Some tips to help make it AAA+ Shiny

After Best Buy sold me on that Note 9 deal I learned that Sprint's mobile data here is now around 200Mb/s. Then I saw they've also been having specials going for an alright 8" tablet for free and one much nicer discounted to $100. The condition to get the tablets was agreeing to pay $25/mo per unlimited ~200Mbit/s mobile broadband connection. .... 'k. Hahahaha, no, seriously. So now I have 6 tablets.. These routers may seem pricey, but they're worth every penny. It definitely doesn't hurt to know that they're also called RT-AC66U-B1. It's worth looking up, the two models are only one single model on the fcc testing pages. One just gets the juice kicked up before being sold, but you can turn it up on the other as well. If you're willing to spend a few minutes in setup you can do that to either. This (or that) router is perfect for my needs. It's compatible with dd-wrt, openwrt, tomato, merlin, and more. Those are all custom firmwares. Asus builds the best normal household routers, and they built in amazing features that custom firmware can expand on even more. On top of their consistent high speed they're also full of wonderful features, like security good enough that Sprint can't see what their 6 unlimited bandwidth lines are doing. Anothger great one is that mobile phones/tablets can tether directly into it's USB ports to feed it with internets and also charge the devices, so they're always charged and always connected. Each of these (those) routers can also tether 2 mobile devices. I was very surprised to learn that it does load balancing as well as it does, especially cming together the way it does. Works flawlessly. *Please note that the router can't combine the 2 200Mb/s internet lines into one 400Mb/s line, but that only matters if you'd need all of the bandwidth for one stream or one file connection. One of these lines can stream 8k VR and then some, It can give you 200Mb/s from 2 different connections at once, or 4*100Mb, or 8*50Mb, etc. Torrent and pretty much everything else. I now have a combined average of 1,000-1,300Mb/s for $150/month. I'm actually going to do it, guys. After all these years waiting, I'm finally going to show them what they should have known. For all of us. I'm going to download a car.

This is a fantastic router. I had the previous version of this one which was the RT-68U. It lasted me 5 years but got struck by lightning. Since it was so good, I figured why change. This current router is an updated revision of it. I can stream Blu-ray quality HD over the 2.4 Wifi network flawlessly with this router even over distances of 45 feet through walls and all without a problem. I have a hard drive connected to it through the USB 3.0 port on the back to share access to my movies all over the house. Have an an HDhomerun connected to it as well for OTA television and again, can stream those HD channels anywhere in the house. I have over 2 acres of land also and can be out in my backyard at the extreme end if it which is 100+ feet away and STILL connect to the WiFi from this router on my cell. Even when we have over 6 connections at once going on via WiFi it just keeps performing well no matter if it's streaming HD video or Netflix, etc. The wireless capabilities on this router are the best I've seen both for general connectivity and networking. My review is based heavily on this because I know many of you will be using these functions primarily. You shouldn't have any problems. Also keep in mind that the previous revision, the RT-68U, was rated one of the best ever on CNET. Wired networking is as good as ever as well. It has dual WAN capabilities which is important if you reside somewhere in a rural area without good data access which is my situation. It also has the latest security features, can manage a samba, upnp or print server from it through it's USB ports not to mention connect to this router remotely to access your files away from home. It has it all! For this price you are really getting an Enterprise class router almost. It will go well above and beyond for the average home user but honestly, this router would work very well for a business owner with an office of employees as well.

Bought this router solely for it's advanced features that few other consumer level routers have, and frankly, everyone should use. Replaced a perfectly good Apple AirPort Extreme that served me well, but it's simplicity prevented advanced setup and Apple's rumor of getting out of the router business with no future models, it became time to move on. Setup hint - use same network name and password and most devices automatically recognized the Asus and set themselves up. I specifically got this router for the integrated VPN (Virtual Private Network) and supporting DDNS features. I am actually typing this review in Europe which works fine directly, but now have a secure channel that suggests I am in Florida. What mandated the change was setting up a security camera system and need for remote access, but benefits go far beyond that. The VPN provides private access to personal accounts - such as your financial accounts - from viewing eyes and intercepts. All you need is a host to access then internet and have activated the VPN from work and other public areas such as Starbucks. Another benefit, if I want to watch an NFL game or other TV programming that is blocked where I am but available online at home...guess what...they think I am at home. Now you see why everyone should have this feature supported in every router, but this is one of the few. Weakness - Documentation, both in the manual and online FAQ is marginal. Gives the basics of setup but how to use (which user/password is it asking for) or troubleshooting common difficulties is missing. The same can be said of others though. Had trouble with Asus internal DDNS and eventually went with a free No-IP, but it also stopped at setup, troubleshooting hinted at port forwarding but very general even when discussing the Asus router setup. Slight learning curve, but well worth it.

I bought this router to replace the WiFi portion of the Modem provided by Spectrum which did not provide an adequate signal to reach all the devices in my house - it just didn't have the range. This router can be used alone or if you live in a larger home and need the extra coverage, it can be used to create a Mesh network with other compatible Asus routers. Setting up the router is very easy, you need to connect the router to a computer or laptop and once you power it up it will launch a quick setup option that asks a few questions and you're done. It is also possible to set it up using your smartphone by downloading the app and as I have an Android device I downloaded it from Google Play and used the app to see what devices were connecting with the router and to configure the security settings. I thought I might need two to set up a mesh network but this one router reached every device in my house and provided sufficient throughput to allow me to stream Netflix 4K HDR programs with ease. I found that placing it on a high shelf significantly increased it's range. As I didn't have one, I bought a glass shelf at Home Depot that mounts right onto the wall and placed it seven feet above the floor and to hide the wires going up the wall to the router I bought a 1" PVC pipe and snaked the wires through it. To make it blend with the wall I painted it the same color as the wall as I had some paint left and I ran it up the wall next to the door frame. As I recently added another Smart TV at the far end of my house far from the router, I needed the extra range and this router did the trick.

I was reluctant to buy the RT-AC1900P in the first place, but I know two people who are happy with theirs (except for the mechanical failure of the power button on one of them) so I did it. The device was installed easily and worked _very_ well for three months serving only wireless clients (no Ethernet clients, no USB-attached devices) until ten days ago when it began rebooting every two to about sixty minutes. The system log shows this behavior clearly as well as numerous jffs2 CRC errors. I opened a case with ASUS support--which has been slow and inefficient--and I'm hoping for an RMA, but my confidence in a quick resolution with a long-term positive outcome is not high. As well as the device worked when it did work, I'm not sure that I can bring myself to purchase another or to recommend that anyone else do so. For now, I've gone back to a Frontier-supplied ARRIS NVG468MQ that drops just the wireless interfaces a couple of times a day (which--though an improvement--is still painful because all of the clients are wireless).

This is the fourth ASUS AC1900 router that I've purchased over the last couple of years. Features to highlight include a 2.4GHz band that still offers reliable connectivity and approximately 15% of max mbps at 100-yard in a suburban environment. The range is considerably diminished for the 5GHz band -- it gets a pretty choppy around at around half that in the 50-yard range. ASUS has been quite aggressive in their continued tweaking and development of features, which is a welcome relief as compared with other products that I've owned. They've released firmware updates almost every month or two for the last two years, much of it in preparation for and fine-tuning of their AiMesh feature, which is now popularized under different names by different brands, but perhaps not so well implemented. I have three routers that kind of "triangulate" my space. This is admittedly a bit of overkill, but nonetheless a significant solution to a few unique configuration problems. While the system and the software -- both browser based and the iOS / Android versions -- are well implemented and of actual intuitive use, I wasn't truly impressed with the feature until I connected the three together with a hardwire for their main internet connection, which my configuration allowed me to do, but is probably not going to be the case in most applications. Without the hardwire, the system still connected and functioned as described, I was simply not getting the speeds that I had before from my either band. Once the hardwire was established, speeds are at max on both bands at a ridiculous diameter around the perimeter of my property. While there have definitely been a few negative reviews, this router has been one of ASUS's flagship models for a little better than two years, and their continued development and support seem to indicate that both they and a large population of owners tend to know that well enough as well.

This router has been on the market for several years now, sold under the model names of RT-AC68U, RT-AC1900P, RT-AC68P, RT-AC68R, etc. The core components and stellar performance remain the same, minor branding differences notwithstanding. This is the fourth router of this model schema that I've purchased -- not that any of the previous models have failed -- but rather to provide an outstanding AIMesh network in my own home and provide a solutions in other locations. I suspect that this model has remained in production for so long because it has been one of ASUS' best and most reliable models. It is substantially different in hardware than its lesser model the RT-AC66 family. While I suspect, as with most consumer-grade wireless solutions, that the range diminishes somewhat over time, I've measured this model at functional speeds at over 100 yards from its install location on its 2.4GHz band, and half that for the 5GHz band. I've seen nothing to pique my interest in other offerings for the price range, including more expensive ASUS offerings. While its dominance will surely fade as new security standards roll out, ASUS has still supported this model with consistent firmware upgrades, typically providing an update at a minimum interval of once a month. They also provide a mobile app that is passable for my purposes of monitoring and controlling my home mesh-network, setting up and killing guest networks, changing DNS servers, and killing and allowing individual connections with ease. Obviously, highly recommended.

Bought this to replace the wifi on my combo Motorola surfboard cable modem. The wifi on that was Ok when only one or two devices but was very slow when someone was streaming or gaming. Was unsure about buying a new wifi router if it would really be any better. I looked for AC specifically, and QOS. And found it in this Asus router. This more than met my expectations. It has plenty of wifi capacity I don't even need the QOS. I have 3 devices streaming, plus tablet, pc, and 3 smart phones. No pauses or buffering. I tried the QOS just to test and it is super easy to set up. This router is amazing, easy to set up. You don't have to know anything about routers. It's that simple. Very easy to use and well designed interface. Lots of features. Parental control, scheduling, diagnostics, and monitoring. Plus lots more. Strong signal throughout house and out in driveway too. Plenty of bandwidth. I was very impressed with it. Price is good too. I was looking at Tp-link and linksys and ended up choosing the Asus, it wasn't that much more and is well worth the little extra. I'm glad I didn't go for the 3100 I really didn't need to go that high the 1900 is plenty. Great router. Never have to restart like some cheaper brands. It just works. It looks good too. I would most definitely recommend this router you will not be disappointed.

I was very skeptical about purchasing a $200 priced router. I have normally used netgear and linksys routers in the past that were in the 50-60$ price range. Those were good but always dropped connections or got slow over time. Long story short I was experiencing loss of speed with my Comcast home router. I am paying for their 75mbps *performance* and MOST times I only get 5-15mbps on speedtest. After months of terrible speeds and I know my cable speeds use to be fast I decided to bite the bullet. I didn't do much reading or research too much but this product helped solved any bottleneck in my home network. Using admin mode I turned the cable modem router into bridge mode and setup this ASUS router using wan port 1. Low and behold I was hitting close to 90mbps on my first speed test. The spotty connection I was getting is now MUCH better. Solid internet performance! To be able to use this product at its peak performance make sure you have devices capable of using 5ghz ac mode. The regular 2.4ghz mode is still fast but having the 5ghz mode helps tremendously. The built-in browser setup was also super easy and premium feeling kind of like DD-WRT interface but simplified. If you are on the verge of purchasing this product I would definitely recommend this. It is worth the headaches of dealing with slow spotty speeds.

I had an only DIR-655 that had started to drop connections every day and automatically reboot. With all my new devices and growing network, it simply couldn't handle the 802.11ac demands and speed. Plus it was single-band and didn't have great signal. I knew I had to upgrade. After spending days and countless hours reading router reviews on everything from hardcore tech sites to ecommerce sites, I kept coming across this router. It was one of the few routers that had consistently excellent reviews, and also had a longer warranty (unlike some that only give you any real support for 90 days and then expect you to pay more to get troubleshooting help). I read tons of reviews here on Best Buy about this router and on other sites, and decided this would meet all my needs and then some. Boy, am I happy I did! This router is awesome. I now get full signal throughout my entire home AND I get wifi speeds that are almost identical to my hardwired desktop connection. I've had zero reboots or dropped signals in the first week. Blazed speeds. The router looks cool (instead of the alien ship look that other routers have)...and it has tons of great security features, guest networks, etc. I am VERY happy with this purchase and highly recommend it. Oh, btw, this version of the router is exclusive to Amazon. It has a faster processor than the version you can find on the other big ecommerce giant. So if you're considering getting it, the latest & fastest version is only available with Best Buy. Again, EXCELLENT router. A huge step up from what I had before.

I usually don't do reviews, but since I have not one, but two of these ASUS routers, I decided to write my experience with using this router. ASUS is know for some very good products, but this particular router seems to have WiFi connection drop outs intermittently, which can occur multiple times a day or once a day. I have been through several firmware updates and none has corrected this issue with both of my routers. I have used them in AIMesh and now in single router with 5Ghz media bridge and the issue of drop outs still occur. The units were sent to ASUS only to be returned to the next day with a firmware updated to latest version and "no problem found" on both units. After receiving te units back, they dropped out in the first 20 minutes of use and then again 4-5 hours later. All this AFTER receiving them back from ASUS service. During the period of these units being out for service, a Linksys EA-8300 & RE-9000 unit were installed and that duo performed solidly in Max-Stream "mesh" mode with tri-band. At this point, I would not try any more ASUS networking units based off my experience with two of these units and after ASUS's poor attempt at repairs under warranty with nothing done at all or even attempts to replicate the issue. IMO, stay away from this router, as I cannot recommend it.

I have owned several Linksys and then Linksys/Cisco routers, switches and hubs plus Netgear, D-Link and some other off brands. I own and have owned several ASUS Motherboards and branded ASUS Branded video cards as well. So, I figured since my last CIsco/Linksys Wireless Router decided to start resetting back to factory, I'd try this ASUS one. 4 gigabit ethernet ports, and fast 2.4 and 5 ghz wifi, plus lots of parental controls, many ways to do customization, plus ability to attach a usb 3.0 external hard drive as well as a usb 2.0 thumb drive or the like, making it so that you can setup a UPNP Media server, plus ability to access your storage from over the internet and in the cloud with ASUS giving you your own DDNS Name, how could anyone not wanna give it a try. I read other reviews of some having issues and others not, but figured since I am a Computer Systems Administrator for over 25+ Years, it'd be worth it. I have no complaints with this router at all. Love it's configuration, and it has an Android app I can use to do monitoring and some configuration if I need to. I recommend this router, especially if you aren't computer savvy, as it's very simple to configure with it's step by step guide when you plug it in. You won't even need the manual.

I have used this router for almost a year at my parent's house. Upgraded from the free built in one from ISP. Internet is spotty there so I really like the multiple WAN connections with auto failover that works well. They had HughesNet and we also were able to do Internet connection sharing on a laptop with a tethered iPhone and use it for a WAN input. Didn't try the Android phone direct to modem but I would assume it works. Didn't re flash firmware but nice option to have. WiFi works great. Haven't had a the unit lock up and need rebooting. Runs cool. Also, as a VPN server or client I use it to connect to a Synology NAS at my house to file share and no need for VPN config on client PC's as it brokers the connection. I like the web UI a lot. Forget all the MESH WiFi networks, get a quality MiMo and do your best to centrally locate it. If it doesn't cover your whole house, your house is too big and you can afford to get 2 of them.

Bought this to replace an ancient WNDR4500 that Netgear no longer supports with firmware updates. That old router was still working fine but with no firmware updates available, security was becoming an issue. Did not have any issues installing or setting up the new ASUS router to include a guest network. My home is lath and plaster with a 20 foot brick fireplace in the middle providing some challenges for a wireless router. The coverage with the AC1900p is excellent and it is comforting to know that ASUS is still providing firmware updates for this model. The AC1900p has built in security from Trend Micro that provides a warning when you when try to access a potentially "bad" web site. This router, which is only available at Best Buy, has a slightly faster processor than ASUS’s other AC1900 routers. I have noticed improved transfer speeds over my wired network that may be due in part to the faster processor. If you need a new router and this is your price point, I highly recommend the ASUS 1900p.

I bought two of these Routers to replace my two ASUS RT-N12 D1 routers (which worked fine) because I wanted higher speeds and 5G Wi-Fi. All wireless devices are now faster! I use these in AP Mode. These work great! Coverage is excellent and so is the speed. What I like most about ASUS is that they are easy to set up, very configurable and reliable. The Wi-Fi App on iPhone works well also. **One thing you will want to do as soon as you get this: Update the firmware!! The latest as of this writing is 3.0.0.4.382.18881. In my experience, the prior 2 versions of firmware displayed quite a few errors in the System Logs. After uploading to the new version - NO MORE ERRORS! The errors didn't seem to effect performance but it kind of bothered me. If you activate the "Roaming assistant" in the Wireless - Professional tab (which works very well) you will see what may appear to be errors. They are not, they are just Roaming events from one AP to the other. Again, I have multiple units that can & will roam back and forth to each other. Great product and highly recommend it.

I never needed WiFi till a few years ago, when I got my Xbox One. Signal in my area for 4G LTE was almost non-existent, so I had a box from the carrier that used my cable for CDMA, which gave me full signal in my apartment! When I got the Xbox, I got another brand of WiFi to hook the Xbox to the internet, which was in another room. Also my new smartphone, a Samsung, had a program called "WiFi calling" which gave me 4G-LTE PLUS I could go onto the internet with the phone, AND talk at the same time! THEN my WiFi broke down, and I got another one! IT broke down also, JUST as the speed of internet went to 200meg! So I took it back under warranty and switched to the ASUS model! I'm stroking OVER 200meg with it, and although the unit has more controls than the other brand for settings, I am very pleased with the security it has built in. No, I'm NOT talking about protocols, I'm talking about LIVE Trend Micro antivirus and Malware detection IN THE UNIT! It stops me dead when I visit an infected site!

    Changed my home WiFi experience

I used a TP-Link Arcer C7 v2 in my 2,000 sqft townhome for 2 years and had so many problems with the 2.4G band. About 8 smart home devices (nest, Alexa, echo dot, smart plugs, PS4) were connected to 2.4G and it created a very unreliable experience. I tried changing channels, channel widths, upgrading firmware- nothing could fix the instability of that router. Upgraded to Asus RT-AC1900P and it made a huge difference. Typically 8 things are connected to 2.4G and there’s still plenty of bandwidth left (~60 mbps from 5”, ~25mbps from 20” through walls and a floor). Now that things work really well I’m going to drop crappy Spectrum cable and pay for YouTube TV since my LG TV connects to the 5G band (4K on YouTube app plays instantly). This is worth the money if you’re willing to be deliberate with your home entertainment setup and decisions. I cannot stress enough how much better it is than the Archer C7 v2 AC1750. I hope this was helpful.

If you want you need something that has really good wireless range and many of the consumer level advanced features with power for extra this one might be for you. I bough this for my mother's house and it covers both floors easily with a string 5Ghz signal and obviously the 2.4Ghz signal goes even further. I do wish that it supported the Smart Connect WiFi feature but that may not be what you are looking for anyway. This has fast wifi but not the absoute fastest standards. But most people don't need nearly as much wifi speed as they think. And this has a fast processor allowing for much faster internet speeds. So if you are not looking for the absolute top of the line (with the highest prices) nor to dive into the world of pfSense (PC Based) routers this is a very good choice. I personally wish with these dual core processors (and even quad core in other cases) would rewrite their NAT, Firewall, Proxy, and Traffic Shaping code to be correctly multi-threaded so one core isn't he bottle neck for internet speeds.

Router signal in my 2 story home had started to slow. I have a nearly 10 year old Lynksis WRT120N router- still working fine. After reading all the glowing reviews I thought this router would be a vast improvement in wifi signal range. Alas, after plugging it in and testing signal strength throughout my house with Android phone WiFiman app (free wifi analyzer) I found that the signal of my old router was slightly better on both the 2.4Hz and 5GHz range. This was really surprising. Maybe I received a bad router? Maybe I didn't mess with the settings enough? Maybe older routers were just build better? I don't know the answer, but I'm planning on returning this router unless someone has a suggestion of what may have gone wrong to prove its better.

I replaced an older Belkin router with this Asus router, even though there wasn't anything wrong with the Belkin. I had read a review on CNET and this was one of the top rated routers in the article. It was pretty easy to set up although connecting my wifi printer gave me problems but those were the printer, not the router and I found the solution to the problem. I have several clients (echo dot, two tablets, Macbook, HP printer, two cell phones, Chromebook, laptop, Phillips hue, and an Apple Time machine which is connected via cable) connected to the dual-band network(s) and each works well, whether it's 2.4G or 5G. The web interface for the router doesn't seem as streamlined as the interface for the Belkin which is why I gave it 4 stars, but that might just take getting used to. Overall it was a good purchase.
