Synopsis

Grosse Pointe Blank
Most people have trouble deciding what to say when they're asked what they've been doing with their lives at a High School reunion, but Martin Blank (as played by John Cusack) has a different problem than most -- he has to make his career sound less interesting than it actually is. Martin is a former CIA operative who is now a freelance hit man, making good money for killing people he doesn't know. However, Martin's game has been a bit off lately; he's no longer happy in his work, and both his secretary Marcella (Joan Cusack) and his psychiatrist, Dr. Oatman (Alan Arkin), who is more than a bit nervous about having a hired assassin as a patient, think that Martin should accept an offered assignment in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, his old home town, which would conveniently coincide with his ten year high school reunion. While in Grosse Pointe, Martin discovers that his high school sweetheart, Debi Newberry (Minnie Driver), is still living in town, and still holds a grudge against him for standing her up on prom night. While Martin tries to sort out his past and tie up loose ends with Debi (whom he still loves), he discovers someone in Grosse Pointe is out to kill him; he's also confronted by the highly unstable Mr. Grocer (Dan Aykroyd), a fellow hit man who wants Martin to join forces with him and form a union and isn't keen on taking no for an answer. Grosse Pointe Blank was a pet project for star John Cusack, who co-wrote the screenplay and also served as co-producer. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

New package and digital copy, same BAD 1998 disc

I went into a local store to check out the packaging for this 2-disc re-release, hoping that Disney would finally release a DVD of Grosse Pointe Blank with a new 16x9 anamorphic transfer. This new disc appears to be the same disc that was released in 1998, and NOT a new anamorphic widescreen transfer. On the back of the package, it still lists "Dolby Digital Surround Sound" and "1.85:1 Widescreen," the same as it did on the original DVD (and the combo GBP/High Fidelity disc that came out later). The new 2-disc release for "High Fidelity" lists the same bonus features as its original release, and showed as "Enhanced for 16x9 Televisions." It appears the only difference between this release and the original 1998 issue is a second disc with a digital copy for portable video players and updated packaging. I didn't end up buying it based on the packaging and won't until they release a proper version for 16x9 televisions (hopefully a Blu-ray). I am extremely disappointed that Disney would even bother to re-release such an antiquated, low-quality DVD with only the most minor of improvements (packaging, digital copy). Even if they had not added any bonus features (the original release had none to speak of), an updated anamorphic transfer wouldn't be too much to ask. Will absolutely not buy a copy of Grosse Pointe Blank until a good-quality DVD or Blu-ray is made available.

    Fun film

This is not the most intelligent film you will ever find the fight sequences do seem a little too coreographed, but these flaws can easily be put aside to just enjoy the comedic situation. John Cusack is enjoyable in the role and Dan Akroyd gives a great performance, which seems rare anymore. The only thing holding me back from fully endorsing this is that Bestbuy.com also has a two pack of Grosse Point Blank and High Fidelity, another great film, listed for the same price. If you don't own High Fidelity pick that one up. Either way you won't lose by owning a copy of Grosse Point Blank.

    A Very Enjoyable Film

This one really surprised me. I thought the movie was going to be really bad, and boy was I wrong. A very enjoyable film, and well worth a watch. John Cusack's best performance since 'Better Off Dead'. The only setback to this dvd is that it is a bare-bones letterbox widescreen release (non-anamorphic), it should have received a lot more attention.

This is a funny romantic comedy with a great soundtrack. The blu ray transfer is kind of average, but it's the best you can find it on home video.

This movie is my basis for comparison when I see movies come out that fall into the hitman/dark comedy genre. Usually I am left disappointed, but at least I always have this one to fall back on.

I love this movie and looks great on Blu-Ray. This still has one of my favorite lines of all time about the French.
