• You can spend money on kindle apps and such. Amazon has a prime membership monthly fee if you want to get prime member benefits. However if you get the ad supported version of the tablet it is cheaper than non ad supported devices

• Hello DVT! Thanks so much for your question! While there are a number of different 3rd party app subscriptions that you can have and there are some added benefits to having an Amazon Prime subscription, it is not necessary to have and use the tablet.
