If you use chrome as your browser on your macbook you can cast directly to your chromecast. If you want to watch movies stored on your hard drive there are chrome extensions that allow you to cast files. Videostream is the name of the one I use. There is no need for apple tv.

Most of time I use my iPad or iphone and cast my netflix/youtube and watch the video on the big screen. Occasionally, I want to watch something in my browser that's not supported by chromecast, e.g. korean drama. I then use Chrome browser with Google Cast extension from my PC and cast the video to the TV. I don't have cable any more so I hope that helps answer your question.

If you have a MacBook Pro which has an HDMI port, I plug it directly into the TV monitor and watch movies playing on my Mac on the big screen. Take your laptop into one of the people at the store in the Apple department of Best Buy or an Apple store, they can probably tell you 100%
