The skating is probably worse than ever, and online play is all but dead a month in. For a hockey fanatic, it's likely going to be the standard regardless, but EA again proves its need for competition. Online play is further away from realistic looking hockey than ever (pokechecks extremely overpowered, lack in variety of scoring), and the same bugs (loops, glitches) and annoyances (slow menus, lack of attention to fine details) that have plagued the series for a decade return in force. Threes is an enjoyable edition, and franchise mode took a slight step forward, but the NHL series still remains well behind all other sports games on the market in quality.

The game is fun, but it's a whole lot of the same from the last two iterations. The stick control is improved, which is nice, and they added the expansion draft mode (one of the main reasons I got it) which also makes Franchise Mode a little more interesting, but the best feature is the NHL Threes mode. It's a blast to play with friends - that said, you could probably get by with NHL 17 until this one drops a little in price.

EA continues to improve year by year with their nhl series. Yes the base of the game is the same year after year, but they focus on improving a certain aspect each year and mastering whatever they started the year before, this makes for an ever improving game. In addition to threes mode which will keep you and friends busy for a bit.

There isn't much to say about this game. It's NHL and they release it every year. Its not very different than the previous release except for the single player aspect of HUT which lets you earn cards for playing through every NHL team on varying difficulties. You can also play HUT with a friend online too which is a fantastic addition.

Honestly it's not a bad game, I just don't recommend it to anyone. It is ok but I think that it's just kind of basic and not great graphics. It can be a bit challenging and confusing, I played but just am not a fan, I like Nhl 15 and 16, Never tried 17. Honestly don't waste $40-60 on this game In my opinion it's not worth it.

Nhl still has pretty much everything from last year with an added new stick check and 3 on 3 mode. I find it more difficult to pick the puck up and maintain control. Still remains very fun with friends. Connecting to others in a lobby seems to take longer this year when finding a full 6 on 6 game. Overall, a pretty standard affair.

It had been a few years since I got a hockey and I forgot how fun (and challenging) they can be. I liked that you could simplify the controls and the options and online are great. Still not sure I need to get this every year, but great game, and I got it at a great price!

NHL has been an annual purchase for me since NHL 09. This years game is an upgrade from the last couple of years in my opinion but still lacks something “great.” I can’t pinpoint it but something with an awe factor just isn’t there. The menus are still abysmally slow. Great game play though!
