Not sure about Direct TV but I tried TNT on demand App and could not stream certain shows, get audio without video.

It depends on the DirectTV app permissions. On another provider (Charter Spectrum) I was given a "Sorry External Display is not supported with this Application.

I use it to watch Netflix from my iPhone 6 without any problems. It shows up on the tv exactly as you see it on your phone, home screen, app icons, everything. What you see on your phone appears on the screen.
