarming because the frequency of California’s earthquakes and their small seismic tremors leading to the world ending disaster is very confusing and misleading in the way that they didn’t portray the public outcry in a larger magnitude. The signs that the Earth was undergoing major environmental changes were there for everyone in California to see before the leading scientist had a chance to convince the president. The way that the ships were kept under such secrecy is very unbelievable to me but this movie was filmed in 2009 so they probably did not take into account how intrusive and widespread the internet is now. This movie just in general has a lot of inconsistencies and probably contributed to a lot of the hype around the media’s portrayal and public opinion surrounding the mayan calendar and their culture. There was a lot of drama throughout the film due to many family dynamics that helped add to the excitement of the disaster footage. For these disasters to seem feasible, a lot would have to go wrong within our environment very quickly to capture the public’s opinion and bring attention to possible explanations like the Sun’s neutrino emissions. Overall, this was a long and mostly entertaining movie with a lot of special effects and crazy scenes from a real life doomsday.

Incredible to think what if
||Posted . Owned for 9 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First off the movie 2012 I have to say is a what-if movie. What if this had actually happened would it have played out the same way and just how many people in the world would have survived. The crazy thing is the scenario could still play out because anybody who lives in this world right now knows Yellowstone is still a super volcano waiting to erupt. You have a great castanist John Cusack, Woody harrelson and Danny Glover to name a few. I can't imagine what people would have to go through to survive something like this if it was survivable. To know that there's a powder keg sitting in the middle of the United States 20 miles wide that can wipe out humanity in a snap of a finger. You know it'll make mouth Vesuvius look like a firecracker. It's a long movie Phil with a lot of what ifs great special effects and impressive acting. If you're the type of person who likes disaster movies this is a good one to own.

Half an upgrade.
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I really enjoyed this movie when I saw it in the theatres in 2009. I bought the blu-ray immediately on it's release date, and really enjoyed the way it looked and sounded. I wish I could say the same about this 4k version, however. Sony is generally wonderful about their 4k restorations, but this film is only 50% good..in my opinion. The new Dolby Atmos track on this 4k version is really nice, with some impressive low end and atmospherics. Really thunderous bass isn't there, though..and I expected that from a disaster epic of this caliber. The picture quality is only marginally better than the blu-ray, and therefore was disappointing. In short..if you have Atmos capability, the disc is a good upgrade over the blu-ray. If not..then stick with your blu-ray copy.
