• Yes, it is backlit, FN+F3,F4 will decrease-increase backlight brightness, or turn it on/off

• Yes.. the black letters with the White LIT keys, is the main reason I exchanged my 2-week old Silver ASUS laptop. Silver metal keys with white is barely readable. The 2 colors are too similar. Now, this laptop with the Black letters is great. Very easy to read and I prefer the feel of the keys. Just push the Fn key.. then f3 or f4 to get the keyboard to light up. A backlit keyboard is one of the BEST features on this laptop.

• Did you make sure that you turned up the brightness on the keyboard so that it is lit when you need it to be? try FN+F4 and see if that fixes your problem, though in my opinion its not the best backlit laptop out there.
