Hello Joy, Yes, you can download and read books on this device. It is not like a Kindle E-reader where you can read in the sun (this is a tablet screen, so similar to a phone screen, and a HD Screen) so it is shiny, but in regular indoor light it is a nice screen and 8", so a good size for reading.
