Hello! You do not need a subscription. You simply download the "Alexa" App on your smart phone and set up from there. If you would like to listen to specific music streaming services such as Amazon Music Unlimited, or something like Spotify Premium, you would need that subscription, but there is plenty of free streaming services to listen to genres of music on.
