Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection - 4K Blu-Ray [4K Ultra HD Blu-ray]

Three words tell why I bought this...Wrath Of Khan. I have had several versions of this movie, including a collection on bluray of every Trek movie That I bought last year. Couldn't resist Khan on 4k , it is the best Trek movie ever. So far I've watched it and Search for Spock, watching the fourth tonight. The picture is top drawer of course, Surprised me how much better than the bluray, the sound is awesome, they did quite a job on it. My only beef about this collection is the usual, money wasted on bluray versions. Two plastic boxes, one for 4k and the other for bluray, why do they do this? Anyway, an incremental increase in quality over the bluray versions. Upto the individual Trekie weather or not its worth it. It is to me.

The original STAR TREK finally comes to 4K format. Although not the complete 6 movies for the original crew, this set has the first 4 in the series. I can see why they did it this way. Marketing and cost. These movies were released from 1979 to 1986, marking STAR TREK IV to be 35 years old now. All four looking pretty good on the 4K format with improved sound in English 7.1 Dolby TrueHD. I have an additional sound bar that the audio goes through instead of using just the TV speakers. You can hear so much more. For picture quality, there is a difference I have noticed. If you play these back on an UHD TV with HDR, you will most likely see a difference although not groundbreaking. The most difference I saw was the The Motion Picture, particularly in the beginning scenes in space where craft are going to and around the Enterprise. I believe there was some touchup work done there for the 4K. I have the previous Blu-ray on that and it was noticeable for me. THe movies looked really good for their age and am proud now to own this set. The packaging, well, it is okay. At least we have the discs separated in their own cases, 4K and Blu-ray versions. Artwork is good, no artwork on the discs themselves. Black for the 4K and standard Blue for the Blu-rays. The 4K discs say on them that there are special features. There are NO SPECIAL FEATURES on the 4K discs. This is a misprint. I do not count Audio Commentary as special features. That is in the SETTINGS selection where you can pick whatever you see there for Audio. ALL SPECIAL FEATURES for each movie are on the Blu-ray discs. The cardboard outer shell is a bit flimsy much like that of the Indiana Jones set released earlier by Paramount. The artwork is good, but that outer box will be tested over time for wear and tear. All in all, a good to excellent set for the first 4 movies in the series. Hopefully, we get the other 2 sets to follow, V, Vi, VII then VIII, IX, X. I am only assuming they will do it this way to keep the cost down for consumers, or they could do the last 6 at once. Recommended if you really want the 4K upgrade, which is worth it to me.

I just purchased this set the other day. Couldn’t be more pleased now I know why they didn’t include V VI those movies weren’t as good as the first four all and all very satisfied with this collection quality of picture and sound excellent viewing experience. I very much recommend this collection

I've watched the 4K discs of the first three movies so far. This review is of those 4K discs only. All three prints are very clear, very bright. You get a choice of the Director's Cut for TWOK or the theatrical version. There is no option for the Director's Cut of TMP. I am not a bug for extras, and there are not many on these 4K discs. The box advertises the extras as being on the Blu-Rays. You get choices for commentaries. TMP has an option for the isolated soundtrack. Most Trekkies will likely complain the most about the lack of extras being printed on the 4K discs. I prefer the studio get the main feature right and I think Paramount did in this instance. The audio on all three sounds great. Here's the thing, though, if you do not have an honest-to-God cinema surround set up you won't notice any enhancement or improvement. I have 7.2 surround system, each piece being full-sized and the subs are 12", so yeah, everything sounds (and feels) great. If you are running a small bookshelf system or a sound bar, you aren't going to hear much difference. When I heard Ilia's Theme piping through all seven speakers on my system it took me back to the first time I saw TMP at the theater. The key question: Is the 4-movie set worth the price? I paid $77.99, which is about $19.50 per movie. You get 4K and Blu-Ray discs plus digital codes for each of the movies. $19.50 per movie is a fair rate in the market as I write. Dedicated Trek fans with 4K UHD capability probably will want the set, but IMLTHO I think it's worth waiting for the inevitable sales. If you want the movies individually you will have to wait to see if Paramount offers the 4K editions that way. The Blu-Rays are available individually with digital codes. As to 4K v Blu-Ray, this is something you will have to decide based on your equipment. If you have a good player & a good screen, you see the difference in 4K on each of these. Each of these movies is at least 35 years old but I was impressed with the clarity and color on I-III. Your mileage may vary.
