All the nice new features
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Checked out many new receivers, this has the features, I needed and wanted. Wireless wifi connectivity, 6 HDMI Ports, component audio inputs out puts, am/fm receiver, universal remote Blue tooth to stream from many phones iPads etc. optical, coaxial connections. Most of all works, very, very well. At this price point a excellent value.

Upgrade from Sony
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Purchased this as an upgrade from our 8 year old 5.1 Sony unit. MUCH improved sound and functions. I had no issue setting up the WIFI, Pandora and blue tooth and got it all dialed in starting with the mic and then tweaking from there. I was also able to lip sync the HDMI to my TV, which was an annoyance with the Sony, now the words match the lips! Couple of downsides to the unit, first the front screen and onscreen menu are straight out of the 80's. I think my Tandy 1000 had better graphics, anyone younger than 30 will most likely not understand that reference. Second, the blue screen. The unit produces a blue screen when the signal is lost, which is a problem because my TV recognizes that as a signal and won't shut-off. So when the DVR or Blue-ray shut down I have to make sure and turn off the stereo as it will keep my TV on. This is most annoying as I frequently fall asleep watching shows and while with my old unit the TV would be off when I woke up, now i wake up to a big bright blue screen. Finally, there is a SEVERE video lag with the unit. Like I said before the unit allows me to dial this in for movies, it is almost a full 1/2 second lag, it is beyond usable for video games. Any FPS or online game will cause much swearing and cursing as you will be dead before the other players even show up on your screen. I didn't realize this for a good 2 weeks and though the games server was crashing before understanding what the problem was. Other than those items the unit sounds amazing and really makes movie watching that much more enjoyable.

Great but not awesome
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It would be easy to give this receiver five stars. It is nicely constructed, feature rich, and reasonably priced for its class. However, some of its features are not as straightforward as expected. As far as sound, this is an excellent receiver. It puts out plenty of sound for our family room. I recently wired up the room for 5.1 sound and am pleased with how it drives the speakers and subwoofer. The included mic is useful for equalizing the room, although additional tone controls would be useful. Many receivers have multiple equalization options and I'm surprised this one does not allow more customization. The room is not too large so we have not run the volume up very high. At moderate sound levels, the receiver does not overheat. The menus and remote are not as well polished. I found it somewhat confusing when trying to navigate the network and even USB drives. There should be a menu return selection for each menu. I often wonder how to get back to the previous menu. The remote layout could also be arranged a little more intuitively. I have to consciously select which button to press by looking at the labels and trying to remember what button does what function. Grouping then together would be easier. Of course, I am going to end up programming a universal remote and store this one away. In summary, I really like this receiver, but don't love it.

Great 5.2 Theater Receiver
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Bluetooth feature was a major selling point for us on this model. It works great throughout the home allowing us to use smart phones and computers to play music on surround. The system has a microphone that plugs into set up the sound system for three ideal seating positions. Once calibrated the sound on the stereo though my Bose Acoustimass sounds incredible. Our components all plug in through the receiver so the stereo has to be on in order to watch cable. This doesn't have to be the case but it has to be a conscious decision when setting up the system. Cable sound is excellent though the theater system and my 23 year old Sony CD player sounds amazing through this receiver. This is the second Onkyo system we own. This is the little brother to the TX-NR636 system we bought last year. That system has multi-zone and 7.2 versus the TX-NR535 (rated here). The TX-NR535 is only a single area and 5.2 so if you need a second zone or more speakers this may not work for you. The TX-NR525 is a great single room system. Both Onkyo systems are excellent and we couldn't be happier with the sound they bring to our home entertainment.

Very Decent Beginner Level Receiver (4.5 Stars)
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought the NR535 when it was a daily deal a couple weeks back and have been thoroughly impressed so far with its features (wi-fi and bluetooth) and sound quality. The only thing this receiver does not have, which for some reason most of the Onkyo receivers are missing, is Airplay capability. Now I know bluetooth can of course be used in lieu of Airplay in most cases but nonetheless I usually feel that Airplay, utilizing wi-fi versus bluetooth technology, just tends to give me better audio quality. However, for the price I paid I cannot really complain and I would definitely recommend giving this receiver a try if you a looking for 5.1 or .2 ht setup and want wi-fi network access and bluetooth.

Great receiver could be just a little better
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this initially for our bedroom but then transferred it to pair with a new Vizio 4k tv. Still have not been able to test 4k60 on any of my connected computers but this works great for passthrough and connected devices. The one area where it fails is setting up second zone (which is why it is no longer in our bedroom) If you hope to set up two sound systems on one receiver look elsewhere as second zone can only do bluetooth and network sound. I'm sure this will work for some but I don't want competing sounds in neighboring rooms. I'll stick with AppleTVs and soundbars for now as a cheaper alternative.

Great overall with a few minor issues
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I got this unit to replace a very old Sony. The main thing I was looking for was zone 2 capability in order to play music thru some outdoor speakers. Neither the box nor the basic intructions make it clear that you need to buy a "pre-main" or secondary amplifier if you are going to attach another set of speakers via the RCA jack. My only other complaint is that there is no graphic interface with the TV and so if you use it for channels such as Pandora, it looks like you are playing an Atari game from the '70s! Otherwise, the sound has been great and setting up the Wi-fi was a breeze.

Q: Questionis this receiver thx certified?
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer No, the receiver is not THX certified. It looks like most of Onkyo's THX certified receivers fall into the Home Theater setups with what looks like a few new A/V receivers coming out with the THX certification as well. Most of their receivers appear to offer dts as well as Dolby Atmos.

Q: QuestionHow many speakers will it support?I'm new to the world of AV receivers... How many speakers will this support? I've got four(4) inside the house for surround sound, and two(2) on the porch. Will it support all six, in two zones? Thanks for your help!
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer it's a 5.2 so that means 5 surround and up to 2 subs, 7.2 would be 7 surround and 2 subs. etc. So NO it will not support 6 in one zone but it can extend to a second zone in which you can use the extra two speakers. Btw, 4 speakers for surround is really a waste when you can add a center speaker (assuming that's what's missing) for a much more superior sound.

Q: QuestionAuto Gain?Does this (any) receiver control the volume level of the tv. Would like a solution to commercial spikes. Would like output level to stay the same no matter what the input level is. Is this the answer??
Asked by Anonymous.
- A:Answer No this Onkyo will not control the volume level on the TV. The TV volume control is a function that is built into the TV.
