“Has anyone tried this in a rural area with less than adequate AT&T DSL signal? We have a 2800sf home, with metal roof, and have tried various routers and extenders to get signal throughout our home, but have been unsuccessful. Any chance this may help?”

You should try Google WiFi. The mesh system is the only way you'll get reliable WiFi throughout your home. You can add as many devices as necessary. Had the same problem with a client in upstate NY and that was the only thing that worked.
